We booked a 5 day cycling tour across the Mekong Delta thinking it wouldn't be too challenging being relatively flat and a short-ish duration; originally there was talk of a 9 day Mountain ride (yipes) or an 11 day Mekong to Angkor Wat cycle (double yipes). My spouse and I both did some cycling fitness training for this and although not a strenuous pace or terrain it was challenging enough with jet lag; change in food and the heat and humidity and my bicycle sore butt. We were picked up at our hotel in Saigon by the cycling glide with a van for 2 couples; cycling guide, van driver, luggage and bicycles and driven into the Mekong countryside; relieved to be out City and Saigon traffic, to a rural 2 lane paved road; fitted the bikes ... read more

It was pitch black and starry when we walked to the jetty on the river at the front of the homestay. A boat was to carry us to the floating markets on the Mekong River, and as always, markets start super early in the day, so I'd been up since 4am. Quite a few locals causally passed us in their boats, carrying wares such as melons, vegetables and fish. One boat was full of live geese which appeared to be loose and enjoying the ride, but I'm sure the reality of it is rather different. Fishermen/women were also abundant. Daylight eventually decided to put in an appearance as we arrived at a small floating market called Phong Diem. The men and women were busy working and mostly ignored us, passing goods from one boat to the ... read more

If you're due to get up at 4.30am anyway and you're in a baking hot room with no fan or air con what you REALLY don't want is someone's alarm going off at 3.30. When that person doesn't appear to know how to turn it off and it keeps going off, patience can wear a little thin. Especially if there are some puppies whining all night as well. Oh and I've just remembered, early in the night something had been pulling the mosquito net tight from under the bed....I don't know what and don't really want to guess.... So we were up earlier than we should have been but we were soon on a trip on a boat down river to a floating market. The trip began in darkness but some fantastic photo opportunities soon became ... read more

Cycling in the dark with only reflectors is never clever. Doing it in Vietnam amongst mopeds, motorbikes, vans, all going in random directions is insanity. Add to that following a young guide who, it turns out 'doesn't know the law' and tries to make you turn into the fast moving heavy traffic, that was my nightmare and I'm grateful to still be alive. But what an experience!!! I'd set the alarm for 7am forgetting that it was still set for 5.30 too. Oops! After a solid sleep I was fully awake and the local cockerels were determined to be heard again and again and again. So Glyn and I both got up and took advantage of having the place to almost to ourselves - although there were a few people about sweeping up. I was filming ... read more

When it's pitch black and you wake up and hear a noise but can't tell where it's coming from. It's the middle of the night and you reach out to make sure your sleeping partner is still there and not prowling round the room. And you realise that something is prowling on the roof making scrunchy sounds....and it's only a few feet above your head.... May as well go back to sleep. It's probably only a monkey. Hopefully. And after that we were still up at 6am to go out and take pictures and upload yesterday's blog. Someone had told us how to work the shower so we actually had hot showers before a lovely breakfast of pancakes, baguettes and fruit. And then we were off on a bike ride through groves of fruit growing such ... read more

Day 21 - "Crocodile teeth" floating market, crocodile restaurant, Cham people and Chau Doc I had a rough night last night! Very difficult getting comfortable due to neck and arm pain. Covered the muscles in tiger balm, eventually, fell asleep! It was a 6am start, breakfast, and out, leaving our baggage for the driver to pick up. He will meet with us later. Hoang was already in the breakfast room when we got there. It was a quick breakfast and off on foot, to the dock. We are going to the floating river market. Houng relays another story about yet another strong man, he fought a huge crocodile, hence, this is now called crocodile market. Everything that sells, or that is a need point, has a floating version. The floating petrol station is a strange one ... read more

Day 21 Mekong Up at 5.30am for the floating markets. We had breakfast then walked down to the pier with Huong our guide. Many tourists were waiting for boats, but like yesterday Lesley and i had a private boat to ourselves! Houng continued with the colourful stories of tigers, crocodiles and legends. We sailed for about 30 mins to the floating markets. It wasn't what I expected. I'd seen photos of people in little boats selling. All crowded next to each other. These boats were much larger and more spread out. Houng explained that they hang from their mast what they are selling, many were selling pineapples. We moored up further down the river and stopped for tea and more fruit tasting. This time I ate a papaya that I've never had before which was ok, ... read more

Day 20 Another good nights sleep. omelette, bread and watermelon for breakfast. The bus was picking us up for the tour to the Mekong river at 9am. A young girl Huong arrived and said she was our guide. We all got in a car, we thought to take us to the coach.... no, this is a private tour just me and Lesley, Mr Brave our driver and Houng. No wonder it was expensive! 4 star hotel tonight ! Houng provided much information about Vietnam on the way. Politics and the economy seem to be a favourite with tour guides. She explained that if you wish to get to management level within a school, hospital or any government office you had to say you had no religious beliefs. Being a communist party in power if you have ... read more

Day 20 - on the Mekong We had a great idea this morning, to strap my empty backpack into Helens full one, to make travelling easier, she got loaded up, and it worked a treat! We were being picked up at 9am, after breakfast by the tour guide. She was on time with the driver; her name is Hoang. We got into the car, fully expecting to be taken to a bigger bus to join a tour, she looked as us really surprised, explaining that we had booked a private tour! No wonder it was so bloody expensive! But, to be honest, the big tour did not go on a Saturday, which is why we had had difficulty booking it previously! I think we paid about £170 each for 3 days and 2 nights. We have ... read more

Ho Chi Minh City (Part 1) I've heard rumors and stories about Vietnam and it's chaotic cities and was excited to see it for myself in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City which locals refer to equally as Saigon, is the largest city in the country and our gateway to the Mekong Delta and a grand adventure into the unknown. Antoine Wilson, my great friend in Korea and proud NYC native, is my travel companion this time and we were very excited to get underway. I arrived in Vietnam after midnight and sought a reputable cab to take me to Saigon Inn located in the heart of the backpacker district downtown. Pham Ngu Lao is Saigon's answer to Bangkok's Khaosan Road. Though not as crazy and disgusting as it's Thai counterpart, Pham Ngu Lao ... read more
