Nha Trang was nice, not alot of character to it but te weather and beach means that you can deal with it! Pretty much like a baking hot Blackpool or somewhere else in the UK. Hot enough to give us all sunburn. My lesson that I learnt : get someone else to lotion your back. I did my own and missed out huge bits meaning I had a ridiculous looking burn. Not alot to do apart from beach, there was a cable car to a five star resort on the island but given that we're on a budget. ... read more

After waving good bye to Denang, we were collected from the hotel and taken to Denang Airport for our flight to Nha Trang. Check in and security was probably the smoothest I’ve ever had and as quick as a flash, we were sitting in the small departure lounch. Once our flight was called, we boarded a small bus and were on our way to our aircraft, complete with propellers.. Right, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Upon takeoff, it become obvious that if you wanted a view, you would get one the entire flight as we didn’t seem to make it above the clouds once. From the old gentleman who got out of his seat when the plane started its descent, to the Asian guy in front of us who was on his phone ... read more

Nha Trang (-noun Travellers Dictionary – to relax, bask in hot sun by pool and enjoy good food and cheap alcohol) The past three days in Nha Trang have been the most relaxing out of all of Vietnam; presently, I am enjoying a glass of Johnnie Walker, sitting out on our balcony overlooking the hotel pool, beach and an as far as the eye can see stretch of the South China Sea with various islands and fishing trawlers dotted about along the horizon. Michelle is four levels below me getting her nails done at the hotel Spa. Back in March when Michelle and I first started planning our second tour of Vietnam, Nha Trang was singled out as our relaxing stop, splashing a little extra (though still remarkably cheap by western standards) for a nice hotel ... read more

Thursday 12th May So as you guessed it I've lost pace on the blogging front so here it goes.... Rudely awaken by the bus driver at 6.30am and spot a sign for Hoi An 260km...obviously no way we would be there by 8am. We arrived into Hue apparently having just missed the connecting bus to Hoi An and the next bus wasn't for another 4 hours. Clearly it was planned as there were motorbikes and cyclos hanging around asking us to go on half day tours. Initially we declined as we were highly annoyed but as the day went on we started to melt and finally succumbed to being cycled round the town by a couple of men, one of which has a review in the lonely planet. "Ha!! Trust me fella that doesn't entice me!" ... read more

Well, now into the fourth day in Vietnam and so much has happened. The dominant impression: it's the land of motorbikes. Got off the plane Saturday afternoon (May 7th) in Ho Chi Min City (or Saigon, as it's still known by locals) and taking the taxi to downtown, I was just overwhelmed by the number of motorbikes--I estimated between 10 and 20 motorbikes to every car/van/truck on the street. I later learned that there are 4.5 million motorbikes in HCMC and 600 thousand other vehicles (in a city of 9 million). I met the group an hour later for the pre-trip briefing. Turns out that there are only 5 of us (plus Pedro, our Tucan tour leader) on the trip, the other four all in their 20s. (Pedro is probably in his 30s.) We joke about ... read more

Up at 8:30am with only 2 hours sleep. We had a party boat excursion today so I figured I could rest! Emmo cracked a beer at 10am so everyone else followed suit and joined in! Our first stop was snorkeling which I really enjoyed! Then I floated around in an inner tube. People were jumping off the boat and having tons of fun while we were docked. We then had a huge feast for lunch! The music on our boat was great – we played I’m on a Boat and all tried to sing it. Another tourist boat then parked up beside ours and some random boy band played for both boats. Next was the best part- there was a dude in a floating tube serving alcohol so everyone jumped off the boat and swam to ... read more

Up early for our flight to Nha Trang! I had no idea what to expect but on the flight, I had a window seat and as we were landing all I could see was gorgeous white sand and blue water everywhere as we circled into the airport. Now this looked more like what I was waiting for! So excited to finally see the ocean for the first time! I was perma-smile! The drive along the coast from the airport to the hotel was so nice! Got to the hotel and jumped right in the pool with a bunch of others. Had a beer and chilled out a bit then walked to the ocean and along the Esplanade with some others. I bought a new sundress for $6 at the market. Went to a fancy place on ... read more

....whether it be the woman selling fruit, the man selling sunglasses or the endless bars and restaurants. Only the bars offer free mojitos with every drink though and they were much appreciated! So Nha Trang....our first beach destination on our journey up the coast of Vietnam. We had heard and seen that it was rather built up but with a 6km long beach we figured we'd surely be able to find a spot to sit. Arriving at 6am after an interesting and snazzy overnight bus journey we were pleased to see the beach abound with locals going for their morning swim and by mid morning the beach was rather deserted - the lack of constant "manicure lady? bracelet lady?" was greatly appreciated! Still dying of heat we decided to head to the Ice Bar where the ... read more

If I made anyone feel jealous by my casual namedropping of the South China Sea and my intention to go snorkelling today then you'll like this entry. It's for you. The trip was run by the Amazing Snorkeling (sic) Company. Or the Amazingly Grumpy Snorkeling Company. A bus picked me up from the hotel at 8.30am, we went to the harbour and about 18 of us got on a boat to visit a few islands, snorkel, have lunch and a 'fruit party' (?!) before coming back about 3/4pm. Our boat had an open sundeck wioth 5 wooden sunloungers on and a shaded downstairs with wooden slatted seats. Now I have noticed this a bit since I've been away - but today really took the prize for rude, grumpy, miserable, uncommunicative people. We spent a whole day ... read more

Yes. See what they mean about Nha Trang. It is a LOT busier than I was hoping. Sort of Brighton-ish, but I am determined t0 make the best of it. My hotel is lovely and I have a massive room. Another aching rock hard bed though. When I wake up in the morning it takes me a few minutes to get my body moving again...I don't expect sympathy however. So flew here yesterday, plane delayed, then pick up guy got puncture - all very entertaining. It's quite built up and fairly noisy, but much less than Saigom. I had dinner and a foot massage and then went to bed. The food here by te way is great. Fresh ingredients, lovely spices - just fab. Today I decided I would hit the beach. Got there at about ... read more
