From Hanoi, I began my adventure south, first stopping in Hue. And what an adventure it was! First was the rain. I decided to walk from my hostel in Hanoi to the train station because I was not happy that a taxi charged a extra dollar each for the dark (I was taking the night train that left at 11) and for the rain so that my taxi ride would have cost 4 dollars. This is outrageous considering the most you ever pay otherwise for a taxi is a dollar. So, I got on my high horse and decided to huff it the 3 kilometers. When I started it was just sprinkling so no problem. Then the rain increased until it was actually hurting it was falling so hard and fast and I had to take ... read more

After a mear 25 hours of travelling (including the trip back from the bay) today we felt it would be a good time to rest , do the laundry (which by the way is amazing and cheap) and maybe have a small trip around the local roads. This is pretty much all we done today spoke to a few people and watched the olyimpics. Tomorrow we head south so booked the bus, hostel and our flights from Ho Chi Min to Bangkok.... read more

Dear All Hello from Central Vietnam, second update of my trip so far, and having (as usual!) the most amazing time! What a country, and what lovely people! They really make you feel welcome here, and smiles abound wherever you go – and not those which are given to make a tourist dollar or two. These are genuine, heartfelt smiles and I have been initiating and reciprocating them wherever I go – they’re contagious! I must admit it’s rather noisy and hectic with the traffic in general (if you’ve seen my video uploaded onto my Facebook page, you’ll know what I mean!), but aside from this minor detraction, this really is an amazing, welcoming and lovely country, and I’m certainly having a great time of it. Writing this entry from my most comfortable room so far. ... read more

Hue is the kind of place that allows you the opportunity to embed yourself into the cultural history of Vietnam, by this I don't mean the war with the Americans (although this is also possible throughout the DMZ) I mean the history of the country through its dynasty and all that comes with this. I took the opportunity to do my first full flung touristy tour in Hue not because I'm a sucker for a sales pitch but because it seemed the best way to visit the Royal Tombs (or some of them at least) Pagoda and Citadel in one day. The price was really reasonable ($12) which included the bus tour throughout the day, lunch and a river cruise. The entrance fees to the sights were not included and this came to another $12 or ... read more

We left Hoi An for Hue on a tourist bus, it was the cheapest option, even cheaper than the local bus! We were last to get picked and couldn't sit together and I got the best seat (!) in the middle at the back of the bus, with a smelly little teenager falling asleep on my shoulder!!!! Then a load of locals got on, for free presumably, and sat on the floor clogging up the aisles. Our first impression of Hue wasn't the best and it didn't change. Our hotel was skanky and we just didn't get a good feel for it. Luckily we were next door to the cheapest caf we'd had the pleasure of dining in 'on thu wheels' and frequented it over the two days. Hue is a city full of history(although most ... read more

Vietnam 2 Hoi An The train trip although fairly uneventful was intriguing in that as we finished the journey the attendant came through our cabins asking us to clean them up. We duly did as she asked and had all the rubbish in the bin in no time and about 10 minutes before the train arrived at the Da Nang Train station. On leaving the train, we had a 45 minutes bus ride to the town of Hoi An crossing a small bridge to an island where the Van Loi Hotel is located. Hoi An is a highly regarded destination for travellers around the world because of its charm and history. It is an ancient town and a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring beautiful architecture dating back 200 years. Visitors can experience riverside dining and enjoy ... read more

This morning, I have a little bit of time before my flight to Hue, so I decide to venture out of the hotel for breakfast. The sun is still hiding, but it feels even hotter than usual. Vietnam has a long tradition of street food. Vendors in the old quarter patrol the streets in the early morning already with baskets of delicious snack foods such as tamarind pods, pastries, baguette sandwiches, croissants, sticky rice, and fresh fruit. Some cooks carry savory or sweet treats wrapped in banana leaves, which are steamed or roasted. I decide to go with baguette, croissants, and fruit, accompanied with strong Vietnamese coffee, the whole thing for a mere 8,000 dongs (40 cents). Excellent once more! I wander the streets for a while before returning to my hotel where a taxi is ... read more

We were up at 7:00am to get ready and have breakfast and be in the lobby by 8:30am for our tour of Hue. Jess stayed at the hotel as she wasn't feeling well and this tour was going to be a really long and draining day. We met our tour guide Mr Tuu and jumped in our minibus and we were on our way. We drove over the Perfume River under the wall and to Hue Imperial City. The brick wall surrounding Imperial City is 10,000m long. Construction of the city was started in 1804 and completed in 1833. It was world heritage listed in 1993. We walked through quite a few different areas, seeing bits that had been restored and others that are yet to be restored after they were bombed in the war. After, ... read more

I was up early at 6:15am as I wasn't really sleepy so I got ready and made my way down to reception to pick up our dresses that had been delivered the night before. Then went and had some breakfast on the top level. Jam toast, watermelon, bananas and juice was it for today, you don't really feel like eating when it's already so hot. We made our way back to the room, packed up the last of our stuff and made our way to the lobby to meet the others. We put our stuff on the bus and jumped on and we waved goodbye to Hoi An. Within maybe about 20mins driving we made it to our first stop at Marble Mountain. There are 150 big marble steps to climb up to the lookout and ... read more
