Early start for our Mekong Delta day trip which for ease we booked through the hotel. The 20-seater coach picked us up from the hotel at 7.30am and we stopped at a couple more hotels to pick up the rest of the passengers. Our guide was Tommy, a Vietnamese with excellent English, a wicked sense of humour and a very expressive face especially when he winked. He entertained us along the way with humourous snippets of information. We stopped after a couple of hours to “sing a song”, as he referred to it, at a Craft complex of course. Stop was really not long enough for any serious shopping and indeed, if we had intended souvenir shopping this trip, we would have been disappointed as Tommy kept us on the move past quite a number of ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry no pics on this blog just an update this time. After 2 months in Can Tho where I was working sparsely, I got an opportunity to move about an hour and a half by motorbike north, still in the Mekong Delta, just outside Vinh Long a town called Cai Be. I was told by my recruiter it was a VERY small town, but while smaller than Can Tho it's a medium sized city with just about everything I need except a grocery store which is ok, I want to go down to Can Tho to visit another teacher at least once per month and can do my "Pasta Run' to the supermarket there anyway. The classes are starting to pick up a bit now, but still not getting to that 25 hours per ... read more

This morning we departed early by boat to visit the floating markets of Cai Rang, the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta serving a large area. Here we wove among boats, each selling a different kind of fruit and vegetable, some a full service snack boat selling fresh coffee and juices. Each boat displays whatever they are selling on a long stick hanging above the boat. If you want t0o purchase anything you wave the boat over and the driver will attach themselves with a grappling hook to your boat. We bought some pineapple and coconuts to snack on for our trip to our next stop. We then went to a nearby island to a rice noodle factory where we saw how they were made. Again like the coconut factory, the factory was comprised of ... read more

Today we started what is the beginning of a 3 day/2 night Mekong delta tour that will lead us up the Mekong into Cambodia. Travel in this region is difficult so we took the guesswork out of it and booked with an agency ($70 pp) that included tours, meals, lodging and boat and bus transportation. A 2 hr. drive out of Saigon brought us to My Tho, considered the gateway to the Mekong (the river of nine dragons). The Mekong delta is considered Vietnam’s “rice basket” and consists of endless canals and waterways linking the jungle with green fields of rice. The mighty Mekong river is the 12th largest river in the world and flows through this region after winding it’s way from the Tibetan plateau. We boarded a ferry to Ben Tre, crossing the chocolate ... read more

Hey everyone! It's been a while since I posted anything I know, But I have been in the process of getting documents sent, contacting the Embassy to get things notarized etc etc so it's been pretty busy trying to get this work visa. Tet holiday (Lunar New Year) is just about finished so things are starting to open up again as usual and I would have liked to get out and go the beach or something during the holiday, but as I mentioned I have been pretty busy and the lack of funds put a damper on things as well. I did however finally get out and do something I FINALLY made it down to the infamous floating market here in Can Tho City and I have to see it's pretty much what I expected, but ... read more

Accommodation - Bassac Boat 3 - on the Mekong River Accommodation - Victoria Hotel Chau Doc Weather - Hot, sunny/cloudy 30c We enjoyed a wonderful Vietamese meal, on our last night in Ho Chi Minh City at May Restaurant which we had found on tripadvisor. A taxi ride through the city was very cheap, only £2, and we then walked up a tiny alley between houses and shops, with the three storey townhouse restaurant at the end. We were seated on the top floor, on an open veranda, overlooking the small street and houses. The staff were very friendly. Our meal of crab, prawn and pork spring rolls with different sauces for each style of roll was followed by sautéed beef with onions and pork in pepper sauce - wonderfully tasty and very reasonably priced. The ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City There couldn't be a greater contrast between slick and orderly Singapore and Ho Chi Minh city, where chaos reigns in all areas, and definitely the most hectic buzzing city we have been to so far. Nevertheless we were pleased to be back in the 'real' South East Asia again and spent many a half hour on street corners just admiring the traffic chaos and the lack of crashes or squashed pedestrians. But a couple of days of fumes were enough to bear and we moved on as soon as we could. Cat Tien National Park The 50km journey north east to Cat Tien National Park was an arduous 5 hour journey through endless suburbs and never ending traffic jams. But after a short ferry ... read more

Mekong Delta area is an awesome part òf the world. We had the privilege òf touring it via luxury boat with our own crew, customized shore tours and ridiculously fine dining on board. Started with a "speed boat"ride to Chau Doc, just inside Vietnam. We were rickshawed to our hotel. Had some time for a short walk around town and, of course, another great soup and hot pot dinner. A drive the next morning to Can Tho, the biggest city in the delta (+1 million). Visit a very busy floating market specializing in wholesale fruits and vegetables. Cool. Then we are delivered to our big deluxe boat, home for the next two wonderful days. First night we shared it with a nice Argentine family. Second day and night we were the quếens of the boat -- ... read more
