Got the bus early to Hua Hin which is a bit more expensive in general, its a bit nicer in general and is where the Thai Royal Family come on holiday. As I left the bus I got a lift on a motorcycle taxi as this was my only option. I have never been on a motorcycle/scooter or anything in my life! In Thailand it is the normal mode of transport so I figured I would have to take the plunge sooner or later. Somehow me and my backpack fit on the back of the bike and off we went. I survived and arrived at the lovely Patana Guest House. Located down a small Soi (side street) right near the sea it was an old traditional teak wood house. It was gorgeous and had loads of ... read more

My friend Eva was coming down to Hua Hin from the North Eastern part of Thailand. We decided to meet in Ch’aam. 4 hours North of me this is a popular Thai vacation point. I hop on the bus headed to Bangkok and let the bus driver know where I’m going. Like in most bus rides I also start trying pathetically to speak to my seat mate in Thai. At some point I think I’ve gotten across that I want to be dropped off at the beach at Cha’am and does he know where that will be. “Yes, yes, up ahead,” he says. By the time we are finished with our conversation he has asked for my phone number. I smile and refuse not knowing what else to do. I am looking for signs and seeing ... read more

The first week in Thailand for me was marked by a massive culture shock. Moving from Geneve (a bougie, expensive, clean and well mannered city) to Bangkok (a poor, cheap, polluted and crazy city where no one really speaks English) was a transition I thought I was ready for. I was wrong. Life was not what I expected, it was better. I remember our cab ride from the airport to be one marked by looking at strange sights like street vendors pushing their carts around and tuk-tuks (small motorcycle like taxi's) zipping in and out of traffic. This was nuts. However, before I really even had time to let the prostitution streets of Soy Cowboy and Soy 4, or the open air bars that littered the sidewalks sink in, we were off on another adventure. The ... read more

It's October holidays for most International Schools in Bangkok, and Leslie has a week off too. So we continue our little round of "Discovery Thailand". Not really my first visit to Hua Hin, as the last time I came here was 5 years ago. We did not plan one thing, from 23rd to 25th October, Hua Hin is going to host the 15th Asean Summit, you know, the same one that had to be canceled in April in Pattaya due to heavy demonstrations. This time, the Thai government did not do things half-way...as they have deployed 36,000 security forces in the country for the occasion! And we did end up in the middle of it...tonight, the prime minister of Singapore is sleeping...in our bed! The Sheraton where we stay did host...the media center, but also the ... read more

Dagen i dag starta med ei 3 timers lang busstur. Me sko te Hua Hin. Det va ein varme busstur, men naar me kom fram va det vel verdt det! Hotellet me bor paa her, Sofitel centara grand resort and villas, e et skikkelig luksushotell. I kveld gikk me paa et marked her i Hua Hin. Her spiste me middag paa ein av dei lokale serveringplassene langs gataa. Det va kjempegodt, og kosta oss ikkje meir enn 20 kroner for ... read more

We left Koh Tao early afternoon on a catamaran and arrived in Champon and after a three hour journey and a five hour bus journey we arrived in Hua Hin hot and tired. Luckily we managed to find a guesthouse that was still open and got ourselves a room with yet another hot shower air con and satellite TV for £9 - result!! We were up early and decided to have a sausage and egg mcmuffin (That’s the third Maccy D’s of the trip - Again - Farang!) and set about finding how on earth we get to Kanchanaburi without going to Bangkok. After much sign language and gesticulating we found we could get a local train to Ban Pong (?) and then a bus to Kanchanaburi. It turned out to be the cheapest day in ... read more

Hua Hin, Hua Hin, Hua Hin... Monella tapaa ERITTAIN overi mesta... enka nyt puhu mitenkaan positiivisesta overiydesta. Siinna missa muissa Suomalaisten suosimissa pakettimatkakohteissa paikallinen osaa sanoa "Terve, Terve", osataan Hua Hinissa kertoa myytavan tuotteen olevan "Anttila Hintaa", ravintoloiden ruokalistat ovat suomeksi ja raatalin nayteikkunassa iskulause kuuluu: "Et ole kaynyt Thaimaassa, jos et ole kaynyt talla raatalilla". Uskomaton paikka kertakaikkiaan. Saavuttiin mestoille lauantaina 7.3 yobussilla Krabi Townista. Sunnuntaina lahdettiin aamiaisen jalkeen rantsuun ottamaan vahan aurinkoa. Rannalla tuuli ai... read more

I haven’t been doing one of these blog type things for a while for two reasons. 1) everything has been going well so I’ve not had amusing stories to tell and 2) enjoying myself so much I didn’t want to sit on the internet moaning. It’s so sad but I don’t want your sympathy, that would just make it worse. Well after my last entry, when I was in Ko Samui and it was pissing it down, I checked the weather and headed to Hua Hin. I knew it was very touristy and resort based but it seemed to be hogging all the sun so I headed there anyways. After a first night of wandering the streets at 3am, looking for Liverpools game with Marseille I was ready to leave. There were brothels everywhere and old ... read more

Hua Hin - Paradise City - Clean and Tidy Hua Hin is 2.5 hours by mini-van south of Bangkok. Just catch the BTS Sky train to Victory Monument station and walk down the stairway towards the Century Cinemas and you will find the minivan depot where you can purchase a ticket for 200 baht. The King of Thailand has a Palace in Hua Hin which probably has something to do with why it is one of the cleanest and tidiest cities in the country. There are many foreigners living here with numerous golf clubs and residential estates. The highlight of the visit was a trip to the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and the Phraya Nakhon Cave a 45 minute drive south of Hua Hin. I booked a taxi for 1500 baht for the day ... read more
