Is that really the time? No update since the 27th August? To those who care (yes, both of you), I am sorry. What you must realise is that when one is stuck on a beach in the Gulf of Thailand, one just doesn't have the time to update these blog things. Anyway, here we are. Maenam beach, northern Ko Samui. We are staying at a lovely place, right on the beach (I can hear the waves gently lapping the shore, in time with the tap tap tap of the keyboard). It's very calm, with a view of Ko Phangan in the distance. We've been here for almost two weeks, but on Sunday we leave for Had Yai and from there Malaysia. Yes, Thailand is almost over and another country awaits. Now would be a good juncture ... read more

Last time we wrote we were in Ko Samui debating whether to head off to Krabi and Ko Phi Phi or to go via Trang to some of the other islands on the south west coast. After leaving the internet cafe we headed back to the resort to watch the final Tri Nations rugby match and bumped into another South African couple traveling from London. They had just arrived from Bangkok. After some discussion we realised that Sarah and Gareth are very good friends of Keith's brother, Craig. We enjoyed a good evening of cocktails on the beach and swapped info. We hope to meet up with them in Sydney for New Year. We finally decided to head to the south west and endured a day of travel via boat, bus and taxi in to Trang, ... read more

Today I did my first open water dive as part of the scuba course. It is a totally new feeling breathing under water. I am really glad I did it and have 2 more dives tomorrow to finish my certification. I think I will go for a couple dives when I am in Bali a few weeks too. It is fun but not something I will get hooked on. I guess I am just a speed freak and am really looking forward to the two wheeled adventures in Cambodia next week. I won't have any internet access on that trip so I'll have to tell you about it latter. I hope I won't regret not getting the Med-Jet evacuation insurance. I don't think we will be doing anything crazier than I do on the bike in ... read more

We just got back from a weekend trip to Krabi and can confirm that it is paradise. We didn't even make it to the famed Rai Lei Beach and just stayed at the Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort the whole time, where we were perfectly happy. The Sheraton Krabi is located on Klong Muang Beach, about 30 minutes from Krabi airport. The beach is not private, but it may as well have been private given that usually there was only a handful of people on it. Of course, this is the off season, but we still had wonderful weather. The lack of tourism is also being attributed to the Tsunami. Even though Krabi was not much affected by it, tourism there still suffers because many foreigners are still reluctant to travel to Thai beaches. Jim and I ... read more

Hey all, I am in Phuket now and since it is the low season and after the tsunami the area which is usually very touristy is a bit closer to normal. In fact there aren't that many people here and it is a bit of a buyers market, but still expensive for Thailand. Last night I splurged and stayed in a 4 star hotel with pool, waterfall, free buffet breakfast and very nice rooms for 37 USD. Tonight I am staying in an airconditioned room on the beach in a 2 or 3 star place with a great view for 10 usd which is right next to the place I am learning scuba. It isn't near too much, but I am renting a scooter so I can get around for a little less than 4 USD ... read more

We are both feeling very lazy after our hectic schedule in Ko Tao. We now get to sleep-in every morning and don't need to set any alarms for Early morning dive theory sessions. Keith completed his Advanced Open Water certificate and managed to rack up 11 dives in 6 days. Diving Sail Rock and the night dive were the highlights. We were both really sad to leave Ko Tao. It is the kind of place that can suck you in and you soon loose track of time. The island is very westernised and diving centric but has a great feel to it. Our next stop was Ko Pha-Ngan, a 90 minute ferry ride from Ko Tao. We arrived in Thong Sala, the main port, in the midday heat and were not prepared for the bombardment of ... read more

Hat Yuan to Hat Rin, Hat Rin to Thang Sala, Thang Sala to Surret Thani, Surret Thani to Krabi, Krabi to Koh Phi Phi, 2 ferries, 4 buses across a country in 14hours heading from one island backpacker paradise to another - or least that was the plan. After missing two ferries (late night and early morning) an unexpected night in Hat Rin and a late ferry across from Thang Sala to Surret Thani, another unexpected night in Surret Thani in a guest house where the second floor acts as an impromptu gambling den, complete with uniformed cops as part of the party. Buses and then more ferries and finally arriving 72 hours after my intended departure. Phi Phi, hit heavily by the tsunami, but still beautiful, still paradise. The effects of the tsunami are apparent, ... read more

I wasn't sure I wanted to take the time to go to this remote island two hours off the coast of Phuket by boat. I knew it was the island that the movie 'The Beach' was filmed, but had reservations as I knew I would have time later when I returned to Thailand in November. I glad I took the ferry. From a distance you have to remind yourself that you are not looking at a postcard. The water was relatively calm (for an ocean) and the skies were partly cloudy. Many backpackers frequent this remote location for its cheap drinks, food and offshore excursions. The rooms are not that cheap, but everything else makes up for the pricing (deluxe room for $30USD). My room is on the beach, a bungalow with A/C...a must! Most of ... read more

Hello Guys, OK, left Koh Tao which was sad, but the show must go on. So headed to Raliey or Rai Lei, the Thai's dont even know how it's spelt. What chance does a dixlexik bloke have?? Anyways, caught up with Mum on her last few days in Railey which was cool. Such a beautiful place, massive rocks that look like they've forced themselves out of the sea. My mate Elliott from Koh Toa cam down to join us and the rock climbing began. Bloodly wicked. You get such a rush when you climb a 30 meter cliff and look down, very few better feelings!! Stayed there for about 5 nights then Elliott and i have come down to the perhentian lslands in Malaysia. Oh my God, such a sweet looking place. We came here because ... read more
