Over the weekend my town held a huge festival. It was in honor of Matzu, the goddess of the sea. Well my teachers filled me in on who Matzu was and what she did. She was born in China a long time ago and she did many great things while she was alive. They compare her to Mother Teresea. When she died she was turned into a goddess. There is a reason for the sea part but I dont remember. Anyways she is very famous and during this time of the year she leaves to go on an annual pilgramage to other Matzu temples around Taiwan. People carry her the entire way and many people walk or bike with her too. It is over a period of 8 days. She set out on Saturday night ... read more

I wrote this about 2 weeks ago and forgot to publish, sorry for the delay! So I have now been here for 8 months and I have exactly 3 months to go, or 91 days to be exact. I have read back over some of my earlier blogs and its so funny to read what I wrote back then. Some things have changed and some things have remained the same. I have definatly changed during this time. I have been somewhat isolated for the past 8 months with a computer as my main form of communication to know what is going on back home. But I am certainly going to be in for some culture shock when I return. During the past 8 months, I have struggled and succeeded, its been a rollercoaster ride of ... read more

We're at Taipei airport as this entry gets published... We arrived in Taichung, Taiwan's second city, early on the morning of March 28th. Jen and I had travelled from Malapascua Island in the Philippines via ferry, hell-bus, taxi, plane, luxury bus, and finally taxi to get to Jean Christophe's and Tinna's house. The journey started at 10:30 on Tuesday morning and delivered us to our hosts at 2:30am on Wednesday. It was pretty smooth sailing, all told. We had some good times in the Philippines. Really, we did. We had a very relaxing time of it at our last stop: five days on our very own sometimes-private beach. Seven thousand islands make up this archipelago, and most of them are difficult if not impossible to reach. Things are changing, as witnessed by the discrepancy between our ... read more

Its a MIRACLE!!!! My scooter has been recovered and thankfully unharmed. But only in my life could such a crazy story accompany it. So the police called me this morning to let me know that they had found my scooter. Well it wasnt that simple since he didnt speak much English and I dont speack much Chinese. Eventually we understand each other and I figure out I need to walk to the police station and to have a friend who speaks Chinese come with me. So I get to the police station and they ovbviously knew who I was since, who can forget me? They took me to see my scooter to make sure it was ok and nothing was missing. But seriously who would want a pink raincoat or a pink helmet? The scooter was ... read more

SO as my fabulous, never exciting life continues, I have yet another quip to add to the saga of my rediculous life. Today was not a great day, Im kinda annoyed with things at my school and what not and this is just me whining. But as I was looking to go to the freedom of my own home, I realized that something was amiss. Thats right I went out side where I park my scooter and lo and behold it was no where to be found. But as many of you know I am sometimes flaky and forget where I leave things. So I stand racking my brain here are some of the thoughts that went through my head: Is this really where I parked my scooter this morning? Am I sure I wasnt running ... read more

I have been super busy since I came back from Thailand. I was at my home only for a few days before heading down to Kao and Kenting. I went with Mare and her friend from the States. We hit the beach for a day then headed up to Taipei to check out some thing we hadnt seen yet and to show Mare's friend around. After all that I went back to school for only 2 days before heading back up to Sansia to reunite with all of the foreign teachers I came here with. We had 3 boring days of presentations but 3 very fun nights with the gang. We ate dinner and all hung out together all night. It was great to see everyone, since I had not seen some people since August. School ... read more

****This is meant to be funny.....not serious.**** For a while now I have wanted to address the issue of etiquette on all forms of transportation. This does not specifically apply to Taiwan but to a number of countries and places. There are a number of unspoken etiquette rules for taking transportation but APPARENTLY some people must have missed the memo, thus these are my suggestions for solving the problem and making traveling a little more pleasant for everyone involved. Rachel's Rules for Traveling on various types of transportation. 1. Do NOT scream, talk loudly, or laugh when taking any form of overnight transportation, there is a possibilty others may be sleeping and they do not want to hear you obnoxious voice. If this does happen you should fully expect someone to tell you to shut up ... read more

Finally I have made it to the last week of school. Im not quite sure how I survived 20 weeks of teaching. It is NOT one of the things I enjoy about Taiwan. For me, my brain checked out a few weeks ago and I wasnt sure I would sanly make it to my vacation. I have had many rough days when students told me I needed coffee or something cause I was in a bad mood. But teachers arent supposed to be nice every day. I have had a rought time making it thus far, I didnt even want to leave Hong Kong, but I am very excited for the 4 week vacation, to relax and recharge! If I didnt have this long I am not sure I could make it til July. So my ... read more

Well i think i have officially decided i am going to be coming home and staying in the states for at least next year. today my school asked me if i wanted to come back next year and i said i would tell them after winter vacation, but i think i have made my mind up that i am coming home. I started to apply for jobs online tonight, Arizona and Myrtle Beach! I really have no idea what i want to do next year, whether i should teach or find a job that will allow me to travel. I really think traveling is my niche. I love to research and learn everything about the places i will visit. I find myself obsessing over learning about new cultures and places. there are so many things to ... read more
