Hello it's me Jamil . The name Mumbai and Bombay are the same place but the name changed. Don't ask why. The traffic here is insane. Come here and try crossing the road. If you're not experienced you will get hit and I'm serious. And about one block away there is a MCDONALDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! . Yeah. But there is a sign that says no beef is served in India. Now that is a problem. In India they do not kill cows because cows are holy. Yesterday we went to Chowpatty beach and people were selling peanuts and corn. There also was a guy who was massaging people and my mom said it really hurt and if she got one it would be really bad. Then I went on a motorcycle ride but it wasn't electric, the guy ... read more

Dedicated to Jaspreet Laly - RIP!! Day 2 didn't live up to its ideal expectations, as the morning became another waiting game. I had to see my supervising Registrar, who would be coordinating my elective experience at the hospital. After being sent to a few varied locations around the Ramachandra Campus, with copius time available to review my inner sanctum, i finally got to meet the tutor! Her name was Dr. Sujatha, and she seemed very friendly indeed. I was basically told of the prospective routine that i would follow, as part of the General Medicine team. This would involve outpatient visits, Ward rounds, Clinics, Journal clubs, and student teaching sessions. Some insight into Sri Ramachandra Hospital; This was India's first private teaching hospital set up by Shri N.P.V. Ramasamy in 1985. His objective was to ... read more

One of our goals for this trip has been to have a drink in the bar from Lost in Translation. This morning, while at the cyber café, we did a little research and found that it was in the Park Hyatt Hotel in Shinjuku. After getting back from Tokyo Tower, we changed into suits and had a glass of scotch before heading out. The Park Hyatt was about a kilometer from the subway, but unlike American hotels, there were no glowing signs outside to indicate which building it was. After a few strolls through the lobby of the building it was most likely in, we found a sign pointing to the entrance for the Hyatt and went up. By this time we were totally in character: the bar is quite fancy and we didn’t want to ... read more

the tokyo tower has two levels - the special and the normal observatory. the special costs a bit extra, but its at 250m while the normal is only at 150m. guided by advice from dan budny, we decided that we had to go for the special observatory. we got there right about dusk. the elevator made a cracking noise on the way up, but it was only a safety device. its hard to describe how the skyscrape of tokyo looks. tokyo is big; really big. you cant see beyond tokyo. d and i took a lot of pictures and we waited for night. the wave of red lights and fluorescent signs, while the sun flamed into the mountains. it got pretty crowded- apparently we weren't the only ones who thought about coming there at dusk. ... read more

Later in the afternoon, having temporarily giving up in our search for ‘Lush’ and the Melt Banana, we decided to head over the Imperial Palace and gardens in the center of the city. After exiting the subway we first walked through Hibiya Park, which is just outside of the Palace walls. It was a very calm and well kept park, with the mood broken by speeches being heard over loudspeakers in an open air stadium in one corner of the park. We headed over to the stadium to see what was going on, and observed a protest of some kind. Banners were being held up, and music was playing. Most participants were wearing brightly colored vests. It seemed all very well organized, and peaceful. Continuing on our walk we reached the outer wall and moat ... read more

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, this weekend was a bit crazy and I wasn't in my room much except to sleep. We finally have a room with internet connection in it, so I will be updating more frequently from here on out. I'll pretty much be updating you on small things that happen during the week, but mostly the weekend. All I do during the week is teach, and hang out in the office before a nice dinner and bed. Not as thrilling as one would imagine for being in India. But, I'm here to train, not to be a roving reporter; so on to my update! After seeing how crazy the traffic was here, I had to question why I never saw an accident, then it hit me. Quite litterally actually. Well not ... read more

Varkala. Varkala. Varkala Say it. Var-ka-la. Say it again. Varkala. It is pronounced as it is spelled. Again. Varkala. This time, say it with a Keralan accent, as though you have a million of the tiniest pebbles in your mouth and in order to keep them from spilling as you speak, you must hold them all under your tongue. Varkala. Say this word, and you have said a word worthy of speech. Varkala. Feel it. Varkala. Feel it in your mouth. Varkala. Feel it biting at your lower lip. Varkala. Feel it cut across the back of your tongue. Varkala. Feel it scrape across the tip just before it rolls redeemingly off of your tongue. Varkala. Etch the word into your mouth. Etch it into your mind. This word represents a place of great beauty. Search ... read more

OK OK OK! Jeez! It's been over a week since our last entry and we are hearing about it from everyone! So alright already, here it you go. We finished off last time having partied the night away in Goa. Had we already gone back to Arambol for the weekend? Ok, well we did do that, having worn out the things to do in Panjim and bought a train ticket for the following Monday. Back in Aramol we got up to our usual, you know, laying on the beach, reading books, eating......yeah that about it. We also found a lovely little shop near the top of the road and upstairs, full of interestingly designed clothes, and not the usual street vendor tourist fare. We spent the afternoon chatting with the owner Sudeep, from Nepal, drank chai, ... read more

We discovered another asian sport. It is a foot game. The number of players is indifferent. This game consists in exchanging a sort of ball with feathers by feet. It is very funny and tiring when you don’t know how to play with it. So this is the new daily sport of our French team… only for a moment I think. Have a look on the South gate of the campus! And the Chinese policeman!  Haha picture! I’m a tourist! This Monday was the last day of the Chinese lantern celebration. Its duration is about one month. The Chinese lantern celebration is done since the Hanne dynasty (from -202 to 221) and it closes the New Year festivities. In the olden days, it was the occasion to drive back with lanterns the ancestors come to ... read more
