I like horse racing and I like Singapore, so going out to the Singapore Turf Club on New Year’s for the Prosperity Stakes sounds like a good time. Kranji Racetrack is out on the northern edge of the island of Singapore, but you can get there on the MRT for just a couple of dollars. There are forests and lush green lawns out there; a very different vibe from the downtown core. And once you get there, you can pay for entrance to the track with your MRT transit card. I’d been to Kranji for the Prosperity Stakes about five years ago, and I remembered it as a fun time. I paid my admission to the track with my E-Z Link MRT card, and just inside the gate a nice lady was giving out packets of ... read more

Blog # 3: A Singapore postscript. January 4, 2020 Hello folks. I hope 2020 is being kind to you so far (and that you are not fire affected). For the last leg of our trip, we traveled from Phnom Penh across to Singapore on Jetstar. (Our experience on Jetstar Asia was just fine, compared to the woes I’ve had with Jetstar in Australia.) Like most other travelers, we love Singapore. It is warm, safe and clean, it boasts fantastic food and has heaps of things to do. Furthermore, the city state is shaking off its sterile, puritanical image. (It was once described by writer William Gibson as "Disneyland with the death penalty".) Nowadays, there are thumping bars and nightclubs that stay open later than that nanny city, Sydney. Clarke Quay last Friday night, for example, was ... read more

One of the (many) things I love about Singapore is the interesting architecture of the modern buildings and the careful conservation of historic buildings. And some of the historic buildings have remarkable stories attached to them. Most people, if they are at all familiar with Orchard Road, think of it as one long concourse of conspicuous consummation. It is all that, and then some. Huge malls connect underground to other huge malls that connect to other huge malls via skybridges. But along the way, there are a few spots where you can still see what things looked like in Singapore’s past. I went out this morning looking for one of these conserved buildings that I had read about, 14 Orchard Road, which had been the home of Malayan Motors. But before I got there though, I ... read more

Happy New Year’s Eve! We all got MMR shots and new passports. It's time for a 17-hr flight with a 9-month-old! This will be Y’s first international trip. I researched about baby jetlag and long-haul flights. I guess the bottom line is to bring plenty of food and surprise toys. The rest will really just be up to Y’s mood. In hindsight, I didn’t feel the 17 hours. Perhaps because I was hit with a mystery body ache ~6hrs into the flight. I think it was a reaction to the MMR shot but who knows. I had Y in the carrier when I was feeling my joint go slowly but surely. It peaked with nausea and I was a useless dead weight for the next 5-6 hours. Everything was a blur. I was SO glad it ... read more

Saturday, 21st December 2019 It was the final weekend before Christmas for our staycation at Village Hotel Changi. It preluded with a colonial-style brunch at the atmospheric Coastal Settlement where it was meant as a birthday treat for our December baby, KW. Good people, good brunch and good company, it was a good dining experience to remember and worth checking out again in future. Checking-in to our Club Room at Village Hotel was a familiar affair for me having stayed no less than 5 times over the past couple of years. I loved its location at rustic Changi Coast with the beach and the coastal boardwalk within striking distance. Day and night, there were also plenty of food options at the nearby Changi Village. Upon checking-in, we headed to the Club Lounge to grab some afternoon ... read more

The trip started in LA, where John and I stayed the night before our big flight. In the “biz” they call this a re-positioning flight. It allows you to find a good deal on a business class international flight from an airport that’s not near you. Fortunately, John has status with Marriott and a ton of points which we used for a free room, and it’s really easy to fly into and out of LAX. I was coming from work, so I got to LA around midnight – just enough time for a good night’s sleep and a quick workout in the morning. One of the other perks to John having status at Marriott is that we had free access to the very nice lounge for breakfast! I stocked up on some free Halloween candy in ... read more

After a solid night's sleep, I woke up fairly rested. I headed to the gym while John slept a little more. The gym was located on a very high floor in a corner, with floor to ceiling windows. Incredible views! It was well-equipped - like a regular gym. A ton of cardio machines, some weight machines, and free weights. The bathrooms attached to the gym had nice showers, a wet sauna, dry sauna, and a beautiful hot tub (no jets but looked awesome). John said the hot tub in the men's room has a window that looks out over the city. The one in the women's room had frosted glass. But still so relaxing! If we were there for 1 more day, I would have made full use of it. As it was, we were tight ... read more

78 to 81 of 81! So this is it then. The last blog for this 11.5 weeks jaunt across Russia, Mongolia and China. And from Singapore which, as a stop, wasn't on the original itinerary. The mid morning flight from Guangzhou, with Scoot, went fine. Although one might think of Singapore and 'China' as being roughly in the same locale, it was still a 4 hour flight from Guangzhou to Singapore. That duration would take you a fair way across Europe. As we walked through Changi Airport we did have a bit of a chuckle at the sight of a Chinese lady walking around with an opened instant noodle pot, like the hundreds we saw on our travels through China, and a pair of chopsticks, looking in vain for a hot water supply. They are at ... read more

I woke up a little bit late, well a little bit too early for my parents but I got up and went to look if my cousin Kaia was still in bed or getting ready for school, she was getting ready for her ''Big Girl School'' or as I would call it UWCSEA primary school!so i got up and she was having her breakfast already so I joined in with having breakie and got changed. We really did nothing so the photos are a recap on what we did before we left and JEWEL at the airport. Just after getting dropped of at the airport we watched the light show then realised we had to half rush to get to gate K13. After the 12hr flight to Germany we had a transfer flight strait to France ... read more
