Welcome back to Phu Quoc Island. We have been here for some time now and have had some fun and some not so fun. I will talk about the fun since we can always regail people with not so fun stories if they desire. I am now officially an open water scuba diver after 4 dives aboard the SS. Rainbow Divers boat. Got to see all kinds of neat critters under the water like blue speckled moray eels and nudibranches. Caroline got to join me on my last dive and since my instructor and I felt she was missing out from all my skill testing and lessons we decided we would leave the 50 m surface swim with compass skill until the end so she could enjoy it as well. Well when we popped up around ... read more

Hey, me again. Got some really fast internet here on Phu Quoc - surprising since it is a small island, maybe less computers to compete with bandwith. Got to Phu Quoc yesterday. Staying at a fancy resort (Saigon Phu-Quoc), which is quite nice but we could have gotten way cheaper. Oh well, we can't be bothered with the touts anymore choosing a place. It is so different than Mexico because it is so quiet, there are usually only 5-6 people around the pool at a time. The beach is nice, the water is ok, not like Phuket which is crystal clear, but it is okay (hope I don't sound spoiled...) Ken and I are trying to find the positives to this country in general. Maybe we have just run into the wrong circumstances but we find ... read more

On 20th December we left Phnom Penh in Cambodia and travelled by boat down the mighty Mekong to cross the border into Vietnam. We decided to book a 3 day tour into the Mekong Delta in South Vietnam. The border crossing was a gentle, orderly and attractive introduction to Vietnam, contrary to most overland border crossings which usually stress and confuse. Our first meal was noodles and vegetables in a hut next to the Immigration Office with some overly-excitable children trying to flog us packets of crisps. There was an amazing array of herbs thrown in with the veg. The Mekong Delta is where the river fans out, eventually to meet the sea having travelled like a modern-day tourist through Tibet, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It gives life to so many people and is ... read more

From HCM we went on a two day one night trip around the Mekong. Massive river, pretty dirty crazy way of life. Saw coconut sweet, rice paper and rice noodle factories. Stayed in a very budget hotel some of our group freaked out but the feral in me felt right at home. Whole two day trip only US$15, and we had an English speaking guide called Tony (Te-wan), he was great, definitely a highlight of the trip so far!! We then swapped the Mekong for a kind of resort on the coast called Muine - surreal landscape, heaps of red sand like the Oz desert and then massive white sand dunes. Very hot, got pretty bad sunburn - I thought my Kiwi skin could handle it - we've got less ozone than them, but seems I ... read more
