As you can tell from my previous entry, Easy Riding is the perfect way to get off the Sinh Cafe minibus beaten path. You'll still be on the Easy Rider beaten path, as Duc regularly does this tour and he's been doing it for 11 years, but it is a much better beaten path and you will see The Real Vietnam, as they say. I recommend them wholeheartedly. The only bad part is you will be kicking yourself for all those days you wasted doing the silly touristy things. My advice for Easy Riding: - There are now about 70 legit Easy Riders (who have the official name tags) and countless wannabe Easy Riders around Dalat. BUT- Duc said about 30 of those 70 legit Easy Riders weaseled their way in with lofty connections and do ... read more

Our arrival in Bangkok meant one thing to me….Pad Thai’s all round!!…I was in Thai food heaven, no more Indian curry and hello clean and calm Thailand! We made our way North to Chiang Mai where I persuaded LJ to do a cooking course to ensure an infinite supply of future pad Thaïs. We created a feast of fish cakes, green curry and pad Thai and left full and happy campers. From there we crossed the border into Laos to do some serious banana smoothie tasting and began an epic 150km bus ride on some of the worst roads in the world. With no leg room and chickens all around us the 12 hour journey was enough to help us forget our concerns about Bird Flu! Luckily for us there were 7 other westerners on the ... read more

Vietnam is beautiful. I got on a boat on the Cambodian side of the Mekong. I never knew it was so wide, it looks different in Apocalypse Now! (Maybe cause it was shot in the Phillipines...) After we entered Vietnam, the river began to split up into smaller streams, and we went down one of them in order to get to the day's destination, Chau Doc. Now, a trip on this river really challenges your senses, there is soo much to see. Busy people are everywhere, kids bathe in the water waving and screaming hello, fishermen pull out their nets and throw them back in, boats fully loaded with all kinds of goods from bricks and stoves to rice and watermelons float by. The houses on the riverfront are usually very basic shacks standing on stilts, ... read more

As anyone can tell, I haven't been feeling like blogging much lately. Loads has happened but I will be forced to cram it all into this one. The last entry left off in Bangkok, where I spent another week with my local friends and visited some more temples, including the ancient capital of Ayutthaya. For a week-end Au and I went down to Koh Samet, an island not too far from Bangkok, where we made a complete back-flip on a motorbike. Only very good drivers can do that. There I met Kyo, also from Bangkok, who took me out around town during the following week. She also showed me her university and her former high-school. Then I left to Cambodia. First stop was Siem Reap to check out the gigantic (in size and number) temples of ... read more

I had the most ridiculous day today, too drunk to write about it fully right now. I spent 5 hour s on the Mekong Delta going form floating market to snake wine drinking places. My boat driver, Lal, (who i think kinda likes me) invited me back to dinner at her place. Well it was wild, the whole fam was there and they were so happy to have me. This one guy, han, was obsessed with getting me plastered. He had this banana whiskey which was so potent and this massive tub of beer. I don't know if it is just these guys, but Vietnamese do not sit back and sip on drinks they simply finish them. It was shot after shot, and chug beer and chug some more beer. It was awesome, I sat down ... read more

OK, so I am walking back home last night and I see this lady offering massages on the side of the street, literally on the side of this one street. Hey why not, it had been a tough day cruising on the Mekong river. So I lay down and she shows me these glass bottles and smiles and I say, "yea sure" Hey you know, When in Rome.... Bad Idea. (Almost as bad as taking that Thai "girl" back to my place in Bangkok!) She had this burning stick which she stuck into these bottles to take all the oxygen out and then proceeded to stick them all over my back. It does not feel that bad, just a hard suction feeling. No biggie. She then starts massaging my legs, arms and head. Really nice. When ... read more

After leaving the beaches of Thailand, we breezed rather quickly through Cambodia. Siem Reap was wonderful- the temples of Angkor were as incredible as we had heard. We'll post some pictures when we get back to the states. After Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia, where we only stayed for a couple of days before taking a bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Vietnam was just amazing- the prices of everything are less than Thailand (which is already inexpensive), and it's not nearly as frequented by tourists, though this is steadily changing. There is much less English spoken and written, and the pace of life in the cities, particularly Saigon and Hanoi, almost makes Bangkok feel quaint. There are literally no traffic laws- millions of scooters fill the streets, and ... read more

Caught an early morning bus south to the Mekong Delta. I was joined by a group of eight others as we boarded a small boat to cruise around the Delta. Our first stop was a floating candy factory where they made sweet puffed rice cakes as well as candies. We continued our journey around the Delta stopping at a small village. Then we boarded two-man boats (I was paired with a girl from South Africa) to visit a floating fishing village (the people's floating homes have fishfarms underneath). Then it was back to a larger boat (about 30 or so people) which took us upriver towards Cambodia. We docked near the border and stayed at a small hotel for the night. The next day, we once again borded the larger boat, went up river where we ... read more

Lindsay - On Tuesday morning we checked out of our new hotel to begin a 3 day tour of the Mekong Delta. The tour was by bus and boat around Cai Be, Cantho, and to Chau Doc before crossing the corder to Cambodia by boat and continuing up the Mekong river until we transferred to Phnom Phen by bus. Unfortunately we were far too polite when trying to get a seat on the bus, so ended up last on the pull down seats which filled the bus aisle, however we continued on to Cai Be and on to a boat to the floating market. The market wasn't floating as such, but was in this case on the river bank, and our guide showed us round the local people making the things to sell on the market. ... read more
