The journey to Nha Trang, a city on Vietnam’s coastline, would be long, we were told, and so we had to set off in the tour van at 6AM. No one told us quite how long the trip would take, and so we were surprised to (eventually) discover that we would be in the van for eleven hours. What a trip! Not all of the travel time was due to the miles between Dong Nai and Nha Trang. In fact, I am not quite sure the actual distance that separates the two, and neither, it seems, is Google Maps. That is because we took the scenic route, a beautiful drive across miles and miles of countryside, on a relatively new road. We made several stops for food and restrooms and had to slow down several times ... read more

Wake up. Breakfast. Depart for Airport. 30 minute taxi. hour flight north on Vietnam Airlines. Land. Grab a cab. Ending up at Hoa's Place near the beach. It must have been here since the war in 1973. Everything is crumbling or falling in around it. It's the only old structure still standing as far as the eye can see. And the eyes can see at least 5-kilometers up and down China Beach. Hoa is a super friendly gentleman, running a family owned and operated establishment. Really we cannot complain, after all. The price for the night is less than dinner $12 USD. What bothers me most about 'Nam... the American dollar being charged everywhere. And if you want to pay in Dong, 'Nam's currency, they (Vietnamese) up the price. Dumping our bags, we packed a beach ... read more

Our journey began at 8:30 am starting with breakfast at the resort while Duc + Lam packed our gear onto the motorcycles. Today's adventure ride ran 237 kilometers from Dak Lak to Nha Trang north then east along several roadways through Central Highlands finishing along the South China Sea. It was an amazing second day that lasted more than 8.5-hours. Incredibly long. It was an arduous ride for all our butts. But it was an epic journey. We arrived in Nha Trang just before 5:30 pm. the shift key doesnt work, so thats why this blog will be missing shift necessary elements. bia hoi. the cheapest beer this side of the mississippi. actually in the world. less than 50 cents for a liter of home brewed beer. it was nha trang that introduced me to this novelty. an old run down german drunkard named bobby. what a guy. nha trang is the first beach city on my list. its a party town with tourists zipping in everyone direction. in all honesty, its not my favorite place because it does not offer much relaxation besides laying on the beach which i have trouble doing. instead i did what i always do....roam the city to see what i can see. lots of street vendors selling pate and pork sandwiches. delish. at 6 dollars a ... read more

On our first night in Ho Chi Minh City, our whole group went out for a meal to say bye to the five people who are heading home (they were only with us for the Cambodia part of the tour). Getting to the restaurant was a total mission because crossing the road in Vietnam, particularly this city is notoriously difficult. They don’t really have rules, or crossings. The technique is supposed to be that you walk slowly, looking both ways, never stop, never slow down, never speed up and the motorbike drivers just sort of dodge you. This is a city of 7million motorbikes by the way so yes, crossing the road is not fun! We all went to the Cu Chi Tunnels on Monday morning to learn about the Vietnam war. Basically, communists in North ... read more

Our group split up at this point as half of us wanted to go to Dalat and do some of the adventure activities whereas myself, Lisa and Katie fancied heading to Nha Trang to have some beach time and nightlife as we are doing more adventure activities in South America! The coach journey was a bit of a nightmare as the bus was mainly full of very noisy Vietnamese people who persisted on talking really louydly on their phones throughout the hourney which meant we were unable to nap! Bad times! However, i was really excited when i arrived in Nha Trang as it looked buzzing and was a lot bigger than i expected! We booked into Backpackers hostel which is definatly THE place to stay when travelling there! It was full of people, we got ... read more

You know how we thought our room was so great?? Tristans new quote " We are not staying in another guesthouse unless the bed sheet fits the bed." For 5 nights now we have struggled with sharing the top sheet as they've put a double sheet on a queen size bed. Turning it the other way doesn't help because Tristans feet stick out. So it was a toss and turny night with a creaky bed. Tris woke up and went out to get the bikes ready to go. He went to the shop to get a mirror put on his bike. Again he was treated like a King and offered drinks (which he thinks was originally the man's), and a seat. The guy asked for Tris to write down his name and Vietnamese phone #. He ... read more

Hi all, Where are my pics? I hear you cry... sorry folk but it seems internet and Asia and me just aren't really working out. It's not me it's them sort of thing. Laos internet was slow to the point of me getting angry. Vietnamese internet is fine but the few computers I've tried to upload pics on haven't worked so far. I will keep trying and endeavour to show you some of the 380 pics I have taken!! SO: End of Laos was spent in the 4000 Islands relaxing at the bottom of the Mekong in Laos, next to the Cambodian border. I was expecting a bit more from this - maybe accommodation which was more than a shed with a mozzie net, or some more decent food, or something. In retrospect I would have ... read more

May 24th-30th First, thanks to everyone that responded with their opinions on what I should do, I will be doing more of that throughout the trip. I think the final vote was “Go with the girl” 16 votes, “Go with the tour” 0 votes. Those that know me might think I followed the girl, but the tour continues on...... without me. Of course I picked the hot British bird and regretted it right away. Just kidding about the regret but we will get into that later. I spent my last days with the tour in a small city called Hoi An. This was my favorite place so far in Vietnam. Its a real small town that is known cause they have thousands of tailors that can make any type of clothing for cheap but since i ... read more

Vietnam on the Real Cheap! Hi everyone, we are off again on another trip around Asia. This time the exchange rate is in our favour – in Vietnam we are getting 22,000 dong to the AUD. When we first started coming to Vietnam in 2003 we were getting 11,000 dong to the AUD! Everything is now so incredibly cheap now . A special hello to Tebby and Brian in Mexico, and Robyn and Gene who should be in Thailand by now. Sorry we have been so remote in the last couple of months but we have run into very serious trouble with what is left of our investments – we now have a rogue fund manager who is shredding us and the regulators will do nothing about it, and after 2 years in the Federal Court ... read more
