There is a night market in the streets of the old quarter, but not really anything that’s worth buying!!! The only thing that Leah and I found to be any good was a wolly hat each – as its getting cold – and a stall that sells foooood!!!!! And its cheap as well which is always a good thing!!!! We made a day trip to theMuseumofEthnologyand got our first local bus there! Number 14 from the lake takes you almost there but we told the bus driver where we wanted to go and he just shouts at you when you are almost there! The bus back is from the other side of the road and its only 3000 Dong each so cheap enough! This museum is actually better than we first thought and acually takes a ... read more

Geo: 16.4635, 107.585We hadn't planned on stopping in Hue, but we were talked into it by other travelers that had just come from there. We only have 3 years so we can't stop everywhere but we thought we'd take a flyer on this place. To get to Hue we did another of the overnight Vietnamese trains and were bunked in with an Aussie couple once again- I've got to think that at any given point in time, at least half of the population of Australia is not actually in Australia! We traded a number of stories but they took first prize with a funny story about a Vietnamese scam we hadn't heard of yet- apparently they had asked hotel staff about cooking school options and were told that the hotel chef would give them lessons- they ... read more

Hello everyone and merry Christmas! Last time we were leaving Hanoi to go to Ninh Binh. Ninh Binh is like Ha Long Bay but on earth. The town in itself doesn’t have a lot to offer but all around there are beautiful things to see. So we rented some bicycles and drove around. There are temples to see, lovely cruises to do on the river where they drive the boat with their feet (which is quite funny to look at!), there is a nice small hill (with 460 stiff steps to arrive at the top!) to see a stunning point of view of the river. We saw a magnificent temple, the Bai Dinh Pagoda, which is still under construction, but which is already something to visit. This pagoda will be the biggest one in south East ... read more

Michael: 29th Oct 2011 Hue (Hway) after getting off a very bumpy train ride we walked 30mins in the rain to our hotel. we had breakfast and checked in. on the way we were stopped by a seller shouting "BUY SOMETING" (he was only selling lighters) when we said no thank you he shouted WHY NOT!!! to which i replied i dont smoke then he sapped me on my back and shouted GOOD FOR YOU! BAD FOR ME and walked off laughing. After a relax in our room we booked a tour to visit the royal tombs (which are only accesable by boat) for the following day. today we decided to head out to the imperial palace which was heavily destroyed by the USA . The palace that was left was nice and looked a little ... read more

My travel plans were exciting - we got to Hue and then the plane did a funny thing and stopped mid-decent only to "take-off" again mid-air..... then we were told that the weather was too bad - we'll take a holding pattern... then 15 minutes later – “we are diverting to Da Nang” It is 2 hours away from Hue by car. Then get off the plane and wait in the airport for 2 hours- watching the CRAZY German run around the airport harassing staff and saying “VAITING VAITING – Why are we VAITING!!!” Honestly he pretty much yelled this every 2-3 minutes. The funniest part was when he met 2 Australian ladies and said “Oh Auzzie’s – you have hoppy hoppy Kangaroo’s” and then proceeded to demonstrate the hoppy hoppy kangaroos by hopping around the ... read more

After an amazing trip to Halong Bay, myself and Vinny arrived back in Hanoi to have a bite to eat and get our bags from the hostel before boarding a 14 hour overnight train to Hue, in Central Vietnam. We met a polish guy and two girls at our hotel who we got talking to and it turns out we were all on the same carriage of the train to Hue together! They are living in London and their English was brilliant (and the guy is an Arsenal fan!) so once on the train, we sat with them for a couple of hours chatting away which was a bit of craic! With this train, just like in China, we were in a four berth sleeper, this time with two German/Russian men (vinny’s guess) with no English ... read more

Geo: 16.4635, 107.585After spending a low key day in Hanoi and buying our open bus ticket we were on the road in an overnight bus to Hue. Before we had been liaising with couchsufers in Vietnam to see if we were able to spend a day working with some locals in the rice fields, but we were a few weeks to late and all the fields had been cultivated, a bit of a bummer, I was really looking forward to that experience, nevermind. The trip took around 12 hours and we arrived in a more quieter and low key town compared to the loud and chaotic area of the Old Quarter in Hanoi. We checked in to our hotel and then set about thinking of what we wanted to see and do. We spent the first half ... read more

“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky” – Cesare Pavese There are 10 million people living in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Half of these inhabitants own a motorbike/moped/motorcycle/scooter – call it what you like. Throw in the couple of million quintessentially Vietnamese bicyclists with the conical hats and facemasks and you have a city which is heaving and buzzing with life and makes crossing the road an art form. Getting from one side of the street to another is a skill one has to learn early on one’s arrival in this metropolis. Wait patiently at the kerb and you ... read more
