The second “half” of our trip in Thailand revolved around a kayaking trip off the island of Koh Chang that Kelsey discovered back in September. After flying back to Bangkok, we boarded a 5-hour bus ride heading east towards Cambodia and then after a 30-minute ferry we landed on Koh Chang (direct translation is “Elephant Island“). The relatively close proximity to Bangkok and the fact that it’s enroute to Cambodia favoured Koh Chang’s development as it first brought many backpackers, closely followed by “real” tourists with money to spend. As a result, every Tom, Dick and Harry (or in Thailand - Nam, Lek and Phram) wanted a piece of the action banging up resorts, cafes, restaurants, bars and shops along the entire west coast (beachy side) of the island. Unfortunately not all dreams come true… although ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! :-) Aww, I'm sorry for being such a lazy bone but I just can't help it. I really do try to write but I lack creativity and I'm just too tired in the evenings. haha. I promise I'll be a good girl from now one. So yeah, we arrived in Bangkok on the 21st in the afternoon and took the airport-city-link skytrain to town and then continued by taxi to Khao San Road. It was amazing to be back and my Thai skills gradually returned as well - helpful. We found quite a cheap place to stay in Soi Rambuttri, parallel to Khao San Road. There was a weird petrol smell in the room but as it was late we agreed to take the room. (More about that later..) After some amazing Pad ... read more

So if you didn't already know.. Thais love to party! That's great news for us. Life should be celebrated. In America we get 2 weeks to 3 weeks off for the holidays where we can celebrate with our families. Here in Thailand (for the most part) school continues and the school throws a huge celebration bash for the new year. We were told about a week before about the celebration and it meant NO CLASSES! That's always a good thing to know. The celebration was the Friday before New Years. The day of celebration started with a long assembly and then a food offering for the local monks. There were tables set up so that the monks could walk past and accept the food and offering blessings. After they finished the offerings the students rushed to ... read more

I got up this morning and headed to the beach, it was only my 2nd time sunbathing since iv been travelling. Though the first time probably didnt count cos i only managed half an hour. I stayed out for a few hours, the beach was beautiful and the water is calm, clear and warm. I cant stress how beautiful the island is- I swam out looked back and it was just white sand and jungle covered mountains. The island is a bit touristy though if im honest, everything is in english even though there are hardly any english people here mainly europeans- germans and french i think. And really strange is the fact it says everywhere topless sunbathing is not aloud in thailand yet there were loads of people! I dont get topless sunbathing it offends ... read more

I left for koh chang about 10 am, I took a motorbike taxi to the station, i love motorbike taxis theyre soooo fun but also very dangerous too i expect but it was my only choice. I then got a taxi to the port. Got there got my ticket then waited for the boat. I was the only non thai on the boat which if im honest was a bit un nearving but all was good. The journey was just over an hour and at the other side i was ushered in to the back of a pick up truck and off i went to 'lonely beach'. The island is spectacular, all you can see in all directions is rainforest, unless your on the beach then sand obviously, except for where im staying where it is ... read more

I think the last post i made I'd just been skydiving. The day after I went to watch my first opera and i loved it! It was Don Giovanni by Mozart really surprised me it was very very dark and very funny! Just coming off the subject im in an internet cafe with loads of thai teenagers who are all online gaming together and screaming at eachother!!! doing my frigging head in. The day after i headed off to Tamworth ready for the ranch getting off the train i met a giy from London on the same course so we made the decision to go for a few pints, well not pints cos theyre lightweights in oz and drink something called scooners or something like that- which is smaller. Even so we ended up pissed and ... read more

Several days later and we're still in Koh Chang - finding it hard to leave such a beautiful island. However we have relocated a couple of times, sampling different beaches and areas. My favourite is still Lonely Beach - we managed to get a hut which was only 5m from the sea and had a very relaxed, backpacker feel to it. (Siem Beach Huts). After Lonely Beach we headed to White Sands which was nice although more built up and busy. Yesterday we went elephant trekking! It was fantastic (pictures coming soon). The highlight was definitely jumping into a river with the elephants to give one a good scrub down. Today was our first day of rain since arriving in Thailand. We had planned to go snorkelling round some of the smaller nearby islands but it ... read more

We had a fantastic last day in Bangkok on Wednesday. We were both pretty tired after two days solid sightseeing in the heat so decided to head up to Dosit Park to relax. However, on the way, we wandered past Dosit Zoo and decided to take a look. Spent the morning in the zoo which was lovely. There was a huge lake so we spent a while just watching the fish, turtles and lizards swimming about which was very relaxing. Joe went to a Mai Thai (not sure if thats the right spelling) boxing training session. We went to the street gym we found the other day and he spent about an hour and a half being taught the basic techniques by a personal trainer. It was very cool - although the 'Rocky' esqu atmosphere was ... read more
