Spent my first day of dive training trying to not sleep whilst watching training DVDs and answering a booklet. Actually failed this task and went to sleep for 10mins in the training room. Went to the doctors to get GP permission to dive. Had listed a half dozen possible physical and mental problems I had to confess but mostly none of them are ailing me recently. The nurses hooked me up by the ankles and wrists in a very worrying kinda device, giggling at my glorious hairy torso, but it was only to measure my heart beat at rest. The doctor commented it was quite low and asked if I exercise a lot. And that, that is one of the many examples relating to why the medical industry is flawed. It's their best guess at best. ... read more

Our first night train experience in Vietnam was not a good one. After a full day of seeing dead communist leaders, going round slightly confusing and strange museums, getting bananas confiscated by the dead communist leader (or his security guards at least), we boarded the train for Sapa. We had booked the hard sleeper for the journey north as it was the only choice available, but we consoled ourselves with the fact that we would be getting the soft sleeper on our return journey. The hard sleeper was very hard. And cramped. And full of snoring, farting Asians. It was a great relief to finally get into Sapa, and to find a representative from Pinocchio Hotel holding a sign with Suzanne's name on at the station. The morning was rather foggy and cold, but the tiny ... read more

I felt a little reluctant to be leaving Hoi An, but it was time to move on to our next destination. Our second (and final) night train journey of the trip was a fair bit shorter than the first at ten hours, but the train itself was a little grim. Worn, dark wood paneling lined our soft sleeper cabin, while the bed sheets, one of which had blood stains on it, looked like they hadn't been washed in a good while. Still, it was much more comfortable than the hard sleeper we'd taken to Danang, and yes, it had a proper toilet!! Our two days were spent lazing on the beach and eating anything from hamburgers to cashew chicken, served in half a scooped out pineapple. We did pretty much nothing else, and it was bloody ... read more

Das ... read more

6 to 12 March 2013 – I was back to Nha Trang beach city on the third visit. I didn’t feel well when I took a bus from Phan Thiết to Nha Trang (250km). I got sore throat, headache and feeling dizzy after running around to many places during the past 10 days. Fortunately, I found a cheap and clean guesthouse which is located in the center of the city, only a few minutes walking to the beach. I decided to stay in Nha Trang for a week or 10 days. I wanted to relax and discover the city by motorbike. I got a 50cc Honda motorbike from my cousin living in Nha Trang and I could use it as long as I stayed in the city. Nha Trang is a famous beach city in the ... read more

Hi All, Sorry for this very delayed blog post. You'll also notice that I'm not really writing about where we are either. We're still not up to writing the post for Nha Trang yet... oops. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, China was a bit of a nightmare with regards to decent internet onnections to the outside world. We found Facebook wouldn't work and Skype was very sluggish. We decided not to worry so much about getting the blog written and wait until we found a decent connection. Secondly, we just got very, very busy! Without our long train trips through the countryside we found we ran out of time each day and just let everything lapse. Lastly, We're just having too much fun!!!! Don't worry, we're still thinking of all of you but there ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199After a long day (138km) I finally arrive in Nha Trang, it's just starting to get dark and the traffic is really busy so I slow my speed down and take my time navigating to the hotel I plan on staying in. The first sights are magical, there's a real festive feel here still with lights everywhere, the bridge coming in is blue's and red's and way in the distance I spot what looks like half a dozen Eifel Towers? I head through the Happy New Year signs and manage to find my hotel before darkness sets in so I'm quite relieved, I give the bike a quick wash down and dry off before putting it away for a few days. So I manage to meet up with Michelle which is the reason I ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199DAY SEVEN (1/10/13) — Nha TrangIf you're lucky enough to be at the beach, you're lucky enough. This morning we see our hotel in daylight for the first time. The property is exquisite and the views along the beach, with thatched umbrellas and mountains on the distant shores, are spectacular. We have breakfast on the porch; among our selections are 20+ types of tropical fruits. This is paradise."It's the little things we do together" is a song from the Broadway musical “Company”. It seems like an appropriate theme for our day with Tauck. No big famous monuments … just little slices of Vietnamese life. We pass orchards and palm trees as we wander through rural landscapes. Our first stop is Khai Sang School, a kindergarden full of precious 4 and 5-year-olds. They sing and dance ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199It was a wild day leaving Hoi An but I've stayed here way too long already, I must admit it's a thought getting back on the bike but I'll make my next main stop at Nha Trang and maybe catch up with Michelle again. No sooner said than I got a message from Michelle saying she's had an accident on the motorbike and is now in Nha Trang so I'm going to try and get there as quickly as possible and it's a tough few days down the road. Tam Ky, Quang Ngai, Quin Non, Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang… most days over 100 km and the weather really hasn't been great either! The road round the coast though is brilliant and I do enjoy my days even if it is tough going, it ... read more
