Now in our daylong layover in Singapore. Arrived 3AM last night after a horrid plane trip. First leg with LA to Tokyo which was really bumpy and Rick had most of his meals ending up on his shirt. Rick calls it the roller coaster ride. Didn't sleep a wink. It was well over 20h with delays after our supposed 1hour layover in Tokyo. We had to deplane and then go back thru security and replane. Why? Beats me. Tammy lost her jacket during the reboarding in Tokyo and ran back off the plane to find it. The gate agents were very helpful and had one girl run around concourse with me to find it. Which we did! I was last one to reboard but people were still taking their seats so I had a good 3 ... read more

Six weeks, seven countries and twelve cities later, our tour to Russia the long way round has finally drawn to a close. It has been the most incredible experience and I am very glad to say there isn’t any one thing that stands out well beyond the others, there were so many magical moments of our trip: seeing snow and wild Elk in Golden Colorado and dining out with Jon and Julie who we both had a fantastic time with; the neon extravaganza of both Las Vegas and Times Square in New York City; the climb to the observation deck of the Empire State Building; seeing Phantom of the Opera on Broadway; my first rail trip in England going out to Bristol and the Eurostar voyage to Belgium; pub crawls and luxury dining in Belgium; hiking ... read more

What a beautiful city. Gorgeous flowers & greenery everywhere - so well looked after. Everything is pink! They have such a beautiful sense of pride in their city and it shows. It actually looks like a 'Sims' game where there are little 'maintenance' workers everywhere! It's fantastic! We had doors opened to us and people bow to us (not that I’m very comfortable with that) and just treat us like we were royalty (I am surprisingly pretty comfortable with that!). We caught a public bus to Orchard Rd. (S$1), a very exclusive shopping precinct and it was full of colour and noise and people and cars and shops and orchids and .... and ... and... just so much to see & do. Taxi's everywhere. Crazy driver's - not one blinker! They just change lanes whenever they ... read more

Well it's been an amazing couple of days. From getting up at 4.30am Sunday to catch our plane from Adelaide, then a whole day transit in Perth to find that our 0015 flight to Singapore was delayed by 1hr15mins which meant that we missed our flight to Saigon Monday morning. Oh heavens! Not a great start to our trip. But....Jetstar came to the rescue and booked us on the next flight to Saigon the next day and in the meantime provided us with taxi's, 4 star hotel for the night, all meals and VIP treatment through immigration & customs. Unexpectedly in Singapore overnight but in good shape & happy to have a pit stop.... read more

The adventure began early in the morning on Thursday September 24th in Boston..we woke up at 5am, both of us working the day before, but we had such an excitement that it didn't really matter to either of us. I of course was a bit anxious, knowing that we would be leaving the house, the cat, my family for weeks....ahhhhhh. I just wanted to make sure everything was covered and of course I couldn't be more thankful for Al being so calming and reassuring that everything was going to be ok....he's my rock and my light thank god we found each other. The cab arrived as scheduled at 5:30 am and we settled in nicely at the Logan Express in Framingham. Our 2 backpacks, our "wedding bag" and our carry on oh and don't forget we ... read more

So I'm sorry for the recent failure at blogging. Recent events and situations have kept me pretty preoccupied in addition to the normal busyness of traveling. Unfortunately those same events are probably causing a lot of people to want to hear from me, so I'm going to try and give some reasoning here. In case you're reading this and are really confused, I've decided I won't be studying in China this fall, and will come back to ISU instead. I'm actually sitting in the Singapore airport right now, in transit, waiting for my next flight to leave in about 10 hours. In a fashion very typical to me, it was a pretty sudden decision. I brought it up one evening, and by the next morning I was booking flights and sending emails to 30 different offices ... read more

History unfolds itself at the Changi Chapel and Museum on Saturday morning. Delicated to the living memories of the many who suffered during the Second World War, this small scaled museum contained artefacts and haunting testimonies of the Japanese Occupation. 70 minutes from home and after 3 buses and 2 transfers brought me to the Museum grounds on the morning of 4th July 2009. Alighting from the same service 29 from Tampines Bus Interchange were a couple of caucasians with a common agenda. Sharing the same compound with the Changi Prison, the white-washed building was relatively barren and unimpressive from the outside. It also housed a replica of the Chapel that was commonly found in the POWs camps of Changi during the occupation. The Chapel provided a place where the prisoners could temporary seek solace from ... read more
