We finally made it to Thailand. We went from the Perenthian Islands to the unique city of Kotu Bhoru. We stayed one night there, and then planned to make our way to the Thai border. We had asked along the way and people made it sound very close. When we bought our train ticket, we noticed it said 9 hours! WOW! We hadn't expected that! Then we arrived in a small town and the ferry for Ko Samui was leaving the next morrning, so we had to stay another night in a very small town! Nevertheless, we have arrived in Ko Samui and it is very beautiful. We have definately seen an assortment of cultures so far! It is quite busy here with many shops and people. We plan to stay here for 3 nights and ... read more

We made i down to Bangkok after Chang Mai and did all our final bits of shopping. Then headed on down to Krabi which is lovely. We managhed to stay on a beautiful resort with a pool so have just been chilling out for the past few days. YOu could see wehre the tsunami had hit. There is building going on everywhere. Its very strange lots of empty shells. We have now moved on to ko Phi Phi which is even worse. 8 months on and its still devestated. the beach is ruined and so dirty. Most guesthouses are only just up and running. There are still crushed up houses. It has a really eerie feeling about it. However it is still a lovely place and with lots to do here. We are off on a ... read more

Alas, a break from all that diving. After a week of pure intensive diving, my ears ache slightly as they try to get use to the huge pressures underwater. During one of my dive trips, I befriended a German guy who has a dry sense of humour and a ready laugh. He revealed that his grandfather was a tank officer under Field Marshal Rommel in N.Africa during WW2 and he himself was an ex- infantry Unterofficer (Sergeant) in the german army. We decided that we would rent a 1.3L 4x4 Suzuki jeep and do a Tour de Koh Samui, exploring off roads and if possible, going up the mountains. We did lunch at Tescos and soon were hitting the dirt tracks around Lamai area. We whetted our appetites with paved tracks around Diparavan climbing steep slopes ... read more

I feel so relaxed. have been lazing about on the beach for ages. its so beautiful. I'm quite used to Thailand now which is good. At first the sights and sounds of Bangkok espeicially are quite overwhelming. I leave for Vietnam this afternoon and have booked the plane for Xiamen, China after that. I love the shopping here but i've got so much junk now i can barely carry it. deciding to post some junk home was the obvious choice, unfortunately once i got to the post office yesterday it was closeing and i was assured it would be open 9-12 the next day. on my return appearing carrying four bags full of junk through bangkok they were closed! The thai people outside must have thought i was mad. Sweating and angriliy gesturing at the closed ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Lak July 26th 2005

Today I sit here at my laptop in beautiful Palo Alto, California. Just blocks away is Stanford University and criss-crossing in front of me are the visions of wealth and pretentiousness. In a few weeks I'll be boarding yet another airliner to hover across this vast globe to a little known area of Thailand named Khao Lak (ka-oh lack). I am returning to this tsunami-torn region not to engage in the multitude of adventures available to the average tourist, but to begin another round of rebuilding the communities lost in the wave. This time, however, I have come with a specific mission in mind: Playgrounds. After returning from my last trip in January, just weeks after the tsunami, I founded Operation Playground and have been able to raise money through private funding to build playgrounds for ... read more

Today marks the beginning of my dive adventure as I board the MV WaveRunner to my very first dive site, Sail Rock. When Steve told me that the WaveRunner had 3 decks, I mentally pictured a high tech advanced catamaran that could cut through waves like butter, but when I finally laid eyes on it after a 1 hour bus ride to the pier, it was nothing more than a 3-tiered big fishing boat. Always having to combat motion sickness problems, I put all sorts of pre-admonitions aside and looked forward to my dive. I had completely no idea that the boat ride to the Sail Rock would take a whopping 2.5 hours! The sea around the gulf of Thailand was very choppy. By the time I reached the site, I no longer entertained romantic notions ... read more

To those who are faithful followers of my travel blogs, I wish to apologise for the lack of any new entries in the past 1.5 weeks, all I can say is that I had a real busy time and was really hard pressed to find the time to take written notes of what had happened. To those who are interested, this was what happened…… I had been boxing for almost 3 weeks and am glad to have seen progress in my fitness and techniques, however there is burning feeling to do something more, do expand my experience in Samui and not just limit it to boxing, no matter how much I love it. I’ve always been curious to try diving and while talking to a fellow boxer from Sweden, the way he described diving was just ... read more

hehe, ok this one needs a bit of a photojournal- if you haven'yt figured it out yet, to see all of the photos you have to first click on the one below and then click the link above it that says 'previous'. i'm not sure i like the photo system on this site... it's confusing. Anyway, I've been riding a motorbike around for the last two days and I'm thoroughly addicted!! It's the ONLY way to travel! (and on $1 for a tank of fuel, the cheapest!) I found wome waterfall today in the jungle and went up to the top of it where there was a viewpoint over the whole island. It was nice. I read my book for a while and then bathed in the crystal waters :P Having a "Bungalow Warming" tonight. I've ... read more

Left Phi Phi on Sunday (sunday? i think so... what day is it now? is this a weekday?) ...anyway, I'm now on Ko Pha Ngan, which is about 300k's or so north east and on the other side of Thailand- above Ko Samui. It's very much the party island (just in case I didn't already get my fill on Phi Phi!! AGH!) but I've been having a bit of a chill for a couple of days. I'm staying in a small bamboo bungalow ON the beach, with a hammock and... coconuts... and... not much else. oh, it has a light. luxury! it is BRILLIANT! I may just rent it for the rest of my life, as it only costs 50B a night- which is equivalent to about $1.60 or something... I'm trying to get my old ... read more
