I just arrived in Singapore. It is very hot here. We are in an air-conditioned airport. We have not stepped outside yet. We are waiting for the free tour of Singapore so I have an hour to kill. We took Singapore Airlines here. The plane was very nice inside, but not very roomy for an 18 hour flight! They did have individual screens for each seat, and you can choose from a long list of movies, play some video games (there were like 50 to choose from), listen to music, watch news etc. So that really made the plane ride go by faster. Also, if you are curious about where you are while in the plane, they have a GPS tracker type option that tells you where you are, what elevation you are flying at, what ... read more

Blog entry has been backdated. It was kinda rushed for the preparation of the entire trip. Thanks to my last exam which ended on 1st, I started packing two nights before and rushing everywhere to change currency to HK dollars and RMBs. Armed with leftover maps of HK, Shenzhen and a well-worned Lonely Planet book titled 'Hong Kong & Macau' by Steve Fallon, circa 2002 freshly borrowed out from the library. I intended to travel *light*, which entailed packing some shirts, a few pants. Had an intention not to have any check-in luggage on board, heard budget airlines handle check-in baggage like shoppers in a large sale - throwing about luggages/suitcases. Well, it was about 2.30pm in the afternoon in sunny Singapore, and cleared Customs and smoothly proceeded to the waiting lounge where a gleaming, ... read more

Hey folks... I'm still on my travels... Just back from a well deserved break (heehee!) Spent the last 2 weeks in Bali with mum and dad. I'm now fully fed and watered and packed up with lots of new clothes :o) Ready to take on Australia and find a home and job for the next couple of months! I'm currently in transit tho... at Singapore airport where they have LOTS of free internet... I've actually spent so long here that this place is begining to feel like home! Adding up all the time that I spent here waiting for my flight to Bali a couple of weeks ago and since arriving from Bali at about midday today (satruday 26th November) I will have spent a total of about 18 hours mooching about the place waiting for ... read more

Have arrived in Singapore eventually. Flight had to make emergency stop in Darwin as someone was taken ill. This means I've missed my connecting flight and now don't get in to Heathrow until 7.10 tonight instead of 3.30. Home soon though!... read more

I went to Changi prison museum and chapel today before going to the airport. The tour that I had was very touching, thought-provoking and of course, saddening. I'd read a lot of Changi, such as The Diary of A Girl in Changi, and other books from Australian men held there. Awful stories of 10,000 Aussie guys in a prison area built for 1,000. I'm getting more and more of a rounded view on the war, now having been to Hiroshima twice, Okinawa, the Battle Box and Changi Prison here, Nanjing (Nanking), the Australian War Memorial and other small sites and memorials of significance, where you can learn something of it all. I've been to history class in German High Schools I went to and have spoken to various Japanese and Chinese people about the war while ... read more

I'm at Changi airport writing this. Leaving Singapore I thought it was a good time to go back and mention a few of the cool, funny and last things I've noticed and not written about yet. First of all, Dengue Fever There are big posters everywhere. Like at bus stops and inside train stations. They say "Stop it now Before it kills." "Get rid of stagnant water around your home or workplace." Buses I usually find catching buses in foreign places the most scary thing. I don't know why. Catching buses in Singapore isn't very scary. You can check the cost exactly, before you get in, on the poster at the bus stop. Plus you can find exactly where you want to go, including what the bus stops in front of or opposite. And the stops ... read more
