We arrived in Hue after getting the overnight train from Hanoi, the Livertrans Express is easily the most luxuriest train we have been on so far even though it was a bit bumpy! Twelve hours in a luxury cabin with a few cans of Tiger was no problem. Hue is on the most peoples list of places to visit in Vietnam and comes recommended in the Lonely Planet so we included it in our stay but neither of us could really work out why! We found a nice enough hotel with a pool (of course) and within budget but there wasn't really much to do or see other than the citadel. We therefore decided that this would be a good place to hire our first moped and go exploring on our own ala Top Gear style. ... read more

Well here I am in Hue. It's not a long way from Hoi An, only 150kms, but it took 5 hours in the bus because the main highway is in bad repair in a lot of places and most traffic travels at 50km/hour max. The beaches around Da Nang are having a building boom - huge resorts and residential estates with the big names like Marriott and Hyatt involved. I think there must be an interntional airportat Da Nanag from the American War so tourists can fly in/fly out. The resorts rival anything I have seen in Bali or Thailand - or on the Gold Coast for that matter. I reckon that the suspension is taken out of all vehicles in Vietnam before they are sold - it would have to be for the ride to ... read more

Welcome to my nightmares. This particular nightmare takes place on the night train from Ha Noi to Hue. I get to the train station in Ha Noi an hour before the train is due. A train pulls in just as I arrive. But where is it going? I can't quite figure it out so I just give my ticket to the conductor and he lets me on. Must be right then. My ticket has number 22 on it (my birthday number and also today's date!) but the rooms are numbered from one to six. Eventually I work out that it's actually my bed number that's 22 and I have to look into the rooms (as the room number is not printed on the ticket) to find out exactly where bed 22 is hiding. I open the ... read more

(Hallo) und Cam On!

Dear Folks: After receiving a couple of concerned e-mails regarding our situation in Vietnam given the Japanese disaster, everything here, in a word, is good. It wasn't until we received Tom Denson's e-mail that we learned about the earthquake. Vietnamese TV news is devoid of any earthquake coverage. I should note that there isn't much love to lose between Vietnam and Japan. First there was the invasion and then the forced labor and then the starvation.... You get the picture. We'll check the news services today regarding Indonesia as that is our last stop in May. Other than that it is a rare sunny day in Hue which we intend to fully enjoy. Our prayers go out to those fellow travelers less fortunate in light of what has happened in Japan. God Bless, Mike and Karen ... read more

One cloudy day in China Beach is barely tolerable. Two days is insufferable. We figured that Hue was as good a place as any to endure the cooler weather. Probably the best choice given the fine food that Hue is known for. We paid our bill with Hoa, dropped some laundry with Giao, packed 4 days worth of clothing in one bag and deposited the other with Sarah for safe keeping as we planned to return to China Beach when the weather turned. Jeff and Truc found our plan a good one and decided to come along to keep us company. Jeff is a US Army Vet who served in Da Nang and the DMZ from 1968 to 1969. Truc is a human resources director at a large and expensive Saigon hotel. She is a slender ... read more

Plans for the day are to go to someplace called Ba Na and after that off to Hue. Had breakfast at the hotel buffet...similiar to Nha Trang but not as good. Overall the hotel last night was nice but not as nice as the one in Nha Trang. Guess we were spoiled in Nha Trang. I would say that the hotel last night is in a learning process for guests, etc. and the one in NT has more experience due to the volume of tourists. We headed up the highway to Ba Na, no idea what it was other than it had something to do with old temples, etc. When we arrived it was a new facility that is set up with a cable car run to the top of the mountain. I wasn't sure what ... read more

We arrived in sleepy Hue (pronounced Hu-wey) on Saturday afternoon and within 5 minutes of arriving, I had a slightly embarrassing incident when I decided to get stroppy with the manager of the wrong hotel about our booking (which he obviously knew nothing about!) Another of my now regular 'Basil Fawlty' moments. We eventually realised that we were in the wrong place, apologised and left! Our actual guesthouse is run by a little family who can't do enough to help. When we arrive they sit us down and give us a bowl of homemade soup, before we even see our room. This soon becomes a theme and they offer us snacks and drinks every time we walk through the reception! Unfortunately Hue itself isn't the most exciting place we've been to. The main attraction is the ... read more

After 12 long hours - which was 2 hours longer than scheduled - we arrived in Hue. With little or no sleep we were all very tired and as I’m sure you can imagine, we were not sorry to see the back of the bus, or its crazy staff. Many of us chose to put our shoes on before we got off the bus just to annoy Mr angry even further. He shook his finger at us and shouted some rather unsavoury words but none of us cared - well its not as if he could throw us off now! Its definitely not a trip that any of us would want to do ever again but I’m still glad we did it. Looking back it makes me laugh. It is certainly an experience I will never ... read more
