It's Sunday afternoon and I just got back not long ago from a quick trip to Taipei. Myself as well as 4 other friends decided to get away from school for the weekend, and what a weekend it was! We packed a lot into less than 48 hours. It all started Friday afternoon after classes. We left not long after classes ended. After getting to Taipei, we checked in at our hostel and headed over to Taipei 101. We got back pretty late from Taipei 101, so we went straight back to the hostel. On Saturday we slept in (until 8:30 for the girls, 10 am for the guys) and then made our way to Fort San Domingo. It was originally built during Dutch colonization and then taken over by the British. It isn't the original ... read more

This past week has been the hardest week (school wise) to date. I had multiple tests/quizzes everyday and Friday was the worst. However, I had a light at the end of the tunnel-Harry Potter. But more on that later. Last Sunday we went to this great little pizzeria in a section of town called-not surprisingly-Little Italy. Their pizza was as good, if not better, than some of the pizza I've had at home. On Tuesday we went to this Indian restaurant/bar. I was quite worried I wouldn't be able to eat anything(with my horrible dislike of anything mildly spicy) but the cook was very respectful of my wishes for 'very mild'. That was a pricey dinner (as was the pizza) but it was definitely worth it. On Friday afternoon, Tashi and his Taiwanese roommates took us ... read more

Today we went to Sun Moon Lake. We somehow acquired a private tour bus and drove there. We had enough people to completely fill the bus. It was a pretty comfortable bus...until the ride back. More on that later. We took a tour around Sun Moon Lake asian style. We drove to the first place (sun moon lake) and took pictures. Then we got back on the bus and drove for 20 minutes up tight, twisty mountain roads. Though not near any cliffs, it was still an...interesting ride. We arrived at our next destination, which happened to be a place to eat. We had reservations at this place called the Sun Moon Lake Youth Center, or something like that. After lunch, we backtracked and stopped at this temple-like place we had passed on the way ... read more

I have internet in my room now. I've spent a good amount of time uploading a lot of my pictures, but not onto this site. You can only upload photos one at a time on this site, and that was a no-go with 115 pictures. The link to my pictures is: http://lifewithmeghan.myphotoalbum.com/ Enjoy! The link is also in my profile, so don't worry about losing the address.... read more

Finally the end of my time in Taiwan has come. Thinking back to some of the rough parts of the year I never thought I could make it to this day. I am so happy and excited to be going home, but I am sad to leave this place I called home for the past year. There have been ups and downs and good and bad. I hope to block out the bad and only remember the good of the island known as Formosa. This place has offered me endless travel opportunities each weekend and there are new things to discover around every corner. There is no way you can know what Taiwan is until you have spent some significant time here, learning and discovering. When people first arrive most only spend time in the ... read more

On Saturday I went with my Taiwanese friend Natalie, 3 of her friends, and Graeme, Ryan, and Tashi (from Puget Sound) to Changhua. It's geographically not very far from Taichung, but with traffic, it's a 40 minute bus ride to the train station, then 1 1/2 hours on the train. Despite the traveling time and getting up really early (and making sure the guys were conscious in time) to catch a 7:20 am bus was totally worth it. We went to one stop on this old rail line. It's called the Jiji train station. I believe I read somewhere that it was destroyed in an earthquake a few years ago but was rebuilt for tourism. At Jiji, we went to a few different little places. Natalie and her friends had never been there, so they were ... read more

Most of you know that I'm in Taiwan for two months, but noteveryone knows that I'm here essentially to go to summer school. I'm going to summer school, in Taiwan. Every weekday I have classes from 8 am-12 noon. Four hours sounds intense, but it's not 4 solid hours of classes. The first class of the day is usually an hour long. Then we take a break between each class, which, as the breaks start growing longer throughout the morning, classes shorten a little. So we go to class but then get to chat or check email inbetween classes. They have a really nice little computer room here, which I take advantage of often. The teachers are all pretty cool. Three of them are sisters and share the last name, so we call them the equivelent ... read more

I've decided to write an entry on my observations of Taiwanese eating habits as of thus far. First and foremost-no one cooks their own food. Lots and lots of families seem to have their own little food shop/stand, yet everyone eats out for almost every meal. It's kind of annoying having to eat out for every meal or eat somewhat gross cafeteria food. Before coming to Taiwan, my mother read somewhere an observation someone made-It may look gross, but it will most certainly taste good. For the most part this seems to be true. I've tried to stick somewhat to foods I am familiar with, but if I have no Chinese speaking guide with me this is not usually possible. If a shopkeeper sees you (a foreigner) come into their shop by yourself, they often come ... read more

finally have internet now. I moved to a different room today too. The school wanted to consolidate all the kids staying for the summer. It was a day from Hell, in all honesty. I didn't have that much stuff, but my roommate, who is also staying for the summer and is moving to a different room, has TONS AND TONS of stuff. Not only that, but our building was as far back in the corner of the womans' area as you could go. There was no path without stairs, so using the carts they provided did little to help. However, after sweating 3 gallons of my body weight and moving to the wrong room, I am finally here. Thank goodness! This room is much bigger, and it appears as thought I will only have one roomate ... read more

Ok, I'm standing in the library lobby typing this. Air conditioning is a blessing which you cannot fully appreciate until you come to Taiwan. Seriously, you do not know the meaning of heat until you've been here. I just checked the weather for the first time-It says that its 84 degrees here, but feels like 94. I find this hard to believe as I feel sweat pouring off of me. The only comfort in this is that everyone here sweats, a lot. I can hear a thunder storm rolling in (Yes, they have thunderstorms! Yay!!) and I hope it will bring some relief as I can't see how it can get anymore humid-but it probably will get more humid. This UV index is 10 plus-everyone here (the girls anyway) carry around unbrellas to help get shade ... read more
