I finally got back overseas recently! Three weeks in South East Asia. A short conference in Singapore, then a free flight to Manila (courtesy of Singapore Airlines) then exploring more of Singapore and a week in Kuala Lumpur. Due to his lung condition, Ross was unable to come this time, and I was disinclined to write travel blogs. However, for anyone intrested, here is the final cut of my photos from Flickr: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzZaV6 Craig Smith.... read more

This list has changed rather dramatically from the last time I saw it. This one is from Travel Awaits (MSN) that is rather shocking, since Singapore, my personal favorite, is number eight!!! As times goes, the airlines change as well. I have a letter grade for my assessment of the airlines. Here is the list: Lufthansa I just flew them to Frankfurt, and on to Athens, Greece. They lost my luggage, and it was going to require a 24 hour wait to receive it, unless I paid for a cab to pick it up!!! The food is mediocre at best (purportedly on fine china), and Business Class seats were not very comfortable. Plus, there is a touch of that stereotypical German sternness in all of the flight attendants. It was an experience, and certainly not worth ... read more

The title refers to the fact that retracing a few former steps is this traveller's return visit to Singapore, 25 years on, and a place which failed to make the right kind of impact upon the first visit, simply because the plan of action had been nowhere near thorough enough to allow it to be considered anything of a former travel highlight. This time around, however, the circumstances were radically different, and the 4-night stay, kept mercifully short, was designed to prevent the prospect of going over budget from blighting this mini-episode. A budget-conscious hotel choice in the centre of the commendable Geylang district was strategic enough to be able to enjoy the fruits of the entire city state without being too far away from a return journey in the context of a day's urban trekking. ... read more

The first botanical garden was set up by Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore and a keen naturalist, in 1822 on Government Hill at Fort Canning, mainly to introduce into cultivation economic crops. It closed in 1829 and, in 1859, at the present Tanglin site a new garden was developed by an Agri-Horticultural Society, and later handed over to the government in 1874. The gardens cover an area of 82 hectares and today in just 45 minutes we were able to have an opportunity to have a quick peep inside the Rain Forest, we walked along Heliconia Walk, viewed the Shaw Foundation Pavilion & Lake, & Palm Valley before ending outside the Orchid Garden. It was just after midnight for me but so worth staying up late to join Alvin and the people of Singapore ... read more

Located by the Marina Bay Waterfront in the heart of Singapore, Gardens by the Bay is a sanctuary for nature lovers and budding horticulturalists alike. Comprising three distinct spaces over 101 hectares–Bay South Garden, Bay East Garden and Bay Central Garden–this oasis of lush greenery has won multiple accolades since it first opened in 2012. Three waterfront gardens that define Singapore as the world’s premier tropical garden city, Gardens by the Bay is a national and international exemple of sustainable practice. Manmade Supertrees within the gardens are aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable. The imposing, 25 to 50-metre-high structures contain approximately 160,000 plants, with 11 out of 18 Supertrees containing environmentally sustainable features, such as inbuilt tanks which lead directly into the cooling of the domes. Seven Supertrees have pho... read more

Singapore Eating at food stalls on Singapore's Esplanade On Singapore's Esplanade - along the waterfront - we ate at food stalls which served freshly prepared satay...chicken, lamb or beef skewered on sticks and cooked over an open flame. Very tasty and very cheap. We then took a cycle rickshaw to Chinatown. We also dined with Bob Chamberlain, Director of Sales for the Shangri-La - our luxury host hotel and flagship of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts - and had another dinner at the Raffles, built in 1887 and still a grand hotel. We were hosted from Bangkok by Singapore Airlines which served with fine crystal, china and silver...the best of any airline. Sonnie Lien, G.M. of the Mandarin Orchard Hotel, was disappointed that we did not stay with him. Singapore is a true multi-cultural island nation: Although ... read more

Delhi - Diwali is the celebration of light over darkness, good over evil, also known as the Festival of Lights. During this tour we were welcomed into the home of Komal and her family. Even though the Hindu culture has many deities, traditionally only 2 Gods dominate the festival of Diwali, The Goddess of wealth and prosperity – Lakshmi and the elephant-headed God Ganesha. We joined Komal, her mum, dad and brother as they carried out their worship ritual. It is an age-old norm to clean homes before Diwali. The believe is that the Goddess Lakshmi only steps inside if your home is clean. This doesn’t just mean dusting the house, de-cluttering things, painting your house, and re-decoration too. Komal had created a Rangoli that looked so beautiful when the oil lamps were placed within it. ... read more

Your first reaction is that both are quite bad, or perhaps even tolerable, given the circumstances. I can probably count on one hand my decent airline meals, and most of those were on Singapore Airlines. My best hospital meals were at UC Berkeley. I contracted pneumonia as a sophomore there and was also hospitalized with a mysterious and unknown virus while I was in grad school. And I must tell you, the food was well above average, perhaps even pretty good. Why? I found out the UC Berkeley's Cowell Memorial Hospital does not have a cafeteria or its own food services. All the food came from across the parking lot, the famous Faculty Club. Once I had an appetite, meal selection became great fun. The menu for the next meal would arrive, and I could select ... read more

Saturday, 4th September 2021 Opted for the cutesy single loft room at Hotel Yan to spend my weekend. I once joined a weekend walking tour around the neighborhood thanks to the folks at the now defunct Mahota Market (the owner of Prime Supermarket). The weather for the weekend was lovely with clear blue skies which created an ideal setting for picture-taking opportunities. I walked a lot and tasted a lot along the way from the Hainanese Curry Rice @ The Hainan Story to the delicious Durian Mousse @ Tian Wang. At the end of the weekend, I learnt more things about the neighborhood than I would have thought otherwise.... read more
