Monday 30th September 2013 Breakfast on top floor of hotel looking out over Can Tho, the rain looks like it has gone away for the morning at least. Caught our $1 taxi to the other hotel where the rest of the group was staying. A short walk to the jetty where we caught a boat to take us to the Cai Rang floating markets. The markets are a wholesale market and they show what they are selling by tying it to a bamboo pole and having it at the back of the boat. Being on a boat is being a captive audience as there are small boats that pull up alongside you and try and sell you soft drink, coffee, coconuts, bananas or pineapples. We shared a coconut freshly cut with a couple of straws for ... read more

Sunday 29th September 2013 Early pick up, and a full bus on Highway 1 (or as Phong, our guide says, Lowway with elephant holes) 20min down the road and phone call to say someone was left behind so a little stop on side of highway while they caught up and bought the missing passenger. Off again. Couple of hours down to the Mekong delta. I have never seen so much water. The Upper Mekong river was crossed first. It is huge. Stopped in the provence of Ben Tre and visited a small family "farm". Had some fresh fruit and tea and was entertained by some Southern Vietnamese Folk music - very different, the musical instruments and the tune the singer sings doesn't seem to match, but entertaining none the less. Then a walk down to the ... read more

Hello for the final time of this trip! We spent Monday travelling to Vietnam, a very long 9 hours on a bus but it was worth it to get to beautiful Vietnam, although it was a very soggy Vietnam when we arrived at 7 pm. We arrived at our home stay with the local family, we stayed next to the family not actually in the families house but felt more authentic than my last home stay in Peru. We arrived and were greeted by the whole family, once we had picked our beds it was time for dinner. We found some huge purple lizards which were living in the rooms. The family cooked in front of us on open fires and made almost a savoury fresh pancake with bean sprouts and meat. They then brought lots ... read more

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and a burgeoning center of tourism for the country. Lying in the Gulf of Thailand, it has a small population chiefly living in two towns: Duong Dong and An Thoi. Other than these two somnolent hubs, it is an island of thick forest and long beaches lined with tall coconut trees, the few roads occasionally lined with beach resorts, all of it providing a tranquil emptiness that was a whimsical reprieve from the Vietnamese mainland’s busyness. The peacefulness, however, is planned to end soon as the Vietnamese government is committed to turning Phu Quoc into the next Phuket, especially evidenced by some of the construction occurring. Happily, for the time-being, the island is still an escape. And it would have provided the perfect haven from our nearly-ending trip had it ... read more

After our heavy negotiating and our too good to be true price we figured that today would be a bit of a let down. How wrong can two people be?!? We were picked up from our hotel in a brand new saloon car with a climate akin to Siberia in January and whisked into the Saigon rush hour. The ride was smooth and we had a little snooze as we drove through the suburbs and south towards the Mekong delta. We drove for around two hours before pulling up next to a bus full of tourists at a dock where various boats were moored. I don't mind telling you my heart sunk a little when we saw some of the same people we toured the cu chi tunnels with yesterday clamber off the bus. We waited ... read more

FACES OF VIETNAM...HCMC & the Mekong Delta Actually. When one visits the land of a zillion mopeds...I understand there are more mopeds in Vietnam than any other country in the World...it stands to reason you cannot ask the zillion riders for prior permission to take their photos. And so I departed from usual practice when seeking portraits of those in helmets...those as pillions...those on mopeds...probably half the population. When one visits the Mekong Delta...those not on mopeds...are cruising or zipping along in boats of every shape & size...or abiding in rumpled stilted dwellings by the river bank. And so I departed from usual practice when seeking portraits of those on the Mekong...probably the other half of the population. But fortunately for me there were some members of the population that at the time I passed...were not ... read more

MISCHIEF ON THE MEKONG Part 3...Kidnapped & Extorted...The Polly Diaries. Two tom cats yowling into the night...a distant horn of a barge...a midnight knock on a door. The knocking repeated...louder this time...a man's voice wrenched out of deep sleep calling out "Who is it? Who is it?" Denise awoken in the next room..."That's Shane's voice?" A female voice "It's Housekeeping...please open the door." "What do you want?" "I want to see Polly." "Why?" "We have received a message in reception. Please open the door. I want to see if Polly is alright." There is a pause in the darkness. "She's not here" came Shane's pained reply. "Please open the door Sir...I can hear a voice...Who have you got in there?" "That's my friend Sheba." "Please open the door Sir...I want to see if Sheba is alright." ... read more

Okay so as we last left off, I was hoping they might let us on a bus with Ikelos if we paid for extra seats but no such luck. My friend told me that they said they were scared he might bite somebody. So we had to take a private van to her hometown of Sa Det. It was more expensive then I would have liked but at least it was a really nice ride. We each had our own seat to just lay across, even Ikelos. As usual Mom's hospitality was great. When we arrived she went to get food for us to have lunch at her house. Then she went to find a dog friendly hotel in town for Ikelos and I. And once again she paid for it. She also took me out ... read more
