Later in the afternoon, having temporarily giving up in our search for ‘Lush’ and the Melt Banana, we decided to head over the Imperial Palace and gardens in the center of the city. After exiting the subway we first walked through Hibiya Park, which is just outside of the Palace walls. It was a very calm and well kept park, with the mood broken by speeches being heard over loudspeakers in an open air stadium in one corner of the park. We headed over to the stadium to see what was going on, and observed a protest of some kind. Banners were being held up, and music was playing. Most participants were wearing brightly colored vests. It seemed all very well organized, and peaceful. Continuing on our walk we reached the outer wall and moat ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, this weekend was a bit crazy and I wasn't in my room much except to sleep. We finally have a room with internet connection in it, so I will be updating more frequently from here on out. I'll pretty much be updating you on small things that happen during the week, but mostly the weekend. All I do during the week is teach, and hang out in the office before a nice dinner and bed. Not as thrilling as one would imagine for being in India. But, I'm here to train, not to be a roving reporter; so on to my update! After seeing how crazy the traffic was here, I had to question why I never saw an accident, then it hit me. Quite litterally actually. Well not ... read more

Varkala. Varkala. Varkala Say it. Var-ka-la. Say it again. Varkala. It is pronounced as it is spelled. Again. Varkala. This time, say it with a Keralan accent, as though you have a million of the tiniest pebbles in your mouth and in order to keep them from spilling as you speak, you must hold them all under your tongue. Varkala. Say this word, and you have said a word worthy of speech. Varkala. Feel it. Varkala. Feel it in your mouth. Varkala. Feel it biting at your lower lip. Varkala. Feel it cut across the back of your tongue. Varkala. Feel it scrape across the tip just before it rolls redeemingly off of your tongue. Varkala. Etch the word into your mouth. Etch it into your mind. This word represents a place of great beauty. Search ... read more

OK OK OK! Jeez! It's been over a week since our last entry and we are hearing about it from everyone! So alright already, here it you go. We finished off last time having partied the night away in Goa. Had we already gone back to Arambol for the weekend? Ok, well we did do that, having worn out the things to do in Panjim and bought a train ticket for the following Monday. Back in Aramol we got up to our usual, you know, laying on the beach, reading books, eating......yeah that about it. We also found a lovely little shop near the top of the road and upstairs, full of interestingly designed clothes, and not the usual street vendor tourist fare. We spent the afternoon chatting with the owner Sudeep, from Nepal, drank chai, ... read more

We discovered another asian sport. It is a foot game. The number of players is indifferent. This game consists in exchanging a sort of ball with feathers by feet. It is very funny and tiring when you don’t know how to play with it. So this is the new daily sport of our French team… only for a moment I think. Have a look on the South gate of the campus! And the Chinese policeman!  Haha picture! I’m a tourist! This Monday was the last day of the Chinese lantern celebration. Its duration is about one month. The Chinese lantern celebration is done since the Hanne dynasty (from -202 to 221) and it closes the New Year festivities. In the olden days, it was the occasion to drive back with lanterns the ancestors come to ... read more

Just as I thought my weeks would become routine, that the trips would become seldom and life would become a bit more ordinary I was shipped back to the east coast on Tuesday night, to tsunami hit Nagapattinum in Tamil Nadu. Another 10 hour bus journey, I received little sleep and had two very long, hot and hectic days. We had a meeting with Action Aid over a proposal we submitted, the outcome wasn’t too agreeable as they cut the budget by half, but I made a few good contacts on a more positive note. I travelled back to Bangalore on Thursday night, alone and by train for the first time, but was far more comfortable than coach, which was lucky as I was off again on my travels the following evening. Around 10pm on Friday ... read more

Ady and I took the night train from Vientiane (Laos) to Bangkok this morning, Ady with a dodgy tummy and me with that dose of food poisoning!!! We arrived in Bangkok at 8am and jumped in a taxi to The good old Grand President Hotel, we are becoming locals the doormen recognise us!! As we checked in we were told we had been upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite with a lounge which was very nice... We nipped to the email quickly to check the flight details for Mum and Dad, which hadn't arrived!! After a while we convinced ourselves that they must be flying Singapore airlines as the flight came in about the right time and Mum and Dad are off to Singapore after Thailand... all made sense to us!!! We made ourselves a ... read more
