Koh Phangan is known for its spiritual intent / content, and of course for the wonderful aqua sports etc, however what i think it's practically most known for is THE full moon party ... every month to be held at the most southeastern point of the island Haad Rin (where i was staying in my little oasis on the northwestern part of the island oasis on the northwestern part of the island Haad Tian) ... thousands of party animals flock to the island days before the full moon which i really noticed on the roads ... way more mopeds and way more accidents which reminded mi once again howsmart i had been to have rented my jeep ... wsmart i had been to have rented my jeep ... i first hooked up with Marion and Liza ... read more

Daniel and Tanja have been travelling a few months through the world and decided to get married in Thailand ... they told who ever wants to come can join us, at first they thought maybe 5 or 6 people come, we ended up with 17 ... Sjoerd (who i joined for the national marine park trip) had Daniel's wedding suit custom made in Bangkok and as icing on the cake he had the exact shirt and pants made for the boys, which of course came as total surprise to tanja ... i will summarize the day, the rest u can view on the pictures After my horrible unjustified holding by the Thai police i barely was in time for the dressing of the kids ... we took a longboat to a beach on the east coast ... read more

I'm not only making this trip to become a beach bumb, my nephew Daniel and his dutch wife Tanja with their two sons Ziggy (4.5) and Django (2) have been traveling around the world for the past few months and decided to get married in Thailand ... they told everyone whoever wants to come join us, and they had told mi if 5 people will come we're a happy couple ... but lo and behold, all together 20 of their friends came and thus i ended up in a very busy dutch social week ... everyone was pitching in to plan the wedding and within one week of combined effort i think i attended the best wedding of my life ... in the next blog will tell a bit more about it and u can view ... read more

One more comment about Cambodia which really had an impact on mi ... I kept wondering why there were so many hospitals and medical centers and then i realized ... I'd say at least 30% of locals my age are missing a hand, a foot, an arm, a leg are scarred all over their bodies, a cruel reminder of the khmer rouge regime, nor was there anyone who spoke french, all of them died at the killing fields ... i first wanted to go south to phom phen and learn more about this history, however the flight from there to Koh Samui (biggest island on southeastern thai coast) was gonna cost me at least 500 euros, so i opted to travel back by bus to bangkok and take the night train to southern thailand from there ... read more

After waking up early, and eating some muesli (granola), fruit, and yogurt, I got onto the bus bound for Ko Chang. We drove around in circles in the Khaosan area for almost an hour, finally picking up some straggler backpackers. The bus ride to Koh Chang was fairly uneventful. I relaxed on the 6 hour journey by listening to my ipod and checking out hte passing scenery. I have been enjoying the variety of cool music on my ipod, containing mostly songs that were recommended to me by friends. Lots of oldies, and some new age techno as well, a good mix. When we finally got to the pier in Trang, which is the pushoff point to the island of Ko Chang, we waited for a bit for our tongtheau truck to take us the next ... read more

So after a minibus, a big bus, a border crossing involving lots of waiting around, another minibus, a ferry and a pick up truck I arrived on the beautiful island of Koh Chang, thailands 2nd biggest island. This place has everything you could possibly want from an island; beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, jungle, mountains and parties! I spent about a week indulging in the beach bum lifestyle, lounging around, eating, drinking an reading. One particular bucket fuelled night culminated in 10 of us going for a 6am swim in the pouring rain. I also got to enjoy a cracking birthday night partying on the sand with a few randoms who took me in to celebrate. Roomed with a german guy in a beach hut on lonely the beach which is the prettiest and cheapest beack ... read more

After a one and a half hour drive to the Thai – Cambodia border to visit Prasat Khao Phra Wihan we found there would be no access on that day. The famous temple located strategically on top of a mountain overlooking Cambodia has been a point of conflict for many years. On the day that I decided to visit the temple some Thai and Cambodian troops had a stand-off in the nearby area and it was decided to close the temple for safety reasons. I was disappointed but still could view the temple using some binoculars at the Thai lookout area and had a great view of the mountain and Cambodia below. I will try to visit the temple from Siem Reap on the Cambodian side on a future visit. Fortunately I had a plan B ... read more

Sam Phan Bok (Three Thousand Holes) Monday 16th January was one of my best days on tour since I started visiting Thailand. My legs are still recovering from all the walking and climbing but it was an unforgettable day. Sam Phan Bok is close to the border of Laos and that is how the location is spelt on site so I will go with that and it means “Three Thousand Holes”. At this time of year the Mekong River is very low instead of the powerful river seen between July and October. It took two hours to get to Sam Phan Bok and the nearby roads seem to have more than three thousand holes in them but only for a short distance approaching the river. My driver is not a guide and usually one of the ... read more

Ubon Ratchathani is a very good place to visit and the people have not been exposed to as much tourism like other parts of Thailand and can maintain their normal lifestyle. This was my first visit to Ubon which is a large city in the east, close to Cambodia and part of Isaan, my favorite region of Thailand. This is what I call the “real” Thailand where most people are even more friendly, charming and polite than the tourist areas and live a normal life at work and play. It is quiet and peaceful, the motorcycle and car drivers are very careful and also polite unlike the hectic traffic in other places. I saw very few foreigners in my five days in Ubon and everywhere I went in the city and region I met the most ... read more
