Ok so today is day 4 of my time here in Dajia and I am getting used to it, i think. Today was very educational for me because one of the English teachers took me to the train and bus stations and showed me how to get out of town!! I am desperate to meet up with my friends and explore the rest of Taiwan. I can easily walk to the stations in about 10min. All I need is a note in Chinese saying where I want to go and I am off! The teacher also showed me around some more and offered to show me the swimming pool but said he had to wait until I got a scooter. And for everyone worried about me and a scooter I am only getting 50cc, just enough ... read more

Well it is day three of my time here in Dajia. I have had a rough time adjusting from our wonderful compound in Sansia. It was very hard to leave all my new friends and go to a place where I dont know anyone. I am having a hard time communicating even with my English coteachers. Even though I am teaching English my own English has gone to crap because you can only use key words and phrases to communicate and they do not have a large vocabulary. One comment from a teacher was when a girl rode by on a scooter the teacher said look at the spicy girl, she asked if that was right and I said you can say hot girl or pretty girl. Things like that are so funny. I am currently ... read more

This first blog is parts from an email I just sent out to friends and family! First off: The Weird things in Taiwan ~ Taiwanese pick their nose in public!! SICK ~ NO flushing toilet paper ~ Laws are suggestions only, no one follows them ~ No chewing gum, drinking, or eating on the subway...we saw 2 foreigners get tickets ~ Cheese is hard to find and very expensive ~ Restaurants are as cheap as buying groceries ~ There is a 7 eleven on almost every corner ~ McDonald's has rice cakes for buns ~ Nobody buys things in stores, just night markets ~ You cannot drink the water, you must find a giant water cooler ~ They like to stare and point at me ~ Everything is sooo cheap here ~ Stray dogs are everywhere, ... read more

One hour before the bus leaves for the airport. I guess I should try to sum this trip up...but the energy isn't really there after having spent most of yesterday in bed fighting a bad stomach flu. Today I'm doing much better though, but still lack the energy. There's so much to say about this trip...about the people...and everything I've seen and experienced...I guess I need good with time to do it all justice. I will arrive Stuttgart around 9am tomorrow. Wish me a good flight! Bye for now /M ... read more

Less than two days left. I left Taipei yesterday to go to Taichung further down the island. Taichung is Mavis' home town and the third largest city in Taiwan. My last days in Taipei contained some more good shopping as well as a visit to the worlds tallest building Taipei 101 and a backstage sneak-in to see the West Side Story. Michelle, another friend of Mavis', is a professional musician and plays the bassoon in the orchestra, so she brought us in through the backdoor. Even though musicals isn't my favourite art form, I enjoyed the show! Taipei 101 was very touristy and in the fastest elevator in the world they displayed the speed in the very common unit meters per minute just so that they could reach the magic number of 1000. The view was ... read more

They all want me. I'm too delicious. I look like I've got some sort of pox, red bumps everywhere. There's a constellation on my face (the only part that remains uncovered when I sleep) and some on my arms and legs. I'm beginning to lose faith in the power of Burts Bees Insect Repellant... Maybe that stuff is formulated to only repell insects in the Western Hemisphere (and maybe on in the US?) To think on the bright side, maybe I'd be even more bitten otherwise? Tomorrow we had to Thailand, and I'm already getting scared! 1. It's hotter and more humid. 2. It's supposed to be more mosquito-y. Ah! I'm too princessy, I don't know if I can handle it. :( Father's having doubts about going with me for these few days. I think he's ... read more

SBA and I arrived last night to Ama's house (technically father's house) here in Taichung. There are no big plans for me to tour around here since there's not much to see, but I am allowed to roam by myself. Free at last! I have a phone card and our address copied down, which is all I need if I do get lost. This morning we all went out for exercise at the park. The way father puts it, it's "I'm going to walk with Ama". But in reality, which is a wee bit disappointing, he pushes Ama in her wheelchair to the park and then walks about 1200 meters with her back and forth at a straight stretch. She's not walking much these days and she can't do it unassisted anymore. She sometimes walks with ... read more

Taichung was a fun city. There were many sites to see and lots of food to eat. The main attraction in Taichung was the Aborignal amusement park. Taiwan was not always inhabited by mainland Chinese people. Taiwan actually had Taiwanese people. They can be compared to the Native American Indians in America. The aborignals have several tribes spread out throughout Taiwan. However, there are less and less aboriginals because many of them have mixed in with the Chinese blood. So it's kind of interesting. Well, during this trip I was reading, "The Five People You Meet In Heaven." The main character dies because of a amusement park ride (don't worry I didn't give away the story...the guy is dead from the begining). So, right when I finished the book, we arrive at the amusement park.....hmmmmm....scary. Yeah, ... read more

NOTE: It's a little embarassing that it has taken me this long to put up this journal. I've been home for about a month and a half, working and catching up with people. On the 5th of Januray I'll be heading over to Finland to live for a while. I'm doing National Service (like in the military, I have Finnish citizenship and it's compulsory - should be interesting) for at least the first 6 months. I may or may not be there for a while, we'll see how things go. I'm also adding a few journals filling in South America and a bunch of photos about the Inca Trail. Sorry about all the emails, they're sent automatically. So anyway, I'm finally back home in Cairns after leaving camp and tripping around the US and stopping in ... read more

Day 5 (29 July 2005) We left Fuh Chun Hotel early today to make our way to Sun Moon Lake. A bus outside the hotel took us to Puli before we change yet another bus to Sun Moon Lake. Breakfast was egg and ham sandwich & soya milk purchased at a roadside stall in Puli. Really yummy though may not be the most hygienic. The lake itself was ……BIG. After getting ourselves acquainted at the information office, we proceed to engage in a boat tour around the lake together with 3 fellow Taiwanese. Not much people today so the 3 idyllic stops around the lake was ‘longer’ than usual according to them. The rest of the afternoon was spent browsing through the souvenir stores and taking in the fresh cool air the area had to ... read more
