Goodbye Phi Phi, hello Lanta! After a bumpy ride in one of the taxi vans that crams in tourists to the vaious destinations from the ferries, I arrive at Sanctuary No1. A quick enquiry and tail end of low season means they have a bungalow with a sea view just for me for 500 Baht (roughly 10 quid). I later discover I can get a room for 200/300 but I'm glad I treated myself to this as it really was lovely to lie in my hammock watching the waves breaking gently on the rocks and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves. Sometimes I felt as if I was on a boat, the waves were so loud! So. up the sandy path to my quiet idyll, 10 second hop, skip and a jump and i'm ... read more

Hey All, I have found that finding a restaurant around here is extremely difficult. You walk out to the beach, head down the beach and there is many restaurants and bars set up right on the water. You use the beach as a road, and at night they all have cool lights and candles set up to attract you in, and the tables are set up in the sand. Its very cool. You don’t ever have to walk up to the road. After supper last night I walked back and sat in some chairs on the sand between my bungalow and the pool and there were 2 girls from Holland staying in the bungalow down from me. They told me about this day trip they were taking to visit 4 islands the next day. It sounded ... read more

Hey All, As I am writing this my feet are ankle deep in sand and I am watching the tide roll in and the sun will be setting in a few minutes over the Adaman Sea. If you are jealous you should be and if not, then I want to be where you are. So yea, I made it. My new alarm clock passed its first test and had me out front of my guest house at 5:20 this morning and right on time at 5:25 Mr Gao pulled up in this tuktuk and delivered me 20 minutes later at the departure door for domestic flights at Chiang Mai Airport. Flew Bangkok Airways to Bangkok, then 1 ½ layover and flight to Krabi. This time I promise to include the map – lol. The flight to ... read more

After leaving the Uk back in April, we had finally made it into Thailand.....the land of smiles where everyone smiles, it seems that the Thai people are never unhappy and whenever you see them they will give you the bigest smile! They are just the happyest people i have ever met. After our days journey from The Langkawi Islands, we eventually found our hostel......after being droped off at the wrong one (it was dark and not very well lit where we were staying on Lanta and were no signs outside the place we had just been droped off at so we didn't actually find out we were at the wrong place until an English guy told us where we were......just our luck!) But it turned out we were only a 5 minute walk away just a ... read more

The next destination on our Andaman tour was the city of Trang, the main port of call for those heading to the aptly named Trang Islands. We’d read that this group of Thai islands are both reasonably undeveloped and, to an extent undiscovered so had gone through our guidebook highlighting the ones we’d like to visit to map out a rough route taking in 2 or 3 of the islands depending on how we got on. We stopped a night in Trang so we could pay a visit to the raved about night market. As it was a Sunday we got to visit both the main daily market and also the second market which sets up outside the train station and more conveniently our hotel! The first main market did not disappoint and we tried a ... read more

After yet another horrific journey which should have taken 4 hours but instead took 10 (including a 2 hour wait in someones front garden - only in Thailand!) we were dropped off at our accommodation in Koh Lanta. The owner of the huts we had booked to stay in was very friendly but the huts were like being back in the jungle, it was made of bamboo with holes so there was plenty of wildlife in there and we had a big mosquito net all around our bed, and one little fan which did little to cool the room. But we thought we would suck it up and enjoy being at one with nature.. Our first impressions of Koh Lanta weren’t great, we had heard so many good things about the place, the beautiful beaches, the ... read more

Hello all. I came to realise something while we were on Phi Phi that I'd like to share it with you. In many ways travelling is very similar to normal life - it revolves around 3 main things - eating, shitting and sleeping. I would say, roughly speaking that about 30% of your time is spent sleeping or finding somewhere to sleep, 20% of your time is spent shitting or finding somewhere to shit (or indeed not shitting and worrying about why you are not shitting) and another 20% of your time is spent eating or finding somewhere to eat. Another 20% roughly is spent talking about how good or bad your sleep was, how good or bad your shit/toilet was, or how good or bad your food was. The last 10% is just literally travelling. ... read more

After the madness of Phi Phi we needed to relax, unwind and get away from the party scene, as well as restore our faith in the country and its people, so arrived on Koh Lanta hoping to have a nice last few days. Thankfully, it provided just what we needed and having had no real expectations before we got there, it also surprised us in a good way. Getting off the boat at the pier there were a lot of taxi drivers and hotel touts vying for our business, and one guy seemed pretty genuine when he told us he had room at his resort on Khong Klong beach which he would take us to for free and it sounded nice so we went with him. We usually avoid touts like the plague but this guy ... read more

Koh Lanta, 5-11 February Koh Ngai, 11-24 February Koh Samui, 24 February-4 March Bangkok, 4-5 March Koh Lanta was very relaxing and very beautiful. We spent the first few days just enjoying being settled in one place, wandering around Saladan where we were staying (the main dive and tourist site) and sampling fresh seafood caught just metres from where we ate. It was my birthday a couple of days after we arrived so we booked a boat trip out around the islands. The day began with an early morning drive from the north of the island right down to to the boat port on the east coast near to the Old Town. As we drove, it got more and more green and lush, the jungle ferns got bigger, the undergrowth around us more dense and the ... read more

Well, the last two days have been excellent. Great weather and more good diving. The food has been very good and last night I had the the incredibly hot/spicy 'Tom Yam Goong' soup the lips have yet to lose some of the numbness but it was excellent. I'll post some more pictures on here when we get to Bangkok of sunsets, (more) fish! etc Today is our last day at Pimalai. We leave at 13:30 on the speedboat then minbus limo to Krabi airport then it's a 1 hour flight to Bangkok. We're staying there for 1 night then its a 13 hour flight home :-(... read more
