Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don May 21st 2011

The journey from Siem Reap to Phi Phi was massive. We left early morning and arrived at the Thai border at peak time for the sun, which made the hour border crossing in the beating sun absolutely terrible. 35 degrees, whilst we had to our luggage about and fill out paper work. Horrible. We reached Bangkok at 6.30pm, which meant he was also got to experience rush hour during monsoon rain, not fun. Moved very little for an hour and a half. The train we were hoping to catch was at 7.30pm and we arrived there at 7pm, needless to say it was full, so we got a bus down that night, at the same time. We paid over the odds, the guy got definitely tell we were in a rush and did not want to ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Siem Reap May 21st 2011

We were greeted when we got of the bus by a man waving a placard with our names on it - we had sort of arranged this but decided to find our own hotel rather than go with him, and we found a very good one for around $4 a night. A proper hotel. We arranged for tuk tuks to pick us up in the morning and take us on a tour of the Angor temples. It was stupidly hot and the grounds are massive, but the temples are incredible. Angkor Thom is more impressive than Angkor Wat to me - and between the two we found some monkeys! We fed them and ran from them when they thought we were getting a bit too close. We were confident they liked us but not too confident! ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh May 21st 2011

We got the bus over the border on the 7th May, with no real problems. Found a hotel for $5 each! Value for money, the rooms are nice but the area around are pretty shocking. On the day we arrived we went to the National Museum which was right by our hotel. So boring, nothing in it really worth of mention, ironic given that there were no information besides the artifacts. There was a man outside begging, who had no legs. I guess he was a veteran from the war, which was a bit shocking. We'd seen similar in Ho Chi Minh though, outside the War Museum (with no arms) and outside our hotel on the morning we left. It's horrible but you can't really give them anything. Alot of child beggars also, which is sad. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City May 21st 2011

We left Dalat at night and got the sleeper bus to Saigon, arriving at 6amish. Very early but the whole place is alive already. Found a nice hotel to stay in, had a nap and then went and had a Subway. Even that tastes different out here, went to the Reunification Palace which was good but nothing special, then had a good night out around our area. Found a reasonably quiet bar which let us and other people put songs on from youtube which was cool. Next day we did the war remnants museum, strange ; lots of helicopters, tanks etc but not much inside. Mainly pictures of people attacked by napalm as well as the preserved foetuses which were damaged by napalm. Very strange. Also on the first day we mixed with the locals for ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands » Lam Dong » Da Lat May 21st 2011

Got the bus to Dalat early morning, and stayed for two nights. Pretty place, not very lively. Will be mostly remembered for the cheeseburgers the lads ordered, which actually didn't have any meat in. Got bikes on the second day, and went around Dalat and a bit further out to a waterfall, which was a bit dissapointing but the ride was fun. Didn't get my own, definitely would have crashed, so I was on the backs of others which was good. Got some good photos! ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Khanh Hoa » Nha Trang May 21st 2011

Nha Trang was nice, not alot of character to it but te weather and beach means that you can deal with it! Pretty much like a baking hot Blackpool or somewhere else in the UK. Hot enough to give us all sunburn. My lesson that I learnt : get someone else to lotion your back. I did my own and missed out huge bits meaning I had a ridiculous looking burn. Not alot to do apart from beach, there was a cable car to a five star resort on the island but given that we're on a budget. ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An April 29th 2011

Lorenzo, Grant and Anthony did the Top Gear Experience thing and got bikes from Hue to Hoi An, six hour drive and they said it was amazing. Me and Frankie got the bus which was preetty nasty but it got us there was only like 5$. Met them easily as well at a hotel we had booked, and had a good evening in Hoi An, playing pool in an empty bar and pretty much choosing the music ourselves. Today we rented some bicycles for 1$ each and cycled around Hoi An. Obviously I am awful at cycling, one of the most childish and basic things! But I got the hang of it in the end and we cycled a couple of miles to a beach that we never found. Still quite fun. Didn't really take to ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » North Central Coast » Thua Thien - Huế » Hué April 29th 2011

We got back to Hanoi from Ha Long Bay by bus, after the staying the night on the bus. It was so hot the next day, we just sat and relaxed. The bus journey isn't the most pleasant but its survivable! We waited around for a few hours and then got the sleeper train to Hue, it was pretty easy and comfortable. Something we'd never done before! I think it would be much better than a sleeper bus but we're getting one of them tomorrow night so I'll let you all know... Hue is nice, half way between Hanoi and Hoi An in terms of views and the hustle and bustle really. The citadel is the only must see really, but it is really cool and picturesque. The next day we did a tour of the ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Northeast » Quang Ninh » Halong Bay April 29th 2011

Ha Long Bay was amazing. One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen - got some pretty good pics. Got a boat out into the bay and when it docked, we were allowed to jump from the top into the water. I did it twice, not the nicest tasting water ever and was sorta scary. We kayaked later, to a cave and back. Was fun, hadn't done it in years but it was a good way to see the bay and get to the cave. The cave was pretty cool, small so had to crawl a fair bit. It got dark pretty quickly outside so when we kayaked back it was pitch black. Felt a bit unsafe but the guides worked well to keep everyone together and in the end nothing went wrong at all! ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi April 23rd 2011

Hanoi! The roads are 100% times more mental than Bangkok. Bikes everywhere! Same roads regarding crossing the roads apply. Much better than Bangkok, the people are less persistent and everything is less seedy, which is good. The hostel we're staying at is good, backpackerry so theres a few people to talk to. Also, all five of us in a dorm together is good fun. We arrived and went straight for a nap in our dorm, early morning had taken it out of us. On the taxi from the airport into Hanoi you get a good grasp of their culture - pigs on the back of bikes, paddy fields, all sorts. CONSTANT horn beeping! Tried finding a crashed B52 bomber which had been left from the Vietnam War in a river this evening, no luck with that. ... read more
