Ko Samui is like paradise. It’s been a mission to get here, but it’s so worth it. Our night on the sleeper train was a little bit scary because we thought we’d missed our station. Neither of us knew that the time of arrival written on the ticket was in Thai time, not Malay and the Thais are an hour behind Malaysia! The seats get converted into beds at about 8pm and they are actually very comfortable. You get a pillow, blanket, reading light and a curtain for privacy. It’s all goes very quiet by 10pm so me and Terry watched Dumbo, because Terry has wanted to watch it for ages (honest). Surat Thani rail station is 15KM from the city center which is a real pain. Luckily, this is Thailand so within 2 seconds of ... read more

Ko Samui was a bit of chill out time for us both, as you can imagine all this travelling around can make you tired! We were fortunate enough to have been invited to stay with James and Miren who we met diving in Ko Tao, so had the luxury of an air conditioned room (dream!) and the use of their moped while we were there, all for free (thank you again James/Miren for that) Being away for nearly three months by this point you can picture the excitment on both of our faces when we discovered the island has a huge Tesco on it with all the goods we had craved from home, Lurpak butter, cheddar (more cheese), fresh white bread etc. After all the Tesco excitement we had to calm ourselves for some paddle-boarding action. ... read more

Ko Samui We left Bangkok on the Disco Rave Karaoke bus on the Sunday night. We didn't have an allocated seat but were ushered into the VIP section with another couple who were from Egypt, every other bus that passed us had people in that were looking at our VIP section, this caused lots of pointing and I imagine people saying "wow look at that". Unfortunately the space was somewhat limited and sleeping wasn't all that easy (and due to a difference in religious beliefs nor was a drinking and poker night), there was a poker style table in the middle of the room that myself and the Egyptian guy curled ourselves around and then 2 seats that Joff and the lady took. After being dropped at Surat Thani, waiting there an hour, taking another bus ... read more

We arrived at our next destination, Koh Samui, by boat and braced ourselves for the upcoming ritual duel with taxi drivers at the boat dock… the only problem was that instead of encountering the usual throngs of taxi drivers vying for your business, we found the opposite… tumbleweeds and crickets. To be more specific… all the locals on the ferry cleared out and about 15 of us tourists were left in a vacant parking lot… the only people around were about 5 drunk taxi drivers at the back of the lot and they found our predicament borderline hilarious and started quoting outrageous prices for a ride into town. Luckily there was a restaurant open nearby and I walked over to see if we could find a decent ride to Chewang Beach, where we would be staying. ... read more

I was so sad to say goodbye to Koh Phangan as I had such an amazing time, but I was coming back to the island for me and Nat's honeymoon, so it wasn't goodbye for long. Plus now I had something amazing coming up - the wedding!!! I could barely contain my excitement, the day was finally nearly here!!! After saying our goodbyes to Karla (the person that helped run Lighthouse Bungalows) we were on our way to Koh Samui. When we arrived Beckie, Kate and Sam headed off towards Cheweng as they were staying at Jungle Club, high in the jungle above Cheweng and me, Nat and Lisa went in the opposite direction towards Maenam, which was supposed to be a lot more chilled out than Cheweng (no late night venues, no McDonalds etc) and ... read more

It's been a very busy time in Koh Samui so I thought I'd better update everyone before we move onto our next place! Despite the rain in Koh Phangan the crossing was really smooth to Koh Samui. It seemed like a like a lot of backpackers had the same idea as us as the boat was packed. We didn't have anywhere to stay in Samui so we headed to the popular area of Chaweng to find somewhere for a few nights. Andy left me in an ice cream parlour (yay!) with the bags while he went to find us somewhere to stay. The place we did have in mind was full - this is something that keeps happening to us. Andy came back with a room sorted at Best Beach Bungalows. They weren't really bungalows just ... read more

Of course the day we are leaving there is not a cloud in the sky. We went and had some breakfast beside the beach and waited for the taxi to the pier. It was pretty funny seeing everyone after the full moon party. People had paint all over them that they tried to get off but couldn't. A lot of them looked like they hadn't slept at all. There were people passed out on the floor, people with their head in hands etc. Tris and I just laughed, happy we weren't feeling as shitty. The ferry was 30 minutes late, it was on Thai time. Nothing is fast in Thailand, except their driving. We got on the ferry and found a couple seats. Drunk people stumbled by looking for places to sit, but we stayed put ... read more

After flying into Bangkok, we travelled down to the south of Thailand, this time deciding to take an overnight train instead yet another bus journey. We opted for second class, cheap yet cheerful and sufficient for us to pull our seat back and get some sleep. The trains are rather old, the passenger emergency signal still being a long chain that you had to pull. It was an enjoyably different travel experience, seeing the rail side scenery chug by with the night air washing through our carriage, as well as the seemingly constant stream of sellers getting on and off at stations as they pleased to walk the aisles to tempt you into buying there drinks and homemade snacks. After waking in the early morning to get off the train, only to get a local bus, ... read more

Saturday March 12th, 2011 Gulf of Thailand Latitude 4 degrees 38 minutes’ north- Longitude 103 degrees 55 minutes’ east Yesterday we stopped at the resort island of Ko Samui. It is the largest of several developed islands that belong to Thailand. The island was very lush and felt reminiscent of Polynesia. Thousands of coconut palms were everywhere and the island was very green and well watered. Mango, banana and lime trees were growing all along the roads and pathways. We rented a very fancy taxi-van with two other couples from the ship. Our driver said his name was Oz and the van was so plush it was sort of surreal. The inside of the van looked like a disco with mirrored tiles and lights in the ceiling. The seats were all leather bucket style and it ... read more
