First off: pictures are up on http://picasaweb.google.com/phil467/BangkokCambodiaVietnamReadingWeekTripFeb14Mar5 Or on my Facebook. It's been two days since I got back from my 18-day trip through Cambodia/Vietnam. Wrote my midterm today and now have the rest of the week off to catch up on readings, emails, work, and people. Which has also brought me to a lot of time for reflection... It was exciting! I love travelling, experiencing new things, seeing and trying to understand different cultures and lifestyles of people, etc... some highlights to mention: On being a tourist There's no question about it. Just cause of what you're wearing or the size of your pack or even the fact that you're coming out of a ferry dock/airport/bus station, you're gonna get haggled. Just about everywhere you go, someone's either trying to sell you souvenirs, postcards, drinks, ... read more

Moved to a guesthouse with aircon and ensuite. It is still on 2 minutes from the beach though. The only problem is you have to dodge several gangs of massage girls on either side of the street to get there. The great news is that the room has 3 sports channels and a movie channel. Oh yeah, went to beach again!... read more

... read more

So continuing with my facing fears theory this morning I got up and climbed a 1000ft hill/mountain.... the views over Pushkar were simply stunning, being able to see hundreds of miles in all directions was awesome. At the top of the mountain was a temple but instead of tranquillity there was a 22 year old guy (Rikesh) playing banging trance (that he was also selling) so it was a pretty surreal experience. At about 11am it was 30c up there so I decided to make my way down before it became too hot. I met up with Mohamed (Ezz) an Egyptian guy who now lives in Norway and sells handicraft from India, Nepal and Egypt and he took me to learn a bit about buying wholesale in India. We went to a stone shop where I ... read more

Well, the time had come to leave our piece of paradise but not before a little adventure just like entering Vietnam exiting was just as interesting. we got the ferry to a place called Rach gia and we were appalled at all the rubbish that was washed up at the dock its strange but i really feel asia in general does not realise the harm it is causing by all the pollution we found Vietnam to top the list on the rubbish everywhere front, you may be wondering how we liked Vietnam to be totally honest it was a mixed bag the good the bad and the down right ugly are all here, the woman i found to be really hard working but the are so obbseed with retaining their off white coloured skin to the ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur March 7th 2007

It's been tough to get adequate internet access in India to post a new blog entry, and I apologize to all our readers who are eager to hear about our new adventures. This entry is old, summing up our time in our first three stops, but it's all I have for now and I've been trying to upload it onto a public terminal for over a week now. The owners of the internet cafes don't allow USB memory keys to be plugged into their computers, so I had to be sneaky and James Bond like in getting this entry and pictures uploaded. Fitting, since we are in Udaipur at the moment, and the movie Octopussy was filmed here. It's not hard to forget either, seeing as every budget restaurant in the city plays the movie nightly. ... read more

Now we thought the trip to Hanoi was a nightmare but this was only preparing us for the shambles of the trip from Hanoi to Laos. We were collected at 7 pm one by one from our guest house and taken on the back of a motor bike to what we thought was the main collection point, but on arrival we were ushered into a cab with 4 other people and their bags already crammed in the back. Then we thought we would be on our way to the main bus station and couldn’t believe our eyes when we turned up at a strange old dark warehouse with loads of wild dogs around and a clapped out bus full of locals looking like they lived on the thing, the poor b@@tards. And no toilet so ... read more

From Hue, we ventured on to Hoi An, via a scenic mountain route over the Hai Van Pass. The trip was about four hours, there was a bit of fog about, but we managed to glimpse a lot of great mountain scenery in breaks in the fog. Stopped along the way at Marble Mountain to take a look at the incredible marble and jade statues the place is famous for. Lorenza almost had me convinced to purchase a huge Buddha for our garden, but my credit card was saved by the fact that we did not have a long enough stop for her to seal the deal (phew!). Clothes shopping Lucky we did not give the credit card a work out at the marble place, because Hoi An is a clothes shoppers mecca. he entire ... read more

After nearly two years in London and a fleeting one-week visit home to Adelaide for Andrew's brother Bernard and Amanda’s wedding we were up very early on Wednesday morning, bags packed and ready for three weeks in India. It felt a bit premature leaving Adelaide already after less than a week here but I knew we would be back in a month’s time. Long flights, plane food and watching movies on a tiny screen had begun to feel almost the norm after 26 hours from London to Adelaide and now from Adelaide to Sydney, Sydney to Darwin and finally on to Mumbai. Phew - the world is a big place! This arrival in India was to be very different from our backpacking past. Instead of fighting the hordes of taxi drivers at Delhi airport we arrived ... read more
