6th March Got up at 6am to start what turned out to be a 13 hour journey to Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City. The first part of the journey dragged a bit especialy as we had no lunch. Once we changed buses and then crossed into Vietnam, the journey didn't feel as bad. A new country and its scenery to look at.. Checked into a guest house and went for food & beers with Joel (Canadian) and Kerry (American) who we met on the bus. 7th March - Early start, we went on a 1/2 day trip to the Cu Chi tunnels, about 200km + of tunnels that the Viet Cong built to hide from / fight against the Americans. It was weird going under ground and seeing huge craters where B52's had dropped bombs ... read more

This morning is our last project visit before returning to Delhi. It is spent at a school in Bhubanaswar set up by a charitable organisation for slum children. Here WaterAid and partners have helped secure water supplies by investing in a roof rain water harvesting system. This collects rain water from the school roof during the rainy season, filters it and stores it in large containers, enough for a few months' supply. In future they hope to increase storage capacity but this would require more complex solutions to ensure the water could be kept clean for longer. Children here have been given a voice by setting up a 'child parliament', and we are priviledged to observe them in session. There is a government and an opposition, with ministers for water, sanitation, health, education and finance. Questions ... read more

Dinsdag 6 maart.

Saturday 3rd we left to go to Loas.... we arrive late on Monday 5th, travelling is such fun! Not much to say, took the slow boat down the river for a few days, met some Dutch guys and listened to my iPod (the best invention ever for these trips!) As I cannot be bothered to write much as I have been on the internet for over an hour! in summary Luang Prabang was cool, rode round on some bikes for the day, got a tul-tuk to the waterfall another day which broke down a total of 6 times on the way back and saw a few temples - you had to be there really! Good french bread and pizza if you are ever there though! ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane March 6th 2007

We arrived here at 5am, fresh from a night's bus journey! The plan was to go and watch the sunrise over the Mekong until the guest houses opened, but after half an hour under seige by the local mosquitos and still no sign of the sun we'd had enough and checked into the nearest hotel (which just happened to be a nice one with a pool). Vientiane is the capital city of Laos PDR but is still quite laid back with no visible rush hour (or traffic really). It has it's own Arc de Triomphe, some interesting Temples and the very first Lao skyscraper (about 10 floors) overlooking the parched river. We came, saw and moved on pretty quickly. Our bus out was overbooked so the driver quickly acquired some plastic garden chairs for the people ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya March 6th 2007

The tuk tuk is connected to the bus station, the bus station is connected to Phitsanulok, Phitsanulok is connected to a seven hour, 3rd class, non air conditioned train ride to Ayutthaya. To sum up that experience: after three hours I was ready to kill someone--but the eating was good. Despite the agonizing heat it was hard not to marvel at the incredible selection of food! Dozens of vendors carrying trays of fried chicken with basil, beef, tangy pork chunks on skewers, coconut balls filled with gelatin, mango and sticky rice, coconut pita bread, dollops of melting ice cream in styrofoam cups, bags of ice filled with coffee, pink milk, and coca cola, and endless amounts of other sweets. But, unfortunately the human stomach can only hold so much. We arrived in Ayutthaya, irritable and ... read more

Asia » Laos » North » Muang Ngoi Neua March 6th 2007

Arriving in Muang Ngoi by river boat was a pretty exciting prospect. Lonely planet describes it in a way that sounds like an idealistic travellers get away and I wasn’t disappointed. I travelled with some friends I’d met trekking in Luang Nam Tha and we met others in Nong Khiaw, just down river from our destination, where we stayed over for the night. Getting here from Nam Tha took an entire day traversing dusty bumpy dirt tracks by bus and an uncomfortable sâwngthâew journey, but at least it was mostly sealed roads. This sleepy market town on the banks of the Nam Ou cuts through close mountains and the scenery sours up on all sides displaying some dramatic lighting as the sun goes round combined with an eerie feeling as blankets of morning mist roll through ... read more
