Descending through smokey, brown fog into CM. It's a hustle bustle city with the smell of burning rice fields and the intense smoke of same! I got tomy little oasis guesthouse just on the other side of the river from the old town. Baan Orapin - highly recc. it to anyone who wants to splurge a little ($40). Clean little jungle of a place with traditional Thai architecture, teak floors, a beautiful net covering the queen-size bed, tv, private bath and sitting room. The first night I arrived I took off walking (it was still light) across a small concrete walking bridge over the Ping River. I felt like I was in a movie, of course - the high bridge (4 feet wide) - it is unfinished, thus NO railings....so when a bicycling monk approaches, you ... read more

We started touring Bangkok early morning with the group. The Itinerary was to see the Grand Palace, the Jade Buddha, the Reclining Buddha and have lunch at the floating market before heading to the train station. Grand Palace Ahh yes, the opulence of monarchies well spent. The grounds built upon the original China Town rivals Buckingham palace. The possessions of the royal family on display go on and on. Pictures do better than words. Beautiful Jade Buddha They must love their Buddha’s, cause this one is essentially priceless. It is made entirely of pure unadulterated jade stone it measure about 3-4 ft high.... so yeah, its one big rock. Running out of time and steam, to say the least, after touring the palace we decided to "make one" with commercialism and headed for the BMK (still ... read more

Day 2 In the morning, and itenneary change led us to an NGO founded by the woman directory of the film Salaam Bombay (film documents the life of a small homeless child in Mumbai). The NGO called Baalak Trust is set up to help homeless or runaway children at the first point of entry which is usually the railway stations. They have spotters throughout the station and a main office there to coordinate the work and provide immediate healthcare services. There is an urgency to identify these kids once they enter the station before others willing to exploit their vulnerable situation can get a hold of them. Once identified and if convinced by the staff to receive their aid they are brought into a shelter deep in the heart of the neighborhood in the vicinity of ... read more

6th March Got up at 6am to start what turned out to be a 13 hour journey to Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City. The first part of the journey dragged a bit especialy as we had no lunch. Once we changed buses and then crossed into Vietnam, the journey didn't feel as bad. A new country and its scenery to look at.. Checked into a guest house and went for food & beers with Joel (Canadian) and Kerry (American) who we met on the bus. 7th March - Early start, we went on a 1/2 day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, about 200km + of tunnels that the Viet Cong built to hide from / fight against the Americans. It was weird going under ground and seeing huge craters where B52's had dropped bombs ... read more

This morning is our last project visit before returning to Delhi. It is spent at a school in Bhubanaswar set up by a charitable organisation for slum children. Here WaterAid and partners have helped secure water supplies by investing in a roof rain water harvesting system. This collects rain water from the school roof during the rainy season, filters it and stores it in large containers, enough for a few months' supply. In future they hope to increase storage capacity but this would require more complex solutions to ensure the water could be kept clean for longer. Children here have been given a voice by setting up a 'child parliament', and we are priviledged to observe them in session. There is a government and an opposition, with ministers for water, sanitation, health, education and finance. Questions ... read more

Dinsdag 6 maart.

Saturday 3rd we left to go to Loas.... we arrive late on Monday 5th, travelling is such fun! Not much to say, took the slow boat down the river for a few days, met some Dutch guys and listened to my iPod (the best invention ever for these trips!) As I cannot be bothered to write much as I have been on the internet for over an hour! in summary Luang Prabang was cool, rode round on some bikes for the day, got a tul-tuk to the waterfall another day which broke down a total of 6 times on the way back and saw a few temples - you had to be there really! Good french bread and pizza if you are ever there though! ... read more
