My pickup on Tuesday morning was right on time, at 7.30am. I ordered breakfast at the hotel at 6.30, then waited over half an hour to receive one lonely banana crepe and a cup of Lipton tea. Certainly not worth the wait, but what can I expect for AUD$2.20? Much to my surprise the bus left on time as well, we pulled out of the bus station dead on 8.00am. I am travelling on a small modern bus with Futa Buslines and this 3 hour trip cost me AUD$8.50. Add on the extra half hour wasted when the driver had to return to pick up three passengers left behind at a rest stop, and we arrived in Can Tho at 11.30. I got a moto ride to Mekong-Logis Guesthouse, where I was staying. Again there were ... read more

I'm up early on Sunday morning and have got myself organised with hours to spare. After breakfast I head out for a walk and found myself in D's Books, where I purchased a 2nd hand novel. I left a book at Horizons in Siem Reap for another traveller to enjoy, and will do the same with this one when I'm finished with it. My planned departure is at midday on the Hang Chau Tourist Boat, bound for Chau Doc in Vietnam. The boat leaves from the Port on Sisowath Quay, and the ticket cost me $29. Unfortunately there is only one daily departure, an earlier start would have suited me better, but nothing I can do about that. There is another company called Blue Cruiser who ply this route, but they leave even later, at 1.30pm. ... read more

We arrived in Vietnam after a four hour boat trip down the Mekong to the town of Chau Doc. There had been a slight "mix up" with the boat tickets, as the company had oversold tickets on the boat we were supposed to be on and so decided to put us on a "more expensive" boat. Unfortunately as the "more expensive" boat didn't know it was going to have two extra passengers on board to cater for, there wasn't enough food for us, so Ross had to physically restrain a very hungry Liz from grabbing a sandwich when all the other passengers were served lunch around us. Apart from the lack of food, the journey down the Mekong was a lovely way to cross into Vietnam and delivered us right into the heart of the Mekong ... read more

Early starts, well you know how I love those...but it's such a buzz to wake up and make the most of the day in this amazing country and be able to explore Ito. Two wheels with an awesome group of people. Concentration is always high as we negotiate traffic with unwritten rules as well as THE most excitable kids in the world. If we had a pound for every "hello" we returned then we could all retire! Scenery is magnificent with a few industrial bits thrown in the mix. Tomorrow is another big day with a final bill climb to end the 95km. So some of us have just had massages to prepare the aching legs ready for more experiences. Talking of which, toilets here will not be winning any health and safety prizes any time ... read more

Great flights followed by swarm welcome from Ho Chi Minh city. Traffic is mad in this place but thankfully they are mostly scooters....which generally carry no less than 3 people. Team VC2015 have bikes and are travelling. Great day today, with 47km in the afternoon and a ferry across the Meekong (sp?) delta to boot! GoPro has been a great investment to capture the incidents! Big day tomorrow 95km so time for more of the excellent food and hospitality ?... read more

As with the preparation of any egg it is all about timing. The Vietnamese know. Once the fertilised duck egg is laid it is ready for eating in 15 days. If you leave it 30 the duckling will hatch. The eggs are served hot and hard boiled. Our hosts on the Saigon food tour explained how to eat it. You crack off the top at the pointy end like you do with a chicken egg. You drink the fluid inside which really did not taste of much. A weak soup? You spoon out the yoke to dip in fish sauce. It is smoother than a chicken yolk and better tasting in my opinion (you should know that I have never really liked hard boiled chicken eggs). Next comes the embryo, a bit grey but tasty enough ... read more

This first photo is the last one Fran took before her phone was stolen. It's an add-in. Except for the accident it was a terrific day. We drove about 2 hours south of Saigon to the Mekong Delta. This is a big geographic area covering about 15% of Vietnam. Where we went there were small towns and smaller hamlets; farmers, fishermen and fish growers. We got off the bus at a local market where the girls shopped and Gary and I followed the confusing narrative of the last 2 minutes of the Superbowl. A little further along we stopped and got on a small boat. We motored down the fast flowing muddy river, past jungle covered dikes, fish traps, water hyacinth, and past small vessels docked against the shore. I thought about how dangerous it must ... read more

In January, Fulbrighters took a tour of the Mekong Delta as part of our orientation. We drove about 2 hours outside of HCMC to take a boat for a 30-minute 'cruise' up a small river to the starting point of our 7 kilometer bicycle tour along shady back roads over tiny canals, past fruit gardens and sleepy villages. Mid-morning we arrived a a family-run orchard where diverse tropical fruits were grown. We were welcomed by our local host, a gentleman of many talents. He and his family welcomed our group on a trip to the Mekong Delta - The owner who was a former war veteran, welcomed us with tea and then led us through a labyrinth of narrow canals in the back waters of the river to a spot where we tasted a delightful array ... read more
