Hi all. Well we arrived this morning after a long..... Flight. Missed a might's sleep and couldn't quite work out what day it is! Once we landed we went straight to the bike shop and were all fitted for our bikes. Saigon is mad. Motorbikes everywhere and you take your life in your hands when crossing the road! Lovely hotel, not quite sure what I was expecting but it is fine. a group of us walked round Saigon today, going to the market and the war museum. All very interesting. Been out for a meal as a group tonight, getting to know everyone's names, but three more new people came today so it's quite a challenge to remember everyone.ready for bed now and it's only 8.45 but we have to be up for breakfast at 6am. ... read more

Over the last three days, Stuart and I have been making our way from Phnom Penh in Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh City(Saigon) in Vietnam. We opted for a boat and bus journey so that we could see some of the famous Mekong delta. Our journey started In Phnom Penh, where we were told that we could not do the whole boat trip as the night before the propeller from the boat had broken. We weren't sure if this was to do with the tropical storm that had been going on over night. It was terrible. I woke up in the middle of the night and heard loads of noise. The wind was coming in from under the door, through the windows and seemed to be howling! I looked outside and it was pouring with rain ... read more

We are in Vietnam!! One if the countries I've been looking forward to most and also our last before we head to Australia. We flew into Ho Chi Minh City and caught the local bus to the backpacker area in district 1. We had no idea when to get off the bus but luckily there were lovely local girls who helped us find our way. We stepped off the bus and into traffic mayhem, crossing the road was a real risk of harm and took us a while to get the hang of, we started by always crossing with an Asian. We checked into our hostel and went in search of some local food, we knew we had found a good place because it was teeming with Vietnamese, we couldn't read the menu but we noticed ... read more

A launch into Sa Dec, and once ashore, we toured the town on foot. Marguerite Duras' home is a small museum, where the writer lived with her Chinese lover, she is who La Marguerite is named for, and this home is very lovely indeed. We then toured the local market, another with many unique items you would never see in the U.S., alive and kicking, because there is no refrigeration, things need to be extra freshly killed prior to cooking. There were many more shops along the streets here, but still not much for tourists to bring home, much more for the locals to buy necessities for their own needs. Because of the poor road conditions, our bus trip to the military site Xeo Quyt, was cancelled. Again, lunch on board the boat and air conditioned ... read more

Today we took a small local boat through narrow channels to several scenic locations, including a small village known as “Evergreen Island," where we walked around the island and met many of the island's inhabitants, who were very happy to show us around. One woman let us into her home to see how they live so simply, MY kids would die. They would move to the city and never come back. That is for sure! Tan Chau known for it's ancient silk factory. Since most of the silk production has moved north into China for many reasons, this is one of the few working factories left in Vietnam. Saturday, the workers were off today, but we walked through the factory and learned that each person (mostly women) runs several machines at once, only needing to touch ... read more

Today we made our border crossing to Vietnam. The customs officers came aboard and cleared everyone by our passports that were left at the pursers office when boarding. My day was spent onboard the boat, mostly cruising the Mekong, watching the world of the river dwellers. I sat on the upper deck reading by the pool, taking the cool plunge when it got too hot. Whew that felt good! There was a cooking demonstration, an ice cream social, mixology class, none of which I attended. I needed to decompress after all the long days of touring. The boat moored off Tan Chau, a small city with a lot going on. We could hear lively music going on from the shore at night.... read more

The next day we woke and went to get some photos of the cave in daylight before having breakfast. We then went to a place called Titop beach and climbed a few hundred steps to a viewing platform. From there we got a spectacular view of some of the islands of Ha Long Bay. We then went for swim in the sea before going to the boat to sail back at Ha Long City. We left the boat and we were quite sad it was over. Before going we got a photo of some of the crew members and then transferred back to Hanoi by private car. When we got back to Hanoi we were all quite tired so went out for tea and a few drinks and then went back the hotel and got an ... read more

We were supposed to wake early and take part in Thai Chi demonstration but as I'd got to bed late we missed the time so we had a nice cooked breakfast, strong coffee and headed to a cave. The cave featured many rocks that looked to be in the shape of certain things e.g. King Kong, a turtle and other things. We explored the cave and the Vietnamese people found us quite fascinating... Especially the Louise and Corinne. After that we boarded the boat and headed for the Pearl Farm. It was interesting to learn how pearls are produced. The peals are implanted into an oyster and left for a period of months or years to so that the contents of the oyster cover the pearl. What starts out as a plain white ball ends up ... read more

Sat 12th - The car collected us to take us to Halong Bay to board the boat. This is the trip that I have spent the last 6 months researching and planning as a surprise. I knew exactly what was to happen but Louise or Corrine didn't and there was an extra surprise for Louise to come at a certain point of the trip. It took us 3.5 hours to get to Halong Bay as I'd arranged us a Private car :) rather than the bus with everyone else. We then boarded a small boat and Louise was totally clueless about what our boat would look like. As we boarded the bigger boat we were all surprised as we were greeted by our man in a mask banging a traditional drum as a welcome. We were ... read more

I can't believe that it has been a week now since I actually left home to come on my travels. And already I have experienced soo much. We had booked a tour to go to the Cao Dai Temples and the Chu Chi Tunnels. It was such a long drive up to the temple on a bus where we really wanted to get sleep on as we had only had 3 hours sleep the night before. But as I have come to realise over here in Vietnam, they like those horns on their cars. They are forever beeping them, apparently it is to get people to move out the way if they want to get past... but gosh it's annoying after a while, so that was waking me up and then I woke up to our ... read more
