Ahhh........ life at the beach on the island of Ko Samui, Thailand. It doesn't get any better than this (well at least for us)!! It was great to return to one of our favourite islands. The Thai people here are so friendly, kind and happy. Things are much the same as they were two years ago. A few new places and the price of a beer and a Thai meal on the beach has gone up 30 cents to a whopping $3.50 Cnd!!
We checked into our new home for the next three weeks - "Bill Resort". The property is on a beautiful and tropical spot on a slope at the south end of Lamai Beach. The familiar Thai shaped and colorful bungalows are scattered throughout the jungle with every tropical plant, tree and flower you can imagine (orchids all over the place)! The cottages have lots of beautiful windows which make them seem quite spacious. Air conditioning, T.V., mini fridge, drinking water, pool, beach towels, WiFi, daily made service and a full breakfast are included in the price of $33 per night! The resort kind of reminds us of a cabin at Waskesiu except in a tropical forest instead
with consistently warm weather, no wind and no mosquitoes!!!
We quickly settled in and established our routine. Time is rather unimportant. The ony thing we have to check is that we are down at the pool by 10:30 before breakfast closes! Some days we have to check the calendar to see what day it is! After breakafast we usually take off on the scooter to site see, pick up supplies or run errands. After that we do our morning beach walk for about an hour and settle in at our favourite beach spot "Mr. Kom's" where we spend the day visiting, swimming, having massages for $6.00, reading, playing dominoes etc. and have lunch.
Some of you will remember the Thai family we met two years ago that work at the beach bar and restaurant that we enjoy. They are still there and were excited to see us again. "Mama and Papa" they called! They upgraded somewhat with new umbrellas, chairs, a massage place and new menus. The food is so good. The older boy "M" (21 yrs) and his girlfriend "A" now have a baby boy "Kong" who is 18 months. What a cutie! The twins now 12
and their brother (15) still work and unfortunately do not attend school due to the fact that the Luc (foster mom) took the boys in a few years ago as their mother is an alcoholic and couldn't look after them. There just isn't enough money for school uniforms and supplies on what they make at the restaurant for all of them. One of the twins and the older boy now work at a jet ski place up the beach to help make ends meet. We brought some pictures of our home and family and of course of Parker to show them. They were very interested in the photo of our house and the snow!! They were particularly excited about Parker as Jenny and Ryan visited with them 2 years ago in May.
Later in the afternoon I do my laps in the pool and then we hang out at our bungalow. Around 7 p.m. we head into town (10 or 15 min walk) for shopping, supper and people watching and back around 11 or later depending if we stay long at one of the "lady bars" or watch the Thai boxing on Saturday nights.
Surprisingly, we have had
two days of rain in our first week! Two years ago we barely saw a drop. It doesn't seem to damper our style too much as we just do different things and it is still always warm. Our bungalow supplies two large umbrellas! Sometimes it will rain for 5 minutes and then clear up. But in general, the local people say there has been much more rain this year than usual.
Thanks for reading our blog. Hope all is well
