Relaxed, chilled out and knackered as we slowly walked out of the plane into 35 degree sunshine, strolling into the airport and the baggage just trundling around with our backpacks reaching us like clockwork. Outside was like nothing I have experienced before, the weather, view, people, smell, sounds, atmosphere was similar to many other places but something more powerful was present and it felt awesome. Even the taxi/minibus and local bus sales women stuck in a tiny room the size of the garden shed and competing against each other were at ease even though 3 were on one side and another 3 on the other. Everything was just chilled and laid back. Krabi had been nice, as a place to get away from the madness of Bangkok, but it only felt like a stop over. Locals ... read more

Ko Lanta consists of several islands, the two largest of which are Ko Lanta Noi "Small Lanta Island") and Ko Lanta Yai , "Big Lanta Island"). However, Ko Lanta Yai is where all the tourist action is, so this article will refer to it simply as "Ko Lanta". Ko Lanta is a large size island with 6 km wide and over 30 kms long, 9 beaches lie from north to south along the sunset coast. The island boasts stunning scenery, fantastic white sandy beaches, coastlines dotted with more than 70 small islands and plenty of forest, coral reefs and under water life. The geography of the island is typically mangroves; coral rimmed beaches; and rugged tree covered hills. Ko Lanta is popular with tourists seeking a holiday away from the parties. It's popular with a significantly ... read more

Can't believe I have come to the end of my time here! I left on Friday night, flew to Chang Mai for my next placement at The Elephant Nature Park. I am looking forward to it but so sad to leave here as I've had such a wonderful time. Just getting to really know all the dogs and cats little quirks. It has been a very hectic last few weeks at the center and the numbers of sick and injured animals has risen considerably. The vets and vet nurses have had a really hard time dealing with all different types of situations from animals being poisoned, stabbed, road accidents, we even had a goat in who had been in labour for a very long time. Unfortunately both Mother and baby did not survive. It's hard not ... read more

The main thing that hit me about being in Thailand again was the smell…yes Thailand has a specific smell and if you’ve been there you’ll understand what I’m talking about. To try and describe it; it’s a mix of heat, damp, sweat, food, fumes and a tinge of sewage and stale water all blended together. Haha mmmmmm Thailand! After some smoothing talking or should I say hilarious mime and broken English at Krabi airport I managed to get the donations of bandaging materials through customs without having to open it and inevitably lose it or pay a hefty ‘tax’ to the two Thai gentleman that manned the xray machine. My adventure continued to getting a taxi and arriving at my gorgeous hotel. Splurging out on the Dee Andaman hotel for 2 nights proved to be an ... read more

Transfer days are always an interesting experience and the one from Langkawi to the Thai island of Koh Lanta proved to be no exception. This is a fair old jaunt so we’d chosen the operator we were to travel with very carefully and the friendly, professional, knowledgeable lady at Langkawi Tours earned our vote. She confidently explained we’d be picked up from our hotel at 7.30am sharp, taken to Kuah port to get the ferry across to the Thai mainland and then a direct, air conditioned executive coach for the five hour road and ferry trip over to Koh Lanta. Almost none of this was true. Our 7.30am pickup from the hotel cheerfully trundled up twenty minutes late meaning a small amount of fretting from us and a bit of a scramble to make the ferry. ... read more

Hello Friends and Family We arrived on Koh Lanta after a long journey from Malaysia. Three ferries and two mini-vans later we were dropped off at Coco Lanta Resort greeted by our good friend Vicky who manages the hotel. It was so great to re-connect with her again since we met her 3 and 5 years ago working at the bungalows we stayed at then. We have been keeping in touch with her through Facebook and she encouraged us to stay at her new place of employment and we're glad we did! The resort is fabulous and just perfect for us. The hotel is only a year old so everything is new, modern and spotless. We have a cute little bungalow with lovely linens, spacious bathroom and a king size bed. It's right on the beach ... read more

Since Yvon's arrival at new year (non-eventful other than the bar we were in setting light to itself with fireworks) we have adopted lanta as an unofficial home. Other than a luxury short break on the Thai East Coast I've now been here a month. A change is as good as a rest they say, and our relentless regime of eating, drinking and relaxing started to take its toll, so we decided to take a vacation to the Malaysian island of Langkawi. The journey from lanta involved a 5 hour mini van drive and an hour by ferry. When Yvon and I travel I always seem to get the worst seat- this occasion seemed no different when I was allocated a 5cm space at the back between a large German and a stack of luggage, and ... read more

Lordy- a crazy week. I was sad to leave NLF but very ready for a new adventure (and a gin and tonic). Journey was largely uneventful in retrospect (it was no caledonian sleeper and a bit weird being the only farang on the train but, most importantly, they served beer). After 24hours of travelling I made it to my new place of work. Staff accommodation at the hostel leaves something to be desired ( a few things actually, a door, linen, sanitary washing & lavatory facilities, a stick to keep out chickens and mental German men). The place is a ramshackle collection of bamboo and clay huts and has a reputation as a laid back, hippyish community (ie everyone is stoned and the music is very, very loud). My thinking was that I'd save some money ... read more

Hey All, I know better! Stupid, stupid, stupid. I am religious about keeping my sunscreen on, but for some reason I go jump into the pool today without it. And you guessed it, SUNBURN. Thank goodness I realized early enough that it did not get serious, but its very tender to say the least. Its mainly my nose and my shoulders and upper back. There is a pharmacy right at the end of our driveway so I will run up there in the morning and get some lotion. Decided once again to blow off the moto ride. I was having such a good time just swimming, reading, took a nap in my hammock, before I knew it I looked at my watch and it was 3pm. Our BBQ on the beach has kinda taken off today ... read more

Hey All, Let me start out by saying, in the world of Travel Bloggers, I am the Jerry Seinfeld of blogging, my blog is about nothing. If you are a Seinfeld fan at all (Iris, Lisa, Angela) you will know what I mean. What did I do today, I got up, had breakfast, sat by the pool, in other words nothing, but I blog about it. I blog for my family and friends back home who find my musings interesting for the most part, after all what serious traveler cares about how I got chased out of a Bangkok Massage House by a little Thai lady with a mean broom, or my ride down a mountain in Peru yelling Bano, Bano to the poor frantic driver trying to find me a toilet before I crapped myself, ... read more
