Hi Mum I'm soooooooo looking forward to my holiday, two days to go.....snowing in chch this week so 30+ in swing'n singapore & thailand will be good. The guy at flight centre gave me a swag of duty free vouchers, he indicated that i may need a bit more than 'other' passengers. The cheek. My symphathies lie with Gary (boss) as to be fair, my productivity has suffered this week. Never mind, all that is required is done... Strict instrictions have been issued for me to get a suit whilst over there, apparently its as cheap as chips to have one tailor made. I'll be all civilised. Am just about ready to go, the i-Pod is loaded with the disco mix, i have three (rather large) books for the pool lounger and a brand new credit ... read more

Sorry for the infrequent blogs, the electricity/internet capabilities of the islands are limited. I'll also apologize in advance for any strange things said in this entry - post full-moon party debauchery and my head is not yet right. After leaving Chiang Mai we went off to Ayuthaya, a city famous for its ruins (it was the capital of Thailand until the... 13th? century) to geek out a little, considering our academic backgrounds we were pretty excited. However, as a whole, Ayuthaya proved to be a bigger nuisance than anything else. Firstly, our songthaw driver didn't take us to our requested hostel, but rather feigned misunderstanding and delivered us to a guesthouse (P.U.) with the pushiest manager in the history of pushy businesspeople. We were desperate for a bed and a bathroom (both suffering from some stomach ... read more

19/09/2005 Monday 00:15 departure Arrive 06:30 Immigration about 2 minutes. Customs, for 500 jeopardy points what is customs. Pass. Minibus to Hotel. There are stray dogs everywhere. Check in and pay 200 baht for marmalade toast. This will be the most I pay for any food again, I was too tired to enjoy the buffet and egg corner. Meet “John” and “Jane” at the lift, they are retired and on the wrong end of their one month stay. He is a Pom and “Jane” is a Scot but lived in New Zealand for most of their married life as well as the rest of the world. He being transferred a lot in the forces. He is a fervent raconteur and full of wisdom as I will later find. “Jane” is really nice when she gets ... read more

We arrived on Ko Pha-Ngan the following morning after too many sleep deprived nights, found a place to stay and slept for 4 hours. We had a shower, ate, went to the 'pirate bar' and then slept again. We spent 5 days, 4 nights on the island but there's only 2 nights worth a mention. The main one is of course the full moon party. The other night was one spent at a bar listening to a band (guitar and toms). The night listening to the band was more of a 'right place at right time' moment. We went for a meal at a restaurant called the 'village Green', owned by a British guy called Ben Green. He's been living on the island for 6 years with his Thai wife and offers two very useful services. ... read more

After the toils of life on the road (and rail) in China and with the transition to Europe looming, what could be a better way to ease myself back to my former life again than spending a couple of weeks recovering my frazzled mind on the beach and invigorating my body on the steep limestone walls of the Tonsai area in southern Thailand... On arrival, the release was instantaneous! In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with good food and a slightly less intensely hot climate, I felt completely at home. And that was still Bangkok! A day later, I was securely vegetated on the beach, a warm wind blowing off the sea swaying the palm fronds overhead, and my batteries well on the recharge... I really enjoyed simple things: food that doesn't scare me, the ability ... read more

Hello everyone. We're finally having a chance to post from Thailand. Our two main excuses for not having done so sooner: 1) difficult to find internet and 2) too lazy. Hey, it's our vacataion. So, I will fill you in on the last week or so. We flew from Auckland, NZ to Bangkok, spent 2 nights there, then flew to Phuket and spent 3 nights there. After that, 2 nights in Khao Sok National Park (bit north of Phuket), and now we are on an island, Koh Pha Ngan which is on the Gulf of Thailand. You should have a look at the Google Earth simulcast to know where these places are. In short, we are in the south of Thailand on the east side of the penisula. Water and Cambodia are to our east, and ... read more

For the last four weeks I have been on the island of Ko Phi Phi, off the Thailand Andaman Coast, the island is building a memorial garden for the victims of the tsunami and the project needs to be finished in time for the one year anniversary. I went along with the intention to volunteer for a couple of days during my time on the island, which was orignially only meant to be a week but really enjoyed the work that the garden was doing and wanted to try and help in any small way I could. So I ended up doing three weeks volunteer work in total with a visa run to Malaysia in between! Phi Phi basically looks like two islands connected by a bridge of land a few metres long, either side of ... read more
