I am not a sociologist or an anthropologist, so I hesitate to posit theories concerning the deep-rooted psychological causes of cultural behavior shared by the individuals that make up that culture. Even if they may seem evident to me, I’ll leave any intellectual asseverations to the experts because mine will surely be missing facets I could not even conceive. However, I am more than happy with being an observer, reporting on what Klaudia and I have seen, and on what we’ve experienced along the way. And, in all honestly, knowing that subjectivity is part of the fun in writing about our experiences, I do try to keep any dramatization or exaggeration to a minimum. Thus, it is not a question of having misinterpreted perceptions on people’s attitudes towards us, or in misrepresenting them – we experienced ... read more

In Hanoi, we weighed up our onward travel options and decided on a North - South open bus ticket... 6 stops, about 1,200km, flexible dates - £30. The first stop after a 15 hour overnight sleeper bus was Hue, a nice first stop with an easy to navigate new town, south of the river and main attraction old citidel north of the river. The 19th century citidel area is contained within a moat and city wall and is accessed by one of the 10 gates the most popular being on the southern side nearest the main hotels and restaurants (handy). Within the city wall are a further 2 concentric areas; the imperial city and the purple forbidden city. The imperial city is within another moat and defensive wall and entered through an impressive 5 gate structure ... read more

Don’t you just love Asian bus schedules? Hmmm… ‘Yes, should be here somewhere between 8 and 9…’ Always so precise! ;) So once we were told that our bus would come between 8 and 9pm, we thought that probably it would come somewhere around 10 or even later… Taking into account that it was coming from Hanoi and we experienced this part of the journey the day before already, well… anything could happen… To be honest it didn’t really matter to us what time the bus would be there anyway… We were tired after the whole day of driving around Ninh Binh, had no room to stay at and relax anymore as had to check out in the morning, so all we could do is have dinner, a beer or two and just patiently wait for ... read more

Today, after finding out the previous day there was a beach about 15km away, we asked the hotel to sort us a cab to take us there. We basically spent the day at the beach, joined by Christina (Rose's friend from Austria) soaking up the hot rays (getting burnt) and swimming in the South China Sea. Later on we went out for dinner and I had Hues well known dish, Bun Bo Hue. We decided to have an early night (couldn't handle another night of more beer). We also booked our bus for Hoi An for the next day.... read more

After the most amazing night of sleep in the most amazingly gorgeous hotel (all for a mere $15 a night) we were picked up nice and early by Trung and Mr Tien. I don't mind telling you, I was pretty nervous about the whole motorbike thing. But these weren't mopeds nor were they sports bikes they were just quite roomy motorbikes. After all of our bags were strapped to the side of the bikes and were were put into our very attractive helmets we set off into the Hue morning rush hour. Hue is the biggest city in central Vietnam (and I believe it was pretty heavily damaged in the war) but the rush hour was fine. I was on Mr tien's bike and his English wasn't the best but he kept checking I was okay ... read more

Our trip from Cat Ba island to Hue was not as straight forward as we had hoped. First our bus was late and we knew we were fairly tight on time anyway. Then we were put onto a rather overcrowded boat rather than the rapid hydrofoil of our journey there. Thankfully that safely deposited us on the other side and we were herded onto a bus to Haiphong where we were hassled for coffee and snacks. Having declined them both for the umpteenth time, we were told there would be a 20 minute wait for our bus to Hanoi. Not swayed by this, we stood our ground and didn't order anything. Lo and behold, a minute later the bus arrived! The two and a half hour ride to Hanoi took a little longer than planned because ... read more

Hue, pretty much the epicentre of the Vietnam war, and the ancient capital, I was apprehensive about coming here. We had had various reports from people we'd encountered so far of how they didn't really like it, but I brushed these off, thinking, "We're not the average backpackers". As usual I was right. It was utterly lovely, despite the unpleasantness of the journey there. There are 6 beds per cabin and we were in “Hard Sleeper AC” class. The bunks weren't the most comfy thing in the world, but were serviceable enough. No the main problem was our fellow passengers. The first people to share our cabin were a middle aged Vietnamese couple. From the beginning of the journey the man was playing some Vietnamese pop music out of the speakers on his phone, which his ... read more
