by Polona After a night spent on the bus, we arrived to Hue early in the morning. The moment we stepped of the bus we were “attacked” by touts offering us taxis, hotels...We escaped to a local eatery and had our fix of morning coffee (Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk is, to say the very least yummy!) and then, to avoid the whole bargaining process, we walked over to our hotel. We decided we would not go to the backapckers' first choice – Hue Backpackers – as seeing the prices and having experienced the hostel in Hanoi already, we knew we could find a descent enough room for the same price. After doing our research we stayed at a hotel called Bamboo Hotel. Not only did we get a really nice room, but the staff there ... read more

I wrote most of this yesterday and planned to finish it this morning, but that didn't happen for a variety of reasons and I am too lazy to go through it and change what I had written, so I'll just add a bit about today here. Sorry if it is a bit of a mess. Today I was supposed to leave for Hoi An, a small city about 4 hours south of here. After hearing plenty about the flooding in Thailand and other parts of SE Asia, I had some firsthand experince with it today. When I woke up, the road by my hostel was covered in water. My hostel is near the end of the block, close to a main road that was still dry, so it wasn't bad by me. Farther down the road ... read more

Once again we were up at 0630 and to our surprise it wasn’t to the sound of rain on the roof. A sheepish look out on to the street two stories below us showed no sign of the river from last night and there was barely a cloud in the sky. We took full advantage of it and headed straight to the Citadel on the other side of the river. And no – we didn’t want a cyclo thank you. We did want a drink before going in so we went back to the “cafe” that we’d been to the day before. We had two coffees, four iced teas and bought a pack of cigarettes – all for D74,000 (NZ$5). We also saw the puppy again and decided to christen him “Din Dins” Inside the citadel ... read more

I woke up somewhere in the vicinity of 20 times throughout the night as the train stopped and started but actually managed to get a reasonable nights sleep. We were due into Hue around 0830 but finally rolled in at 1030 to overcast, humid and threatening conditions. Although we had no sleeping quarters booked, we picked a cafe out of the Lonely Planet and walked in that direction. Once through the gates of the train station we were hit with all the usual touts. No – we didn’t want a hotel, no – we didn’t want a cyclo, no – we didn’t want a tour, no – we didn’t want a taxi. Truth is we did want two of the above but one thing we’ve learned from previous trips is that the price for said requirements ... read more

Xin Chao, One week on and we didn't go for a dive in the end as it turned out that the reef was only shallow and you could snorkel it perfectly well. We went on a boat trip with a couple of people from our guesthouse and had a really good time. The coral was great and although we didn't see anything big, we saw some nice reef fish. It was definitely a good warm up for Malaysia and Indonesia where, touch wood there will be sharks and rays by the plenty. Eating a 'local feast' on the boat and jumping from the top deck into the crystal clear water wasn't bad either, although my cannonball wasn't very impressive next to every other persons perfect (and I'm only half exaggerating) swallow dives. After spending about 3 ... read more

In Hue I was dropped off at the hue Backpackers… sister hostel to the Hanoi Backpackers so I knew I would be in for a good time! The staff at the Hue Backpackers are lovely and friendly, especially Lien the assistant manager who is very sweet and helpful (Lien taught me some very useful Vietnamese phrases…). Smiles all round meant a warm welcome. I checked myself in and settled in for an afternoon beer and a read to find out about Hue. Sat on the first floor balcony I met Nina, a Swiss girl also travelling on her own. We got chatting and before long more people started to turn up. First was a large crowd of English (rabble nonetheless whom I was destined to meet again down the road in Hoi An) and a very ... read more

On winter holiday in Russia, it’s quite cold so my husband and I decided to make a plan to Vietnam. The reason why I chose that Southeast Asia country is to be recommended by my closest friend, Julia, she said booked a tour via vietnamgrouptour.com and had a great trip. The tour guide met us at Noi Bai Airport at around 17h00, a bit late cause the flight was delayed on account of bad weather. However, we immediately get back spirit while met that man, Mr.Tho, a nice person, who positively invite us to enjoy Pho Bat Dan, typical dish of Hanoians. The next day is tour in Hanoi city, we have already taken a lot of photos around Tran Quoc Pagoda, Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple and so on as well as walking around ... read more

The twelve hour journey from Hanoi to Hue turned into a long fifteen hour slog. It wasn't by any means the worst ride we'd taken so far but shards of broken glass behind my pillow, intermittent slams from the swinging carriage doors and the constant rocking from the rickety rail tracks didn't make for the most comfortable nights kip. We shared our 4 berth cabin with two other German ladies, both were friendly and polite but kept themselves to themselves. Scott slept well by the sounds of it up on top bunk. To my immature amusement he'd accidently let one slip whilst in the lad of nod, leaving me below slightly embarrassed but still sniggering and pinching my nose cocooned inside my silk liner reacting just as a teenage boy would. Our German neighbours peered inquisitively ... read more

So Mike and I are sitting in the lobby of our hotel in Huế for the last time, trying to kill an hour before we head off to catch our train. There's not really much to say about today since we've only been awake for a few hours. We went to breakfast. I had an almost identical breakfast to yesterday. We watched TV in the room (Dog Whisperer: not my idea of fun) and packed up our stuff ready for our 12 o'clock check-out. This was going fine (but not great; she misunderstood our room number and tried to give us 3 people's Japanese passports) until we asked the receptionist to call our next hotel to tell them that we'd be arriving at about 4am, so could they possibly have our room ready so that we ... read more

I have Vietnam Fatigue. Our guide book mentions beggar fatigue, where one gets fed up of being begged at and having tatty products shoved under one's nose, and this is contributing to my Vietnam Fatigue. But it goes deeper than that. I'm totally fed up with the Vietnamese. Period. Save for a couple of nice, helpful Vietnamese employees, I've been really irritated by their laziness, and the constant hawking, and their scamming. I hate that everyone puts their prices up to an unreasonable level just because they see we aren't native, like the HCMC cyclo driver who tried to charge us almost $8 each for a 1-minute cycle ride. The logic is, as explained by the guidebook and also some of the lowlifes trying to sell us utter garbage, that since we are foreign, we can ... read more
