On the ferry from Phu Quoc Island to Rach Gia I encountered the endearing way that time is told in Vietnam. I asked the girl checking the tickets what time the ferry would get to Rach Gia and she said "three hours and forty-five" which I took to be the length of the trip. I thought that we would therefore be arriving at 4.30pm. Instead what she was saying was that the arrival time would be 3.45pm. If you see a time written down on a schedule this would be written as "3H45" (or, more usually in the case for pm, "15H45"). Something I really like about Vietnam (and this has nothing to do with anything before or after this paragraph), every hotel or guesthouse, no matter how cheap it is, will always have free soap, ... read more

The Cambodian-Vietnam border is a funny little place, not like any other border crossing I have done before. I was going to do my usual solo-crossing, which would mean a motorbike or tuktuk from Kep to the border, then a motorbike from there to the Vietnamese town of Ha Tien, and then the ferry across to Phu Quoc Island (primarily to visit the Vinpearl Safari). But there is a tourist mini-van which does the same route, with the ferry included, for US$18 which is probably cheaper than doing it by myself (the ferry is US$10 alone). So I took that option. The leaving time was supposed to be 10.30am but was, naturally, quite a bit later. It didn't really matter because the ferry wasn't until 1.30pm. Normally at a border crossing you have to take your ... read more

The Mekong is Asia’s international river, starting in Tibet and flowing through China’s Yunnan province, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia before it gets to Vietnam. Issues of water conservation and environmental impacts of dams are the same here as on the Rio Grande or Colorado in the States. South of Saigon (or Ho Chi Minh City or HCMC), the river breaks into a delta, much like the Mississippi. We traveled on a teak boat south from the town of Cai Be to Ha Tien on the west coast of Vietnam, which borders the Gulf of Thailand. A working river, the Mekong carries everything from huge barges to tourist boats to small boats and canoes carrying produce, fish or people . We boarded one day and floated overnight, then transferred to a car to drive across “dancing ... read more

A bonus of Global Village Trips, is the great excuse to extend my travel and visit a nearby area that I may have otherwise not seen. This trip was no exception. Me and two of my teammates decided to extend our trip and do what we nicknamed the “Survey Tour of Vietnam”. There were many options to explore nearby in Southeast Asia. We choose Vietnam because it was doable in the short amount of time we set aside, reasonably priced and we had heard so many good things. I wasn’t disappointed! I traveled with Rick and Delores, fellow board members from Habitat Wake. I had two things that were musts on my Vietnam list; doing a float trip on the Mekong Delta and cruising Ha Long Bay. We used both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi ... read more

Normally I'm not one to book guided tours but the options of 1,2 or 3 day tours exploring the Mekong delta seemed to be the only feasible way of doing it. I chose the 2 day, 1 night tour that included an overnight in a local rural village homestay and that ended up costing me $30 with three meals and all transportation. There ended up being about 15 tourists on our bus. Not my cup of tea but there was definitely some value in taking a guided tour. The ride from Ho Chi Minh to our first stop, a little seaside town that I can't recall the name for took about 2 hours. We checked out a Buddhist pagoda with three very large Buddhas of different stances. I learned a few things about what the different ... read more

Vietnam - we arrived in Vietnam after a long sleeper bus from Laos. We didn't know sleeper buses existed up until that point and after 27hours in a horizontal position we wish they didn't! To top this travelling off we both overdosed a little on sleeping tablets which did not do what they were supposed to and left us spaced out and groggy. I also decided my phone would be much happier without me and left it on the bus for it to travel back to Laos. I hope it's happy there! Once in Vietnam we got hounded by taxi men to take us into the centre. We wanted to start walking and hail one down as they turn out to be a lot cheaper but an American pair had asked to share a taxi with ... read more

I’m not very good at keeping secrets. Case in point, I was visiting my friend in the city of Phnom Penh when she told me about this obscure little island off the Cambodian coast owned by the Vietnamese. I realize now she may have accidentally volunteered this info after becoming fed up listening to me moan on about returning to soggy Canada. “Mate! Phu Quoc is what Thailand was thirty years ago!!” Her brown eyes explode as she oversold it with a classic Australian twang. I whip out my phone so I can immediately Google a beach hut and alarm quickly crosses Sarah’s face. “Aw mate, you can’t tell anyone else about it, ok. We expats want to keep it all to ourselves.” I'm like. "What, are you doing the sequel to the movie The Beach ... read more

Puis direction ... read more
