The bottle-nosed Russian on my right started pulling on my arm, seeking my undivided attention. We're sitting in a Vietnamese sports bar on a Sunday night watching the Olympic 4-man bobsled finals because there isn't anything else to do in Nha Trang at night, especially for a dry drunk like myself. The girls are cooling their mitts with bottles of Tiger beer. So we're watching the winter Olympics from a balmy tropical shore and the fully-occupied bar stools are groaning with Russian bottoms and this guy sitting at my right starts pulling on my arm so that he can give me, in slurred Russian, what his observations are with regard to the technical merits of the run we have just watched. Russians are very touchy, feely people. They have no concept of body space. This goes ... read more

After we had once again had another sleepless night on a sleeper bus from Hoi An. we arrived in Nha Trang at a rather small bus station a little bit further on from the main touristy area.......not that we knew this at the time because we thought we were at a different station and so opted not to take a taxi to our next hostel, and so soon we found ourselves on a rather long walk to the part of Nha Trang which we needed to get to, and as it was still very early in the morning the streets were deserted so for a change we didn’t actually have taxi drivers shouting at us everywhere we looked. Just our luck....but we made it there eventually to our home for the next few days called True ... read more

I'll admit it. At home I'm considered short. Though I keep telling people that if you average out heights around the world I am definitely average, I still have to navigate a world built for giants. Every chair I encounter calls for a decision: perch on the edge so my feet touch the ground or lean back all the way to have back support and let my feet dangle. In our last house I needed a foot stool just so I could cook in my own kitchen. So imagine my pleasure, no my euphoria, at discovering that the Vietnamese plan their cities and homes around people who are a reasonable height. Chairs in restaurants and cafes are downright comfortable and stairs easier to climb, hand rails are at the appropriate height. I feel as if I've ... read more

Well I made it to Nha Trang. And that feels like an achievement, because God I was tempted to go home straight from Ho Chi Minh City. My stomach pains were awful to the point of debilitating. My fatigue was hard to bear. I feel like, fingers crossed, I've turned a corner with this stuff tonight. I hope to God that I am in fact recovering or recovered and from now on I think I'll thank God every morning for my health. Truly, good health is a blessing and not something to be taken for granted - I know that now. All I had time for in Nha Trang was a dinner at the Novotel (still leery of anything resembling streetside food since my illness) and a bit of a walk around the main strip and ... read more

When I was reading about Nha Trang before, I wasn’t exactly sure whether to include it in my itinerary or not as it simply looked like a party place. With a nice beach that is… Some people were even comparing it to Koh Phangan and the full moon party, with this difference that these kind of parties were taking place here on a daily basis apparently. Since Koh Phangan turned out to be nothing close to a party place – we really enjoyed our stay there and thought of it as a very relaxing and beautiful place actually (maybe because we escaped it just before the full moon? Naaaah… We just stayed away from all the craziness… ;)), we decided to give Nha Trang a try as well. If only to break down the journey south ... read more

Nha Trang if you didn't know is known for its beaches. So we decided to have a beach day. But before this, Poppy, Rose, Melia and I took a trip out to some mud baths. A day spent relaxing in a bath full of mud, followed by a mineral bath then some relaxing swimming in their pools. A very chilled day as we got dropped off at the beach. The evening consisted of getting really drunk, playing pool, dancing and kissing a married Russian girl (the husband was there, bit weird). Poppy and I left the next morning for Delat - I had a horrible hangover. Our first day in Delat was spent eating lots of food and figuring out what to do on our second day.... read more

The rain greeted us in Nha Trang. We jumped into a taxi to take us to the guesthouse that Poppy was staying at. As it was only about 7am and couldn't check in, we sat in the computer room and had a bit of a snooze. Poppy came down a couple of hours later and we moved into a 3 bed dorm. I bumped into Lawrence (who I had met in Ko Phi Phi, Thailand) before going out wandering the streets of Nha Trang along with Christina and a couple of other girls we met. We went to Long Thanh photography gallery, a photographer known for his images of Vietnam. After a spot of street food for lunch (some weird white soft textured gel in cups served with sweet chilli sauce) we made our way back ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199I have been looking forward to visiting Vietnam again since we had such a great time here a few years ago. Nha Trang is a resort city on the southern coast. They have no large berths for the type of ship we are on so we have to take a tender to get to and from land. I prepared with my Dramamine, but it wasn't necessary. The ride wasn't too bad and took only ten minutes once we got going. Another shore excursion from the ship kept us busy most of the day, but it wasn't considered a full-day tour--about five hours though. We returned after 2 p.m. and were pretty hungry by then. But first, the tour. We first went to a silk embroidery workshop. The women were working on beautiful pieces that would ... read more

The most blog-worthy thing about Nha Trang was the journey there! That's a bit unfair really, but Russ had a bit of a stomach bug which restricted our explorations somewhat, and it wasn't what you might call beach weather either. Our bus from Hoi An took just under 12 hours. It was an overnight sleeper so we were a little dismayed to find the bus wasn't in as good a condition as others we have seen. None of the seatbelts worked for a start. Throughout the night the journey often felt like a white knuckle ride at a theme park ad our driver, clearly in a hurry, took bends at speeds which must have exceeded not only speed limits but common sense! Add to that the fact that the bus was fully booked yet our driver ... read more
