Saw A Dee Kah from Thailand. It's hard to believe we are beginning our 3rd week on the island. The day is lovely, 31 and sunny with a slight breeze. . . . a perfect day for the beach! Surprisingly, the weather in week two here has consisted of quite a few cloudy days with rain off and on! According to a German friend who has been coming here for 25 years, he has never seen a January so cloudy and rainy!! I guess it is the trend all over the world! However, it doesn't damper our activities. On a cloudy/showery day we often will walk in town to look in the shops and have a leisurely lunch. We have discovered some great little restaurants at the north end of the beach road. Some days we ... read more

After a smooth flight from Penang, we're soon in a taxi hurtling towards the bright lights of Bangkok! The taxi driver speaks very little English, but that doesn't stop him prattling away in Thai and cackling to himself. After roaming around Samsen street for 20 minutes, he finally locates our guesthouse and we jump out. It's about 9pm and we're down a dark alleyway, hoping that we're in the right place. All the buildings seem to be attached to each other with Metal roofs, so it's hard to know where they start and end. We're finally welcomed by our hosts at the guesthouse and shown to a massive double bedroom! For 10 quid, you couldn't ask for much more. Later that night we walk down Samsen street and spot a bustling restaurant down a side alleyway. ... read more

Ahhh........ life at the beach on the island of Ko Samui, Thailand. It doesn't get any better than this (well at least for us)!! It was great to return to one of our favourite islands. The Thai people here are so friendly, kind and happy. Things are much the same as they were two years ago. A few new places and the price of a beer and a Thai meal on the beach has gone up 30 cents to a whopping $3.50 Cnd!! We checked into our new home for the next three weeks - "Bill Resort". The property is on a beautiful and tropical spot on a slope at the south end of Lamai Beach. The familiar Thai shaped and colorful bungalows are scattered throughout the jungle with every tropical plant, tree and flower you ... read more

Kjøpte noen kaker, noe rispudding greier og kokosnøtt is. Ikke alt som smakte like godt som ... read more

Can we get Samui? After diving in the Similan Islands and adventuring around Khao Lak, we were eager to discover southern Thailand’s beauty. People travel from all over the world to take in the splendor of the white sand beaches, crystal waters, and spectacular scenery of the places we have visited. We are constantly humbled by this experience. We feel so lucky that we are able to spend this time together as a young couple and explore a part of the world that has so much to offer yet is so accessible. We continually plan our future adventures while trying to appreciate and enjoy every step of the way. That being said, we left Khao Lak with ample suggestions of places to go and things to do, and in the taxi on the way to the ... read more

We'd just sat down with drinks at the table when there was a sharp crack - crack sound nearby. The young man on the scooter now lay motionless slumped on the ground in a distorted heap. Still straddling his fallen bike but now with blood pumping from a hole in his left cheek and another in the back of his head. Eyes closed and a blank expression on his face, nothing could be done to help him. He was very dead. With the Claret Of Life running into the gutter being slowly diluted by the constant heavy rainfall, his assailants melded into the growing crowd of stunned onlookers. All this going on at eight thirty on a Thursday evening in an otherwise peaceful out of the way fisherman's village. Before continuing, I need to firstly rewind ... read more

After a great New Year and a few days of sun we left Koh Phangan by ferry to go to the nearby island of Koh Samui. We arrived after 30 minutes and jumped in a mini van heading towards Chaweng Beach, the main area and beach on the island, and as we had nowhere booked the driver dropped us off at a resort called Long Beach which he thought may have rooms. The resort itself was on the beach and right in the middle of Chaweng which was great, but the rooms weren’t great and they were more than what we had been paying, so we left our bags there and went to look for somewhere else. After going into at least 5 other places along the beach and finding out that rooms were at least ... read more

No sure how to explain Ko Samui, in particular the Town of Chewang. I am arrived at the tail-end of the holiday season, which means the tourists (pretty much all of Europe by my count) were partying it up one last time. I think the only way to explain it is to just say....youth, drinking, massages, food, great food, rain, beach, lounge chairs, wishing balloons, rave, apple flavored smokers, sensory overload.....Chewang, Ko Samui in a nutshell! I arrived in Ko Samui around 6pm via a flight from Phuket, spent the night, mostly awake wondering. Up at 6am to catch a minibus to the ferry dock on my way to Ko Tao for some hopefully excellent diving.... read more

Ko Samui, Chaweng Beach, December 31st, 2009!! (Ko means island)!! Hello all! We made it to Ko Samui, and it was well worth the trek!! We left Phuktet on the 30th at about 6:30am, and we drove for the ferry dock. It was about a 4 hour drive. The original plan was to cross over on the ferry with our car, but it was a 4 hour wait with the car, or a 20 minute wait without, so we ditched the car. The ferry ride across was about 2 hours, and needless to say it included beautiful views of the sea, and the neighboring islands. We goty to our hotel at 2:00pm, and by about 2:15, we were lounging on the beach. The weather was awesome!! The story with Ko Samui goes something like this: Apparently ... read more

Having managed to get our visa extended we were able to spend our New Year in Thailand so we went about planning a trip to Koh Phagnan for the famous Full Moon Party. Unfortunately every bed and bench on the island was booked out so that put an end to that! Luckily we had a plan B which was to head to Koh Samui (the nearest island to Koh Phagnan) instead for 3 nights and hopefully find some way of getting ourselves to Koh Phagnan for the big new years bash. We left Phuket at 6am and reached Koh Samui about 8pm, with the boat dropping us at Narang Pier where we hopped on to the back of a truck taxi to take us to Chaweng where we were staying. Trying to find our accommodation though ... read more
