First stop today was Wade’s elementary school. We were on a mission to find a childhood friend of his. She appeared in several old pictures he had, and he seemed to have a good recollection of her. The school was able to give us some addresses, but she wasn’t at any of them. After that we headed out to Sun Moon Lake, one of the most popular destinations in Taiwan. It’s home to the aboriginal Thao people, but these days all you see is busloads of tourists. The Lake gets it’s name from the two islands in the center of it—one round, one crescent-shaped (sun and moon). However, during the 1999 earthquake, the “moon” (Lalu Island) sunk. Our first stop at Sun Moon Lake was one of the most famous (and expensive) resorts in Taiwan ... read more

Had some hot pot with the family yesterday. Lots of them were there and my sister had to tell me who was who since I don't remember from 12 years ago. So much food. So good. They had the chicken nuggets that taste like McD's chicken nuggets. Perhaps they are the ones that didn't make the McD 'cut'. Urgh...let's not think about that and just enjoy ignorantly. Afterwards, my aunt took my sister and I to another market and bought some stuff for us including guava. I love guava. Crap thing is that my first guava turned out to be rotten! Yuck!! So, I moved on to the second and it was yum yum. Mmmm... After the day market, Alice and I went home and then headed out to the night market--again. I had to buy ... read more

The Go Karts here are so much fun. Well, I have no previous experience to draw from but nonetheless, they are wicked. I started off pretty slow--getting used to the idea that I wasn't going to flip over. Then as I got comfortable, I went a bit faster. I dont' know how fast they went but the others said it was faster than regular ones they were used to. I still ended up last and with dirt all over the exposed parts of skin. I guess I did eat their dust. In the evening, we went to see Perfect Stranger at the movies--Gold Class style. Wow. I mean, 'WOW!'. It was such an amazing experience. Only 30 seats per theatre. All of which are huge lazy boy reclining chairs with a small table to share between ... read more

Our First day in Taichung began with breakfast at a small place not far from the motel. The tiny unenclosed “storefront” part of the building was where people sat and ate—the “kitchen” was actually set up under a canopy on the sidewalk. The food was good and we got our first taste of Taiwanese red tea (a green tea that is fermented longer, but not long enough to become black tea). The six of us ate for about US$3. After we ate, we picked up Ma-Ma and went to Wade’s grandparent’s gravesite. His grandmother died when he was still in Taiwan, and his grandfather died after coming to the US and returning to Taiwan shortly thereafter for surgery. So he never really got to say goodbye to either of them. It was a very emotional ... read more

Woke up this morning at 7:41am again. I woke up at the exact same time yesterday too. Kind of weird. The sun is already so bright so I always think it's noon but it's far from it. Helped my sister clean her apartment. Sidenote: Her cat likes to eat plastic and then it has to be locked up because shortly after, he throws up. Why he likes to eat plastic? I have no idea. After helping Alice with a couple of short errands, we went to the bike shop where I ordered a new mountain bike. I'm just going to mail it home super slow so it'll get to Canada just as I return. It was the Giant Yukon AS840. She's a pretty one. Hm, I guess now I have to take up biking again. Again? ... read more

So I forgot to mention that 2 weeks ago I was in an accident. I was riding the bus to the city and our crazy bus driver hit a BMW. I'm not really surpised since people here drive like maniacs. Anyways, we were on the short bus so it was a pretty rough impact. Unfortunatly for me I have long legs and the seats are Asian sized, meaning my legs already dig into the seat in front of me. So with the impact my knees were crushed into the seat in front of me. I didnt notice much and nothing would keep me from shopping. So I ignored the dull pain. The past week the pain has been worse but I was like I'm just being a wimp. But it got so bad where it hurt ... read more

I have had lots of time today...obviously this is my third blog of the day. But I was reading thru my old blogs and it so funny to see how much I have changed and what my first impressions were of this place. Some of the impressions have changed while many have stayed the same. I find it humerous to see how enthusiastic I was a first, but I guess the novelty has to wear off at some point. I noticed I talked alot about boys in the beginning, and I realized I haven't mentioned anything in a while. Probably cause I am immune to the fact there are no decent guys here. I am past the point of caring now. They only thing on my mind is how the heck I am going to ... read more

My sister took me to pick up her new bicycle today. She's taking it with her to Canada. It's a pretty nice bike. I think I may pick one up myself. Giant DS821. Have a looksy. We were going to carry the giant Giant box on the scooter but when we put it on the foot rest area, we quickly realized that that wasn't the greatest idea. So, we trekked it home instead. It was awkwardly funny since our heights are quite different and I am hopelessly weak. I took a 4.5 hour afternoon nap and woke up to go to the night market. To get there, Mark, my sister's boyfriend took me on the back of his motorbike. Around the corner from the market was a tattoo parlour where he proceeded to enter to ... read more

I am here! What a plane ride! I mean plane rides. They were all on time and my luggage arrived safely. United Airlines I commend you (thus far). I essentially slept all the way to San Francisco. From San Francisco to Nagoya, I had an empty seat to my left and right so I was pretty comfortable. There were people at the ends though so laying down wasn't really an option. At Nagoya, the Japanese luggage handlers stood in single file to grab the bags! It was pretty amusing. Also amusing were the anime characters that accompanied written instructions. Here at my sisters I unpacked all my granola bars (etc) and took a shower. They have a funny Japanese shower. Difficult to explain by words and I'm too lazy to add a photo. Use your imagination ... read more

I have to say that I have never been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras but I am taking a wild guess that the small town of Dajia, Taiwan on the Saturday night of Mazu's departure might have resembled close to that! Mazu is known in Taiwan as the popular goddess and guardian of the sea (to be exact the fishermen and sailors that surround Taichung). Mazu rests in a temple called Chenlan Temple in Dajia, and then once a year, she proceeds to make her way south down into the surrounding Taichung countys for 8 days, stopping by over 70 Temples, where people will pray to Mazu for goodluck. Since Rachel lives in Dajia, she had been hearing about this event since the day she stepped foot into her town--and not a lot of ... read more
