Hello from a stunning KOh Tao! Arrived yesterday from Koh pangan where we had our half moon party! Was a great night with lots of neon pant and UV lights met an Emirates steward and stewardess who were very entertaining and made us all want to drop oout of uni to become airliners! The party was in the jungle and was huge!! although we didnt make it to sunrise which many do we gave it a good attempt! Perhaps becasue pf that we able to make it to our ferry the next day to koh tao. KOh tao is stunning alot smaller than the other islands and famous for diving and snorkling, tomorrow we plan to go on a boat trip to shark island that ironiquely has no sharks! 20th July - 23rd July. After leaving Kampot at 8am, we finally arrived on the Thai Island of Koh Chang at 8pm after a mission of a journey including 9 vehicle changes and a ferry ride. Luckily there were about 8 of us doing the journey so we were able to stick together and ended up at the same beach resort. Our rooms were all little cabins along the beach and the communal area and restaurant was situated right on the beach edge which was brilliant and we saw some great sunsets! The following day was largely spent on the beach with a break midday to explore the town of 'Lonely Beach'. The next day began with a 2 hour elephant trek which was great especially as at one point the seats were taken off and ... read more

We arrived in Ubon after crossing the border back into Thailand by foot giving us 15days on a new visa. We managed to stock up on some essentials like allergy pills and travel adaptors. It was nice to be back in a Thai city and be the the only westerners around. Ubon is famous for its died cotton and there were little handicraft shops everywhere. We only stopped one night and there was a huge cockroach in our room that had me running around like a mad person. We left for Surin the next day. Thinking we would be able to find out some more about the elephant study centre we'd read about we wandered around Surin for ages and noone could help us. After a night here we just caught the bus 58km north to ... read more

Day 4 of our trip to South East Asia and you'll be glad to hear that we're all Staying Alive. Just. We seem to have finally mastered the art of Thai transport. Having battled our way from Bangkok to Surat Thani (who knew you had to book a flight that departs AFTER your first flight arrives?! mental, we know...) we then stayed for one night in the town and tried our first street food. We managed to avoid food poisoning by not eating very much. It wasn't exactly what you'd call gourmet food. We then went to an ice cream parlour and ended the night feeling very pleased with ourselves. The battle with transport continued the next day as we took 2 buses, a boat and a tuk-tuk to our hostel on Ko Samui, a beautiful ... read more

Laos was the first place we felt quite sad to leave it’s a beautiful country with fascinating, likeable people. In our last blog we forgot to mention that in Luang Prabang there is an early morning Monk procession for alms down the main town street - an early start about 6am. We'd been advised not to miss it and had also been carrying around a substantial amount of Laos money passed to us from some Polish travellers - karma ruled we'd have to part with the cash. We’d agreed to see my sister and her family in Thailand so we had to leave Laos and get there before they headed back to the UK for their summer break. A bus took us down to the Thai border – immediately across the border the affluence of Thailand ... read more

We had a couple of days of lovely sunshine, so I spent the first on the beach, and then on the second I visited nearby Bang Bo and afterwards went back to the beach. The beach in itself was relatively quiet, spent time just laying on the beach watching the waves, and jumping in for a dip when it got too hot. The tide comes in quite quickly, and there were two girls playing around in the surf. Unfortunately for them, before they noticed the sea had snuck up on their belongings, and there was five minutes of them frantically trying to save all of their stuff from being swept into the sea. Being the gentleman I am, I watched for a moment with a smile on my face. I got up to go and offer ... read more

To get to Koh Chang in itself was fun. It all started at 07.30 in the morning with an unexpected trip on the back of a scooter with my backpack behind me. I am not a huge fan of scooters at the best of time, and the thought of heading through Bangkok in the early morning traffic didn't fill me with confidence. Luckily the trip by scooter wasn't too far, and I just stuck a stupid grin on my face and held on, rather than my other option of closing my eyes and hoping for the best. The bus was half full, and as the first on, I managed to get the best seats with noone in front of me. The trip in tiself was mainly uneventful, 3 dead dogs were the only real thing of ... read more

After leaving Cambodia on 17 March I travelled to Ko Chang. We had to change into one of those horrible minibusses at the border and typically for Thailand the minibus driver asked us to pay an extra THB100 because we weren't enough people. We already had paid for our trip from Battambong to Ko Chang but what can you do - argue and upset yourself or just fork out the extra bhat. Finally we left the border and travelled towards Trat where you catch the ferry to Ko Chang. As it is with minibusses we stopped at random intervals at random places. We just had a toilet break when we got caught up in what to us looked like a traffic jam. After sitting in it for 30 mins it became clear that it is a ... read more

Just a few more things about Koh Phangan ... i think anyone who has ever been on an island coverd with jungle and an unknown it's easy to get lost, however i put into practise what i learned 30 years ago from my dear friend Eric ... always use visual references, a mailbox, an orange painted house, a generator, elephant park, antennas etc ... and if you then still can't find your way it doesn't matter either as at one point u just hit water again and one look up to the sky and the Sun, moon and or stars will tell ya what part of the island u are (midst of course u can read these natural directions - which i actually can ..,) so gotta say a few times i got lost , ... read more
