Gassing Up Our Big Machine!
Gas sold in 26 oz liquor bottles (40 bhats per litre) but cheaper at the gas station (a little cheaper than home) Saw A Dee Kah from Thailand. It's hard to believe we are beginning our 3rd week on the island. The day is lovely, 31 and sunny with a slight breeze. . . . a perfect day for the beach!
Surprisingly, the weather in week two here has consisted of quite a few cloudy days with rain off and on! According to a German friend who has been coming here for 25 years, he has never seen a January so cloudy and rainy!! I guess it is the trend all over the world! However, it doesn't damper our activities. On a cloudy/showery day we often will walk in town to look in the shops and have a leisurely lunch. We have discovered some great little restaurants at the north end of the beach road. Some days we will sit on our deck and read or play a game until the rain stops. Most cloudy days we still go to the beach as it is just as enjoyable and we don't have to worry about too much sun. It is usually calm and the water is warm. Swimming in the pool is always an option!
We have met lots of interesting
people. At our resort it seems the majority are Germans. (not really the friendliest!) We really enjoy visiting with poeople from Austria, Scotland, Switzerland, Britain, France and especially like the Swedish people. They are very similar to Canadians and we seem to have a natural connection with them. Most Europeans can speak English quite well so it makes chatting very easy. We have encountered very few Americans and Canadians.
One day I took a notion to try out the driving range across the street. Warren came along to observe and laugh! I starated out okay but halfway through something changed! I kept hitting the plastic TEE, it would fly right out of the hole and the ball would pop up and land back on the hole!! Even the Thai girl was laughing! I was considering a round of 9 holes at a very nice course one day but I may have to reconsider. I thought maybe I would be a better golfer in another country!! The heat and humidity is also something else to consider!
You can pretty well get any kind of food on the island. Besides Thai food you can find lots of German and Swedish
dishes, pizza, Indian, fresh salads, spagetti, steak and all kinds of seafood. A new place we found is a Latino restaurant with excellent tacos and burritos. A nice change. We usually eat Thai food on the beach for lunch. For supper, we tend to alternate with the food court one night ($1.50 per meal) and a sit down restaurant for a very nice meal for around $6.00.
We continue to enjoy numerous massages, manicures, foot scrubs and pedicures on the beach. We have a favorite girl (Dwan) that does a massage that is out of this world. She charges only $8.00 for one hour and 15 min. We tip her heavily no doubt which she appreciates.
Speaking of wages, we had a chat with a young Thai lady who works in one of the Italian restaurants. She told us she makes $7000 bhats per month which would be just over $200! She works everyday for 12 days. No days off in high season. She indicated fter paying rent and utilities there is not much left over. We notice that most Europeans do not tip but we just dole out the extra! When you leave a tip of $1.00
that is a lot of money for them.
That's it for this week. Tune in next time for more updates. We are hoping to do some island hopping next week if the weather holds. Take Care
