The journey to Koh Lanta was relatively simple when you compare it to a couple of the dodgy boat crossings we'd had getting to other Thai islands. Koh Lanta is so close to the mainland that you can get there in a minivan with a couple of very short car ferry crossings. You seem to see the strangest things when on the roads in South East Asia, this time it was a small tomb mounted on the back of a flat bed truck. It seemed to be following us too, slightly unnerving. About half an hour into this journey, the driver got a phone call (not unusual in itself, they are always on the phone!) but this time, he pulled over and came back and knocked on my window, asking me to open it and handed ... read more

The journey from Lipe to Lanta took six hours by boat and mini bus. We changed bus in Trang where we were ushered into a travel agent and told that due to low season we could get a hotel with pool, sea view, air con, mini bar, Wi-Fi and hot shower for the same price as the budget beach hut we had decided on! Our plans changed and it was booked! We arrived quite late had something to eat and went to sleep, without a mozzy net which was bliss! The next day we made most of the hotel enjoying the pool and cushioned sun loungers! If wed each had another book to read we could have done this for longer, but as you know I'm not very good at doing nothing and we were both ... read more

"....on the next leg of the race, families must leave their hotel before it is even light, and make their way by high speed ferry from Koh Samui to the mainland of Thailand at Surathani. They must then take 2 poorly ventilated buses across the mainland to Krabi. En route, the youngest member of the party must find at least one roadside toilet necessitating the bus to stop. When they reach Krabi, they must find THIS man, who will eventually call a minivan to take them on 2 ferries to the Island of Lanta. This will be the pitstop for this leg of the race. The last team to arrive here may be eliminated from the race". It DId feel a little like this...a very long hot travelling day, but we did arrive here on Koh ... read more

Although I was there for a very specific purpose, an English Camp, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the island. We were stationed at the National Park found outside of the “city” and it was simply beautiful. The beach was charming and the rooms set back in the woods, everywhere you turned a new critter was scurrying past you. A group of us were teaching over 100 kids English as well as a respect for the enviornment with programs like a beach clean up and ID this object which could be anything from a shell to a leaf to a seed pod of some sort. It was a really great way to mix the two and for myself it was probably the best English Camp I could be apart of. When we had a bit of ... read more

Well the driver done as promised and dropped us off at some bungalows right by the beach and after some negotiation we had our own hut for 350baht a night for 3nights. The hut was cool as fuck with a hammock, our own brush to sweep my yard and attached shower/bathroom. The bed had a big mozzie net all the way round and a fan aiming straight at the bed. Perfecto. We spent 3days here at Long Beach pretty much on the beach from 10-1pm, a siesta while the sun was at its hottest then back out from 3-5pm before eating and sleeping. It doesnt sound like much but its heaven when you have been on the move for 2months. All the food places on the beach and some a bit further into the jungle done ... read more

So as I mentioned in my last blog, I had planned to spend my last 12 nights on a beach in Thailand to 'recover' from the last 5months of travelling! Having jumped on a flight from Bangkok to Krabi, I took a bus down to the Island of Koh Lanta. Koh Lanta actaully consist of over 70 small islands but for me I stayed on Koh Lanta Yai and headed to Khlong Khong beach in search of my very own bungalow on the beach. For 450Baht a night I soon started to unpack and settle myself into my new home. Unfortunately the weather for the first half of my stay was dominated by monsoon rain and thunder, but thankfully the second half of my time there the weather pulled through for me with 36 Degree sunshine! ... read more

15th March ’12 Bye bye Vietnam, hello Krabi We set off very early for our flight to Bangkok and when we arrived we ended up in a massive queue for immigration, with time ticking down for our next flight on to Krabi. There were 2 queues and somehow we managed to pick the slowest. Then this Russian woman suddenly walked up the middle of the queues, got sent back and promptly pushed in the other queue and then got her mate up to join her. Then to my annoyance they both pushed in higher up our queue (and I thought Russians were used to queuing!), by now it’s obvious she has had a good few nips of the old vodka and she was kind of staggered a bit, glaring at everyone. Funny they picked the slowest ... read more

On January 4th Aoife and I arrived in the island of Koh Lanta. We stayed in a hotel called the Ailf Apartments for around $20 per night. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the beach up a back road in the middle of nowhere. However, they provided us with a motorbike during our stay for free and we were allowed to use the beachside pool in their sister hotel, the Garden Hotel. This was where we spent most of our time in Koh Lanta! Koh Lanta is by far the least developed Thai island that we've been on and there was a very relaxed vibe about the place. It was exactly what we looking for from Thailand. The hotel worked out well with the free motorbike and the use of the swimming pool ... read more

4 books down and Pauls crayons have run out... the challenge begins, the next ones got no pictures!! After 2 buses and a total of 19 hours sat on them we arrived in Phuket (12th February). We went to Patong for the afternoon, our first bit of beach, it was long overdue even if it did remind Paul of Magaluff... definately a tropical island next!! Koh Phi Phi (14th February) was our first island stop. In a word, beautiful!!! It has the bluest seas and the whitest soft sand! Our first day there we went snorkelling and go to go to Maya Bay where The Beach was filmed, it really was gorgeous but so full of tourists! (including us!) We then got taken to Monkey Beach which is a beach only occupied by wild monkeys, they ... read more
