Getting to Phu Quoc was a challenge, I was transferred from one bus to another and another and really had no idea.... I had to once again trust that I would arrive at my destination as no one spoke english and I was the only tourist on the bus...I had a little guardian angel, a local man who sat next to me and attempted to communicate with gestures that I couldn't understand...one of them was sniffing my hand.....umm yeah I eventually figured it out and all he wanted was to help me. After an exhausting bus ride I was dropped off near the port to get the boat to the island which was another experience to say the least, the "super Dong" which was the fast boat (umm not) wasn't so bad, finally I arrived on ... read more

So we left Chau Doc and headed southwest to "beach town" of Hon Chong, when they say beach, they mean, one beach. Oh and its as hard as a rock from all the cement factories near by. But it was beautiful country, giant limestone rock formations jutted out of the flat rice fields like, well i dont know what like but it was cool. Hon Chong was small with 1 very nice resort, that we did not stay at, haha, but we did head over there to get a full blown message, Steam Bath, Sauna, Whirlpool, Shower, Message. For about $4.50. I dont think you can beat that! Also there was a cool Pagoda built inside a cave, the ocean hitting the limestone rocks makes caves all along the ocean here. The next day we headed ... read more

In my last report i forgot to mention the fortune teller that came over to Xuan's familys house and read my future. There where about 12 people in the room and im sure all of them know my future better then me. Let me explain. He looked at me, looked at my hands and then commenced talking for about 10min, then Xuan would look at me and said "28 is good age to get married", then he would talk for another 10min or so, pointing at his heart and the sky and waving his hands, then Xuan would look at me and say "next year will not be so good for you", this went on for about 40 min or so. Some how i think there was something lost in the translation. He did mention that ... read more

Hello, I made it safe. The fligth was long but not too bad. My friend Xuan met me at the Airport and she quickly got me to a hotel. We left early this morning and caught a bus south to My Tho. The bus ride was some experience, a guy hung out the door the whole time and yelled at everyoen on the street, stoping occasionally to "help" some one abourd. It was fun, to say the least. Then we went to her family's house where i met her grandmom, mom and brother, none of which spoke english, but we made the best of it and Xuan translated for us all. Then i took a little nap after which i went back to Xuan's house were her mom made a fantastic vegetarain meal, she made a ... read more

I decided to book a tour of the Mekong Delta. I woke up early and walked to Delta Adventure Tours, and met up with the rest of the people. We took a bus out to the Mekong, and then boarded a boat. We visited various places, and got back to Saigon pretty late. I met up with Hong, and we went to a bar for a few drinks.... read more

This was also a full day, and I had to say au revoir to the French couple I made friends with. They were a lot of fun to travel and talk with. Ingrid has been doing an internship in Phnom Penh but they have to go back to France this weekend. Thursday we toured the canals more and saw a "Monkey Bridge for the first time. They're the traditional bridges that people use to link islands together, but the government is trying to replace all of them with ugly cement bridges. They're very narrow and I suppose not used much since everybody does everything by boat there. A monkey bridge is basically Xs of crossed bamboo across the canal with narrow logs laid in the bottom of the top half of the X. Along on of ... read more

I ventured out of the city for a two day tour of the delta, and I have to say it was wonderful. I was almost sorry for it to end, but I was so exausted I needed the break. Those tours pack in a lot in a very short amount of time. In the morning i got on a bus with a bunch of other tourists and we drove out onto the delta. They put us on little motor boats: long traditional wooden boats and we started down the river. After several turns off the main waterway we were moved onto little, narrower wooden boats. Each boat was paddled by two women, one in the bow and another in the stern, almost like a canoe. We visited four islands, each named for an animal: Turtle, Dragon, ... read more

Mekong Delta After 3 days in Saigon, it was time to move on. We wanted to see Angkor, and we also wanted to spend at least 2 full weeks relaxing on Koh Samui in Thailand, being lazy tourists for a change. Our plan was to get to Phnom Penh, have a quick look around, and head for Siem Reap - the city closest to Angkor, and then down to Bangkok and on to Koh Samui in the south... ...Happy Guesthouse turned out to be the exact opposite of what the 3rd guide said it would be. It was on a pleasant lake, with beautiful houses, very friendly staff, good food, and in an area with many other choices for backpackers... this is our third day on the boat tour. terribly rushed. we arrived at the pagoda and left about 1/2 later. a rushed tour through the pagoda, a breath-taking view of the rice fields leading to cambodian border, and then a run-walk down the steps in order to meet the next tour boat that was awaiting a transfer. we rushed to then travel 4 hours by boat and 4 hours by bus back to saigon. the third day was not so well-planned...it would have been worth it if we had more time to sit still at the pagoda...but it was not meant to be. nice shot though.... read more

no denying my asian routes here. a postcard image of me in a RED dress and the rice patty hat on the floating market. our tour boat anchored along-side another boat that was buying pineapples from a farmer that was selling. we jumped on board their boat and watched them slice a pineapple for our soon to be succulent enjoyment! ... read more
