I'm not really sure if it is worth me writing a blog for today, because all we've been doing is travelling home. But I'm really bored, because there's still at least 30 mins before we can board our plane at we've been in this airport (Sublaskdfjldakfljsdlfkjlf airport) for almost 6 hours now. Also, all the comfy chairs seem to have gone. So it is the crazily low internet chair for me! We got up pretty late because the first item on our agenda for the day was check out. Mike tried to check us in online for our flights, but yet again Vietnam Airlines' online service wasn't up to that job. Check out took a little while, because we had to explain to the receptionist that we wanted to pay separately for the things we'd charged ... read more

This is a sad moment (22:15 GMT+7, Thursday 15th September 2011). That is because this may be the last blog post that I (Elana) ever write. But, never fear, because it may not. I may decide to write one about our LONG journey home to the good old U of K (that doesn't really work, but never mind. You catch my drift...). And then I may even decide to start my own blog about... stuff. My life. Things. Life, the Universe, and Everything. That sort of thing. But, then again, I may not. ............................. Emotional (well, not that emotional; I was once told by a computer that I am emotionally cold, so that is the best stab at sentimentality I could muster) possible farewells to the world of blogging aside, I have a blog to write ... read more

Hey avid blog readers, Today is my birthday :D yep, I'm officially OLD (as a certain Tali Osen would say- (at least I can now legally drink in the US)). This year it is the big 2 1, which is important as it will now be my perennial age Mike: from now on, when people ask how old I am, my default answer will be 21. Just like old people do. My birthday came in whilst we were on the train to Hanoi on the epic 14 hour journey. By that point, I was the only one awake in the carriage, and so was left to wish myself happy birthday. How sad. . Arriving in Hanoi, we decided to walk to the hotel as it was quite close, although I have to write that I was ... read more

Hello world! Man, is it good to have internet again! However, the lack of internet over the past few days means that Mike and I have a LOT of catching up to do. So, I'm writing this post about our (long) journey from Hue to Hanoi, but by now we have left Hanoi (contrary to the location data for this post), and are, in fact, in Bangkok. We are waiting (for hours and hours...) for our flight home. We can't even check in for another hour, and we've already been in the airport for 2 and a half hours. But I digress. We had been excited about our overnight train journey to Hanoi for a while. Neither Mike nor I had ever been on a train for 14 hours before (I'm fairly sure the longest train ... read more

So Mike and I are sitting in the lobby of our hotel in Huế for the last time, trying to kill an hour before we head off to catch our train. There's not really much to say about today since we've only been awake for a few hours. We went to breakfast. I had an almost identical breakfast to yesterday. We watched TV in the room (Dog Whisperer: not my idea of fun) and packed up our stuff ready for our 12 o'clock check-out. This was going fine (but not great; she misunderstood our room number and tried to give us 3 people's Japanese passports) until we asked the receptionist to call our next hotel to tell them that we'd be arriving at about 4am, so could they possibly have our room ready so that we ... read more

I have Vietnam Fatigue. Our guide book mentions beggar fatigue, where one gets fed up of being begged at and having tatty products shoved under one's nose, and this is contributing to my Vietnam Fatigue. But it goes deeper than that. I'm totally fed up with the Vietnamese. Period. Save for a couple of nice, helpful Vietnamese employees, I've been really irritated by their laziness, and the constant hawking, and their scamming. I hate that everyone puts their prices up to an unreasonable level just because they see we aren't native, like the HCMC cyclo driver who tried to charge us almost $8 each for a 1-minute cycle ride. The logic is, as explained by the guidebook and also some of the lowlifes trying to sell us utter garbage, that since we are foreign, we can ... read more

Hello folks, Mike and I are in the Vietnamese city of Huế, today (it is pronounced hway!). We've not had an especially productive day, as it happens. We got off to a very slow start because Mike wouldn't get up this morning, claiming that he hadn't got any sleep because the onions kept him up, whatever that means! But once we were up, we went down to breakfast. It was really good. They had lots of flavours of jams. I tried pineapple jam and grape jam (this just tasted like the really artifical American grape juice, so was a bit of a disappointment). And they had an omelette bar for Mike, so that he could have his daily quota of WAY too many eggs. I tried dried kiwi too. And they had passion fruits (yay!). However, ... read more

We've now arrived in Hue (pronounced 'whey'), the former Imperial City of Vietnam, which was heavily destroyed in the Vietnam War and attacked during the infamous Tet Offensive, which turned the tide of public feeling in the US about the war (that's the end of the history lesson....for the time being). Having been given the option by Ms Anh (the travel agent) to take the bus to Hue at either 8am or 1.30pm, we decided to opt for extra sleep and chose the latter departure. This meant that we were able to wake up really late. Well, that's how I wish it had happened. Instead, Elana had to have yet another fitting for her dress- this time at 10am! And Elana wasn't even sure that she wanted the dress anymore. I was therefore kicked out of ... read more

This is Elana, signing in again: My last post about today ended with me being angry about the towels. After I blogged about this, we headed into town for our first fittings. Our first stop was Bibi, for Mike's shirts. The wine-coloured one was perfect, but the pink-and-white-striped one was big in the back and needed altering. Then we went to Yaly, more than half an hour early. Mike tried his suit and said that he felt like The Incredible Hulk, since he had no movement in it whatsoever. I missed this probably hilarious sight though, because I was too busy being hoisted into my dress. Several tailors were enlisted to help get me into it! The skirt part of the dress was fine, but a bit loose around the waist, but the top was a ... read more
