It is 02h30 and the coughing starts. It's like they are in our room. I start by feeling empathy for someone who must be really ill. It gets worse and I eventually turn on the ac to try to mute the noise, but it gets cold and we have no blankets in the room. By 04h00 there is a lot of activity in the room next door. I am convinced they must be taking somebody to the hospital. He must be very sick. Pneumonia perhaps? I am expecting to hear the dying rasps of an old man, but instead, it is the children who come out past our window. Just talking, but they could be sitting in bed with me they are so loud. Oh, it is only one child! The morning ablutions start - coughing, ... read more

Bangkok and Koh Chang – part 2 After a great first few days relaxing on the beach we decided to do another boat trip to visit a few other islands as the first trip was so good. We had taken it easy the night before so we were up early and after a quick breakfast we were picked up and taken to Bang Bao pier to get on the boat. The format was similar to the other boat trip we did, stopping at different islands and beaches to swim and snorkel throughout the day, with a delicious lunch on the boat in between. The staff were kitted out in Xmas outfits which was cute and again they were super friendly. The water was a bit choppier this time so while the snorkelling was still good it ... read more

Bangkok and Koh Chang – part 1 Whilst we were sad to be leaving Vietnam, we were really excited to be arriving back in Thailand, probably our favourite country. Unfortunately the excitement was short lived as we discovered that Vic’s big backpack had been picked open (through the zip) by baggage handlers at Ho Chi Min airport, even though it had a cover and padlock on it, and some bits had been stolen which were hidden in secret compartments in the bag – we think they must have been seen as the bag went through the x-ray machine. We have flown hundreds of times and never had a problem so this was a real shock and we didn’t realise until we got to our hotel so not a lot we could do, but hopefully our insurance ... read more

Its about 10h30 when our speedboat approaches Koh Kood (or Koh Kut) We pass the expensive Coral Beach resort and then the very expensive Soneva Kiri, before turning up into a river mouth and this is where my camera promptly runs out of memory. No footage of our arrival at the stunning Bann Makok which is where we will be staying for three days. Bann Makok is an 8 room boutique hotel built out of reclaimed wood in the style of a traditional fishing village. It floats on stilts in the mangroves on a clear lagoon and is terribly stylish. No amount of photography can truly show the character but take a look at the website: www.bannmakok.com. The owner has travelled extensively in SE Asia and has been collecting beautiful things for years to put together ... read more

Tiny Koh Mak island is the shape of a starfish with a leg missing. It is my favourite Thai island so far, ever. 10km long and about 5km wide with two long palm fringed beaches, and a couple of smaller ones if you're willing to explore. It is so laid back that even the sunburn takes two days to come out. But, the goggos! (Insects for those who don't speak South African). I have developed a scientific theory about the ultraviolet wave lengths emitted by London white skin to attract anything that bites. And if it doesn't try to eat you alive, it will certainly give you a nasty rash. Stop that scratching!! We are staying in a pretty traditional(ish) Thai teak house a couple of meters away from the pool at Good Times Resort. This ... read more

We arrived at the pier at around 7 and found a taxi. First we had planned to go to White Sand Beach but it turned out that there were not many bungalows there, mostly hotels and too many tourists. We would have stayed if it wasn't for our taxi driver who told us we couldn't get a room for under 2000 bath there, which of course turned out not to be true. So we continued to Lonely beach which had also been recommended to us by our friend in BKK. We got some bungalows at Siam Hut for 380 bath, which was okay but there were no towels, soap, toilet paper and so on... On the other hand we were right on the beach. We went to the beach to catch up on our sleep after ... read more

Finally on the beach with electricity and wifi working at the same time, and enough bandwidth to get onto the internet. So, catchup time. This will be the third time I try to write this entry, so lets hope Travelblog doesn't loose it again when I hit save. Ahhh technology.... LAST DAYS IN BANGKOK: Bangkok is one big shopping mall. From cheap and nasty rip-offs, through good quality fakes, to the real thing; you can buy anything here (Except maybe a cheap pair of pretty heals for a smart night out... But that's another story). We are not in Bangkok over a weekend so unfortunately we have to miss out on our favourite Chatuchak weekend market, but we head off to Sukhumvit and the famous Pantip Plaza aka IT Centre first. If it is battery powered ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Eastern Thailand » Ubon Ratchathani October 5th 2012

So after that quick overnight stop at little Nang Rong, I arrived in Ubon Ratchatani, one of the easternmost larger cities in Thailand, from where I would make the crossing into Laos. Apparently Ubon was an important air base for the US forces during the Vietnam War, during which time the city prospered. However it does seem as if not that much has happened in the city since, which in many respects seems to have seen better days. The city itself is not large, and quite walkable. There are a few temples of some importance to the city, but it seems the only time it really gets crowded is during the Candle Festival that it's famous for, which occurs annually in July. That's probably also the only time the old, soulless 1970s style 3-star hotels fill ... read more
