Angkor was our last stop in Cambodia. From there we stopped in at Phnom Penh for a night and then it was back on the Mekong River and south to Vietnam. We decided to spend a few days in the Delta area before Saigon. Although we'd seen quite a lot of the Mekong in the last few weeks this area had a whole different feel to it. A lot more money in Vietnam thats for sure, loads more people and infrastructure. We spent our time split between the border town of Chou Doc and the nearby town Can Tho. In Can tho we took an early morning boat ride out to the floating markets. This started as strange day out due our "captian". The previous day we had been walking around the town just checking the ... read more

Got up early, checked out of My My and walked to Sinh Café to get the bus for the Mekong Delta. First stop was Cai Be. Then we stopped to see coconut candy making. Next, rice paper (spring roll wrapper) making. Then popped rice making. Back in the boat, but the tide was low (on top of being dry season), so the boat started to hit the bottom. First everyone had to move to the front of the boat, but when that didn’t help, everyone had to get out. We walked a couple kilometers along the canal to the place we had lunch. After lunch, we saw a traditional Vietnamese music performance (basically, the family that owned the restaurant played and sang for us). Got the ferry to Can Tho (biggest city in the Mekong Delta) ... read more

Today we did a day trip along the Mekong Delta to give us a glimpse into the way in which this region affects the lives of the Vietnamese People. A very green region, we also learnt that it is the silt in the riverbed which provides the much needed minerals for the cultivation of rice, fruit and other food products and gives the water it's muddy colour. We passed the four major islands of the Ben Tre district: Dragon (virility), Phoenix (femininity), Tortise (longevity) and Unicorn (luck). First stop was a coconut product making "factory". Whilst basically a cottage industry and obviously very tourist oriented it was interesting and the coconut lollies very addictive (my tummy aches...). Next up we visited an apiary where we had delicious tea with lots of honey and lime, it was ... read more

First of all, I would like to say that I feel i haven't really been able to farewell Cambodia properly, and in a way, I wish I were returning home, so that I could digest all the wonderful things I have experienced so far. We ventured into Vietnam today via boat(s), and the trip was so overwhelming in a sensory way, that I failed to find the quiet time to just think about everything I experienced in Cambodia. Since my last blog (to which I haven't been able to read the comments, as the internet provider in Chao Doc is barring me from the page as it contains pornography????? Karla?!) and our exit from Kampuchea, I have tried to think of ways in which to help this country, which still ranks amongst the 10 poorest in ... read more

So, we arrived in Chau Doc, Vietnam today, from Cambodia. OUr journey was all of 5 hours on a boat that seated about 16-26 people. It was HOT! but manageable. Our arrival at the immigration port was greeted by some very aggressive children who offered everything from massages, to food items, to baggage handling, etc. It was something to see, they moved so quickly from one offer to the next, particularly if the first offer was greeted with resistance. So, for example, if we refused to buy the food, then your shoulders immediately got the pleasure of being massaged...and so forth and so on...until finally, they get the message--NO THANK YOU! Our backpacks were so heavy and we received no help to disembark the boat--oh yes, there was help from the kids, no more than 10-13 ... read more

Absolutely Beautiful! Another amazing first impression of a new country. We bussed back to Phnom Penh to catch a boat into Vietnam. The region where we are starting our time here is called the Mekong Delta. It is located West of Saigon in the South of the country. It is where most of the rice in Vietnam is produced because of flat and fertile land. Vietnam is one of the worlds largest prodicers of rice. The scenery was green hills along the Mekong which quickly turned into flat rice fields lined with fishermen and floating villages. Vietnam is a busy, busy place, to put it midly! Off the boat in Chau Doc we were confronted with a packed waterfront. So many Vietnamese lined up putting bikes, motos, groceries, and kids onto and off of boats. Meanwhile ... read more

So crossing the border from Cambodia to Vietnam via Tinh Bien proved to be a slight challenge but we made it. First thing to understand is that this border crossing is the newest and apparently was only recently opened to foreigners due to the fact that the area is not the most secure, in that the road cuts through rice paddies where on one side it is Cambodia and on the other Vietnam. For a time they had problems with people sneaking over. Or so the story goes. Still these days very few westerners go this way, we certainly saw none while we were there, nor in the small border town of Tihn Bien. CROSSING FROM CAMBODIA TO VIETNAM VIA TINH BIEN Even though it's open to foreigners now, most take the other crossing, leaving from ... read more

The Mighty Mekong River, one of the largest rivers in the world, snakes it way through South Vietnam in the form of nine tributaries, known as the "Nine Dragons." Dena and I signed up for a 3-day tour which would bring us from Saigon by bus 3 hours to the first big, industrious city in the Delta. From there, it was all boats of one kind or another getting into smaller and smaller channels until finally we were squeezing our rowboats past children swimming. It was exactly what I wanted to see in Vietnam and had I left without seeing this, I would've been disappointed and felt my trip incomplete. We slept in very basic hotels on land in the major cities throughout the Delta. Our tour was cheap - $30 for 3 days, everything included ... read more

OK we made it off the beach and are now in Vietnam trying to figure out the curency, where to go, what the custums are and all the other confusing things that go along with visiting a country for the first time.... OFF THE BEACH Leaving Khins shack was hard...well not for me, but more for Leigh, they coaxed us into staying one more night, but I was determend to leave the next day...having your bed room 20 meters away from beach and water with cheap drinks and good food is a hard thing to get away from...We organized a Share taxi to take us to Kampot for 8 in the morn...the girls all got up early to see us off, made us presents (bookmarks) and we left...
