We flew to Vietnam on Saturday 17th into HCMC. I was so thankful that we had organised a tour with an agent, as we have been picked up from the moment we set foot off the plane - did not have to organise a thing - not the visa, not the hotel transfer - nothing. We have our own private driver and tour guide for 3 weeks so we feel like royalty! But seriously, the cultural difference makes it necessary, as English is not widely spoken, and where it is, it is still fairly patchy ref understanding. Also, part of the culture is that you need to be 'introduced' (for business purposes usually or doors remain firmly closed), so we get the impression that having a tour operator 'introduce' you makes things flow more smoothly. Have ... read more

So we arrived in Na Trang the overnight bus just left us in this random car park on the beach front and typically there were more touts then there were passengers trying to get us to stay in their hotel! Thankfully we had our hotel booked and figured from our map that it wasn’t too far to walk. We were staying in the Thang Long Nah Trang Hotel, which was only newly built I think we were the 1st people to stay in our room. The room was really nice and big with two huge double beds, G won rock, paper, scissors so Debbie and I ended up sharing! Na Trang is a really nice place it’s like a big town that has the balance just right between Asian and Western, it caters to tourists but ... read more

Hi Everyone. Since the last blog we have certainly been on the move down the coast of Vietnam. We ended up spending four nights in the city of Hue. I really enjoyed our time here as it was a historical place. We spent most of one of the days exploring the old imperial city, which was surrounded by ancient walls and a moat. Inside the city was the imperial enclosure called the Purple Forbidden City, where the King used to live. It was lovely walking around the grounds and crossing over some of the bridges. Later that day we also took a boat trip up to a Pagoda on top of one the hills along the river. The following day we went on a day trip to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Some of the places on ... read more

Well after another over- nighter we touched down in Nha Trang where we delectable baguettes & mouth watering water melon on the beach for breakfast, despite being on the coast the heat is still intense. So in an act of escapism we jumped on a boat and went snorkelling and diving. Yippee! Once we were done with our marine frolicks we hired tandems and went to visit a Budha and a gentle cyle around town. That is one thing you don't do here, infact the 25 years I added to my life span by jumping into Lake Baikal I have actually gone into a defecit with having to negotiate Vietnam traffic.... read more

Der Schlafbus ohne Schlaf Mit dem Nachtbus geht es am 8. August gegen 20.30 Uhr los in Richtung Küste.

For our last full day in this coastal area of Vietnam, we traveled outside Nha Trang to another beach and “resort.” Now, “resort” in this country has a much different meaning than what we are used to. In fact, I would call the “resort” that we went to today just a beach. Perhaps more of a Florida or California beach than something in the Pacific Northwest, but a beach nonetheless. Visitors pay for large beach umbrellas (something I first discovered in Florida), there are vendors selling fresh seafood (which you can choose and buy and then they will prepare it for you), there are placed to buy overpriced drinks, and there’s a restaurant nearby. Beach, right? Thu was sick the night before, most likely from heat stroke, and all of us had tender shoulders and faces, ... read more

Today we woke up to yet another nice day although there were a few clouds on the horizon with a possible chance of rain. We decided today was the day we would treat ourselves and head to the mud baths of Nha Trang. We firstly headed out for breakfast which wasnt anything exciting and we havent found anywhere that looks good for breakfast. We ate at some little place then we walked to go get a cab and walked past a place that looks great for breakfast....we will head there tomorow, its very hard just to get bacon and eggs on toast without something weird coming out on the plate like cucumber or soy sauce or just something in general. So we got a cab through the back streets of Nha Trang which were really grose ... read more

Our first full day in Nha Trang! Or should I say our first full day near Nha Trang? We spent part of the day on Eco Green Island, a place that has been overtaken by a resort and tourists, and part of the day we spent in the city itself. The day started out with a slight miscommunication – half of us thought breakfast was at 8AM, the other half thought that we were leaving at 8AM. Regardless, things worked out. Breakfast at the hotel is a lovely blend of many different foods – just about everything one might eat for breakfast in Vietnam (soups, noodles, fried rice, fruit), plus eggs to order, rolls, ca phe and juice in a buffet style, which is perfect when people have varying tastes. It also works well for me ... read more

We left Mui Ne and travelled by a sleeper bus which was 3 rows of reclined seats with two layers in each row, no air conditioning and about 42 people on board. This was the bus ride from hell, the bus was that bad Kimberly nearly got off before it had even moved. After I talked Kimberly into it we set off on the 6 hour trek to Nha Trang. We arrived in Nha Trang around 8pm where we travelled to our hotel which was called the HQ Apartments and ownded by a very helpful australian guy who gave us advice on where to eat and bars to visit. It was really nice to not hvae to repeat yourself two or three times when we spoke. We went to an Italian place for dinner called De ... read more
